Filter by:The purpose of this study is to explore if an intervention using Mindfulness Based Childbirth and Parenting education (MBCP) targeted to stressed pregnant women is effective in: 1) reducing prenatal stress, 2) preventing perinatal maternal mental ill-health, 3) preparing the mother for labor and 4) promoting positive infant-caregiver attachment.
Engaging in health-risk behaviors such as tobacco and alcohol use put youth at risk for health problems that may compromise their futures and are extremely costly to society. Positive parent-child communication, characterized by openness, satisfaction with the family, caring, and effective problem-solving, has been found to be protective against a youth's involvement in health-risk behaviors. To promote positive adult-youth communication, in earlier work we developed, tested, and found efficacious an intervention, Mission Possible: Parents and Kids Who Listen (MP). This study is designed to test the following hypotheses: (a) Adults and youth who participate in MP will demonstrate more positive communication when compared with adults who did not participate; (b) Youth who participate in MP will have a lower incidence of health-risk behavior when compared with youth who did not participate; and (c) Positive adult-youth communication will mediate childhood health-risk behavior in the presence of risk processes that predict participation. The experimental design is a 2-group (intervention and comparison) pre-test repeated measures design with six waves of data collection over three years and two booster sessions of the intervention. Elementary school and community centers in Madison and Chicago served as recruitment sites for parent-child dyads.
The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of intranasal administration of OT on behavior and discourse of insecure adolescents during a disagreement (stressful situation) with parents.
Background: Preoperative Anxiety is a negative factor in anesthetic and surgical experience. Among the strategies for reducing children's anxiety, non-pharmacological strategies are as important as the pharmacological ones, but their its validity is still controversial. Objectives: The aim of this study is to verify if the information provided to relatives as well as and smartphone application provided to children interferes in prevalence and level of child preoperative anxiety. Methods: Eighty four children, 4-8 years old, ASA I, II and III, undergoing elective surgical procedures and their relatives are randomly allocated into four groups: control group (CG) where the relative received conventional information about anesthesia; info group (IG), relative received an information leaflet about anesthesia; device group (DG), relative received only conventional verbal information and the child received smartphone application immediately before entering the operating room; device and info group (DIG) relative received a leaflet containing information and the child received smartphone application. Children's anxiety will be assessed using the modified Yale Preoperative Anxiety Scale (m-YPAS) on three occasions: at the ward (W), surgical theater in the waiting room (WR) and at the operating room (OR). Statistics analysis will employ by Kruskall-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests for prevalence and level of anxiety in the groups.
Evidence-based programs aimed at enhancing parenting skills are effective, and pediatricians identify many parents who could benefit from such programs. Low-income children have high rates of behavior problems and their family system and environmental exposures often lead to cumulative and daunting levels of risk for poor functional outcomes; their parents are highly likely to benefit from parenting supports. However, low-income families are the most likely to drop out of parenting interventions, meaning the families and children with the greatest need receive the least support. Fewer than 25% of low-income families recruited to parenting programs will participate in even one session, and only about half of these parents will participate in more than half of the sessions offered. The aims of this trial are: Aim 1: To test the hypothesis that the provision of motivational interviewing (MI), as compared to an attention control (AC) condition, will increase the engagement of low-income parents of preschoolers in an evidence-based parenting skills group (the Incredible Years Series (IYS)). For this study, the outcome of engagement is operationally defined as intention to attend IYS sessions, attendance, and satisfaction with the IYS program. Aim 2: To test the hypothesis that the effect of MI on engagement in IYS will be impacted by the following moderators: parenting self-efficacy, child behavior problems, and maternal depression. The investigators hypothesize that the effect of MI on engagement will be greater among parents with lower parenting self-efficacy and parents of children with more behavior problems, but less among parents with more maternal depressive symptoms. The investigators will use a stratified, randomized controlled trial (RCT) design to evaluate the impact of MI on parent engagement in a well-validated preventive parenting skills intervention, the Incredible Years Series (IYS).
This is a research study to evaluate the effectiveness of the Family Foundations program and to better understand how families cope with having a new baby. The research questions include: What is the effectiveness of the Family Foundations program? How do families cope with having a new baby?
The purpose of this study is to determine the efficacy of Family Foundations that is to be delivered concurrently with home visiting. Delivered prenatally and postnatally, Family Foundations is a coparenting prevention program for new mothers and fathers that is designed to optimize child outcomes by teaching parents how to work together in raising their child. Using a randomized clinical trial design, families will be assigned to receive Family Foundations + home visiting or home visiting alone. A comprehensive assessment is administered at baseline and then at post-intervention, and 9 and 18 months later. It is hypothesized that families receiving Family Foundations will improve in their resolving of conflict from pre-intervention through follow-up. Additional anticipated outcomes are that those receiving the intervention will have more involved fathers, mothers and fathers will report less conflict, and children will have better emotional and behavioral outcomes relative to those who receive home visiting alone.
The investigators hypothesize that participants in the worksite parenting program intervention will show significantly better parent-child communication than will participants in the no-treatment (wait-list) control group.
