Filter by:This RCT investigates the impact of an oral supplement containing the probiotic Lactobacillus brevis CD2 on various salivary indicators of oral health. Participants will be randomly assigned to either the probiotic supplement group or a placebo group. The primary objective is to assess changes in salivary biomarkers, including salivary pH and buffer capacity; microbial composition using microbiome next-generation sequencing (NGS); and clinical oral inflammatory markers, such as full mouth bleeding score and full mouth plaque score, over a 4-week period. By comparing these indicators between the two groups, the study aims to determine the efficacy of Lactobacillus brevis CD2 in promoting oral health and potentially preventing oral diseases.
The goal of this cluster-randomised control trial is to assess the effectiveness of the MySmile app for improving oral health in secondary school children. The main questions it aims to answer are: 1. Will the MySmile app be more effective in improving secondary school children's dental plaque and gingival health over and above the existing school dental service (SDS)? 2. Will the MySmile app be more effective in improving secondary school children's oral health knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours over and above the existing SDS? 3. Is the MySmile app easy to use by secondary school children? 4. Is the MySmile app acceptable to use from the perspective of secondary school children? Participants in the intervention group will receive the SDS and MySmile app. The control group will receive SDS only. Therefore the researcher will compare between the intervention and control group in terms of dental plaque, gingival health, oral health knowledge, oral health attitudes and oral health behaviours.
There is little research on the effect of oral screening campaigns for improving oral health in older people. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the effect of a low-threshold contact with an oral health professional, including an oral health examination, on dental attendance of older people (65 years of age or older).
Maintaining good oral health is essential for general health and quality of life. Results of many anal-yses showed that stroke patients had poorer oral condition and worse periodontal status than control population. The aim of the study was to carry out a clinical observation concerning condition of oral health in stroke patients and healthy population. The oral health was assessed in patients with stroke and in (control group). The following elements were assessed: missing teeth, the presence of active caries foci, the presence of existing fillings and prosthetic restorations. To assess oral hygiene API (Approximal Plaque Index) was used. As part of periodontal examina-tion, the following were assessed: the presence of dental deposits, the depth of the existing periodontal pockets, tooth mobility according to Hall and Sulcus Bleeding Index during probing (SBI).
This clinical trial aims to assess the efficacy of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) in the early diagnosis of oral cancer. It focuses on Oral Potentially Malignant Disorders (OPMDs) as precursors to Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC). Despite the availability of oral screening, diagnostic delays persist, underscoring the importance of exploring non-invasive methodologies. The OCT technology provides cross-sectional analysis of biological tissues, enabling a detailed evaluation of ultrastructural oral mucosal features. The trial aims to compare OCT preliminary evaluation with traditional histology, considered the gold standard in oral lesion diagnosing. It seeks to create a database of pathological OCT data, facilitating the non invasive identification of carcinogenic processes. The goal is to develop a diagnostic algorithm based on OCT, enhancing its ability to detect characteristic patterns such as the keratinized layer, squamous epithelium, basement membrane, and lamina propria in oral tissues affected by OPMDs and OSCC. Furthermore, the trial aims to implement Artificial Intelligence (AI) in OCT image analysis. The use of machine learning algorithms could contribute to a faster and more accurate assessment of images, aiding in early diagnosis. The trial aims to standardize the comparison between in vivo OCT images and histological analysis, adopting a site-specific approach in biopsies to improve correspondence between data collected by both methods. In summary, the trial not only evaluates OCT as a diagnostic tool but also aims to integrate AI to develop a standardized approach that enhances the accuracy of oral cancer diagnosis, providing a significant contribution to clinical practice.
The present study was undertaken in order to describe the clinical profiles of food selective behavior in 35-65 years dental and non-dental populations.
Dental caries represents a challenge for Oral Health Services in several African Countries, like Uganda. Few studies have been reported the burden of oral health, its prevention and non-operative treatment among school children in African countries. Aim: To assess the prevalence and risk factors of dental caries and the effectiveness of strategies to prevent and treat dental caries using a non-operative approach among children in Gulu Municipality, Uganda. Methods: The proposal RCT is structured in three phases: 1. A descriptive cross-sectional survey to collect oral data among 610 school children selected using a multistage cluster sampling; 2. A randomized unblinded two-arm trial to assess the difference in the treatment/prevention of dental caries using non-operative means among school children in the Ugandian Gulu municipality; and 3. A comparison of oral health conditions between a group of children who will be given dental cleaning tools and followed up over time versus a control group. The oral health status of the participants will be assessed according to WHO and ICDAS guidelines. Stata 14.0. will be used for analysis; descriptive statistics will be carried out to analyze continuous and categorical variables and chi-square test as well as independent tests for bivariate analysis and modified poisson regression. In addition, the factors associated with dental caries will be determined by linear regression models using a statistical significance level of 5% (α = 0.05). Discussion: This trial will be the first trial conducted in Uganda assessing a school-based caries prevention programme using the WHO and ICDAS standardized international guidelines. The findings obtained will increase knowledge on oral health in Uganda school children and the effectiveness of community-based caries prevention programme in this population.
The aim of the study will be to evaluate the efficacy of a tissue autofluorescence detection system as an aid to clinical screening in identifying lesions of the oral mucosa. The screening process will be performed by 3 clinicians with a different level of experience. Sensitivity and specificity tests will be conducted.
As oral health has a major impact on general health and quality of life, good oral health are essential. The aspects of oral health that are most important for each individual vary, and quality of life is subjective, and influenced by the person´s experiences, perceptions, expectations and ability to adapt to circumstances. FDI World Dental federations definition of oral health is; "Oral health is multifaceted and includes the ability to speak, smile, smell, taste, touch, chew, swallow, and convey a range of emotions through facial expressions with confidence and without pain, discomfort, and disease of the craniofacial complex.
The program titled "Campus to Community: breaking the barrier in oral health education and dental care" is uniquely designed program to link University (Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences) to community (Sanghutar, Ramechhap). Dhulikhel Hospital, Kathmandu University Teaching Hospital has established a model dental clinic in the premises of Him Ganga Secondary School, Shangutar which is operated by council registered Dentist and dental hygienist. The objective of this study is to assess oral health condition of the children aged 6-15 years of the school followed by application of pit and fissure sealant (PFS) in non-carious permanent molar and Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) in carious permanent teeth. Data will be recorded according to the WHO Oral health assessment form for children, 2013 by a calibrated dentist from Dhulikhel Hospital and retention of PFS and efficacy of SDF application will be followed up after 6 months by the same investigators. The program is proposed with the expectation that proper oral hygiene prevention program combined with preventive procedures like pit and fissure sealant and SDF can reduce the burden of oral diseases in rural setup.
