Filter by:Dental biofilm is a primary etiological factor for periodontal diseases.(1) The bacterial biofilm would induce recruitment of leucocytes, neutrophils, and T lymphocytes and the secretion of antibodies, lipopolysaccharides, and chemical inflammatory mediators such as cytokines and chemokines.(2) Thus, periodontal diseases can cause tissue destruction and results in deterioration of clinical parameters measures such as periodontal pockets depth, clinical attachment loss, bleeding on probing, bone destruction, and resulting ultimately in tooth loss.(3)
Periodontal disease is a chronic condition affecting the teeth and surrounding support structures, characterized by tooth loss and alveolar bone loss. Sanative therapy (ST) is the gold standard non-surgical treatment for periodontal disease and involves mechanically removing the subgingival bacteria from the periodontal pockets. Regular periodontal maintenance appointments are needed to maintain periodontal health after ST. Moreover, the periodontal health of individuals not requiring ST is also dependent on regular hygiene appointments. Due to Ontario's March 2020 COVID-19-related clinic closure for approximately 3 months along with a reduced numbers of appointments available due to guidelines of professional bodies and public health beyond this period of time, many appointments were considerably delayed or cancelled. The effects of this disruption to periodontal health in male and female patients who have undergone ST and continue with maintenance appointments or who attend for regular hygiene appointments have not yet been investigated.
This is a prospective cohort study that aims to describe the difference in terms of percentage of closed pockets (PPD <5 mm and no BOP) when performing the periodontal re-evaluation at 3-4, 6-8 and 12 months. Fifty-two, ≥18-year old, otherwise healthy, periodontitis patients will be recruited at Centro di Odontoiatria, Università di Parma.
This study compared the clinical outcomes of the non-incised papila surgical approach (NIPSA) alone and with grafting biomaterial.
Objective: To evaluate the adjunctive effect of hyaluronic acid (HA) gel in the treatment of residual periodontal pockets over a 12-month period. Materials and Methods: Periodontal patients enrolled in maintenance and presenting at least one periodontal pocket 5-9 mm of depth in the anterior area were recruited from six university-based centers. Each patient was randomly assigned to control treatment with professional mechanical plaque removal (PMPR) and local placebo application or test treatment with the adjunctive use of HA to PMPR. Clinical parameters [i.e. probing depth (PD), bleeding on probing (BoP), plaque score, recession (REC), and clinical attachment loss (CAL)] and microbiological samples for the investigation of the total bacterial count (TBC) and presence of specific bacterial strains (Porphyromonas gingivalis, Treponema denticola, Tannerella forsythia, Fusobacterium nucleatum) were taken at baseline and every 3 months, until study termination. PD was determined as the primary outcome variable.
The aim of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of daily supplementation with inulin before, during and after sanative therapy (ST), on clinical outcomes of periodontal disease. The study design will allow the investigators to conclude if supplementation with inulin can favourably modulate oral microbiota prior to ST and can result in better periodontal health after ST.
The purpose of this study is to compare the clinical and radiographic effectiveness of Leukocyte-Platelet Rich Fibrin (L-PRF) and L-PRF combined with dental pulp stem cell (DPSC) application to the extraction socket of mandibular third molars.
Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory disease of the tissues surrounding the teeth and is one of the leading causes of tooth loss. Sanative therapy (ST) is a non-surgical procedure that allows for removal of bacteria from the deep pockets that form around teeth and is the frontline treatment for periodontal disease. Post-ST, patients require ongoing maintenance appointments to maintain their oral health, though whether risk factors for periodontal disease remain a predictor of periodontal health post-ST has not been comprehensively investigated. Risk factors to be examined include physical activity, exercise, sedentary time, flavonoid intake, protein intake, BMI, sex, age, smoking status, and number of sites with periodontal probing depth (PPD) ≥ 4mm at baseline.
Investigators hypothesize that in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) the severity of periodontal disease is significantly higher compared to patients without OSA in every aspect, including PI, PD, CAL and BOP. The number of lost teeth is hypothesized to be also higher in patients with obstructive sleep apnea. Purpose: evaluation of periodontal status in patients with obstructive sleep apnea. An analytical cross-sectional study will be conducted at the Department of Therapeutic Dentistry of the Sechenov University, Moscow. Investigators are planning to recruit 100 patients: 1) patients with OSA confirmed by polysomnography -75 participants aged between 35 and 65; 2) patients without OSA -25 participants of a similar age. Patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome will be sub-divided into three sub-groups according to OSA severity: 2A group - patients with mild apnea severity; 2B group - patients with medium apnea severity; 2C group - patients with severe apnea. All participants will undergo a dental examination including the following parameters: plaque index (PI; Silness & Loe, 1964), bleeding on probing (BOP), and touch depth of the pocket (PD), the level of clinical attachment loss (CAL). Investigators will also evaluate the number of lost teeth.
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the impact of surgical flap design on the healing of intrabony defects treated by means periodontal regeneration. Forty patients were enrolled and allocated random in two groups. Patients of test group received a minimally invasive surgical flap , while patients of control group received a conventional access flap. In both group the intrabony were treated by means the same periodontal regeneration procedure (i.e application of enamel matrix derivative). Periodontal parameters were recoded at baseline and after 12-months observation time.
