Elucidating Growth Hormone Dynamics at Stages of Progressive Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

The purpose of this study is to investigate relationships between the body's growth hormone "axis" and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. The growth hormone "axis" includes the hormones growth hormone and insulin-like growth factor 1, and associated proteins. We hypothesize that there will be a relationship such that people with more advanced nonalcoholic fatty liver disease will have greater impairments in the growth hormone axis. There are no treatments associated with this research study.

Effects of Febuxostat for Lowering Uric Acid in NAFLD Patients With Gout

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common and harmful chronic liver disease. NAFLD accounts for 49.3% of the total number of chronic liver disease patients in China. It is important to effectively prevent and control NAFLD and its related diseases. Previous studies show the level of serum uric acid is significantly elevated in patients with NAFLD. Xanthine oxidase is a key enzyme in uric acid metabolism. It is a new therapeutic target for NAFLD. This study is aimed to further confirm that hyperuricemia is a new risk factor for NAFLD through a large sample prospective study. Furthermore, this study explore whether Xanthine oxidase (XO), a key enzyme in uric acid metabolism, plays an important role in regulating NAFLD.

Bariatric Embolization of Arteries for the Treatment of Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis

Obesity is an epidemic in the US. With progression of obesity, Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) has been a growing public health issue. Presently there is no cure for NASH.Prevention of progression of fibrosis in NASH is crucial, as they are at a high risk for cirrhosis and may need liver transplant. Recent studies have shown that blocking blood vessels to a particular portion of the stomach (bariatric or left gastric artery embolization) can temporarily decrease levels of the appetite inducing hormone ghrelin, and result in weight loss.The purpose of this study is to determine if Left gastric artery embolization (LGAE) in patients with obesity and NASH leads to clinically significant weight loss with improvement of NASH.

THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN FATTY LIVER (NAFLD) DISEASE AND PCOS

Since both pathologies (PCOS and NAFLD) involve disturbed carbohydrate economy, which revolve around insulin resistance, it is tempting to examine the specific "liver profile" of women with PCOD. Furthermore, it would be of great importance if lean women who suffer from PCOD would be revealed to shere cardiovascular risks with their more overweight peers. Patients - women who will be diagnosed with PCOD following their initial referal to our fertility clinic. Controls - normal ovulatory women who approached our fertility clinic due to either unexplained or male factor infertility. Workup - history for menstrual pattern; Clinical evaluation for features of hyperandrogenism; ultrasonographic documentation of ovarian morphology; follicular phase hormonal profile for validation of the diagnosis and for ruling out other pathologies which may cause anovulation. Liver profiling - The following blood tests will be used for the biochemical profiling: fasting glucose and insulin, CRP, HDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, AST, ALT, GGT, LDH, alkaline phosphatase, total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, ferritin, HBA1C and micro albumin ratio. FibroScan® will be used to measure liver stiffness.
