Filter by:NeuroN-QI aims to evaluate the effects of an intervention consisting of periods of: 1) parents/preterm infants skin-to-skin contact and auditory stimulation by the parents's voice and 2) calm without manipulation with olfactory stimulation with breast milk in the incubator/bed both combined with appropriate light and noise levels to promote neurodevelopment preterm infants.
Limited psychological support for parents of children with special needs in Hong Kong can profoundly impact the child rehabilitation process and the well-being of parent-child dyads. Leveraging previous evidence from our team's research, we have developed Pai.ACT, the first deep learning-based mental health advisory system for parents. Pai.ACT incorporates the counselling logic of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) through natural language processing, enabling parents to engage in human-like voice-to-text conversations and receive assessments and stepped-care mental health interventions, including guided self-help materials and real-time, individual-based counselling based on ACT. Following the research and development phases, we aim to kick off the utilisation of Pai.ACT by (1) pilot-testing its feasibility, acceptability, and potential efficacy in improving mental health outcomes for parents of children with special needs and (2) researching to determine the most optimal service model for parents by exploring their perceptions through focus group interviews. Pai.ACT offers accessible and comprehensive mental health services to all Chinese-speaking parents, addressing their psychological burden in caring for children with special needs. Pai.ACT could bring substantial and enduring societal benefits to Chinese-speaking families by integrating mental health support services for family caregivers with current child rehabilitation services and non-governmental organisations. Furthermore, this could contribute to reducing the public stigma attached to special needs children while increasing mental health awareness.
In this interventional, pilot clinical trial investigators will stimulate the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) in patients with Autism and ADHD. The goal of the study is to improve Cognition and Executive Functions associated with this brain region and, consequently, ameliorate the core symptoms of the disorders. Specifically, the primary purpose is to establish the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of TMS in pediatric patients with ASD and ADHD. Concurrently, the research aims to uncover the impact of TMS on particular biomarkers associated with the development of these disorders and validate the hypothesis suggesting that the BDNF gene polymorphism (Val66Met) could influence an individual's susceptibility to TMS. Participants will be randomized into the active group and placebo group, to guarantee a real assessment of the impact of neurostimulation on the cognitive, behavioral, and biochemical parameters. Participants will be asked to complete a neuropsychological evaluation and a biological sample collection before and after TMS treatment, and 1-month post-treatment completion.
The goal of this study is to compare the influence of visual and auditory white noise on performance in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The main questions it aims to answer are: - Can auditory white noise stimulation affect cognitive performance? - Can visual white pixel noise affect cognitive performance? Participants will complete two eye tracking tasks under different sensory noise stimulation. Researchers will compare the ADHD group with a group of typically developing children to see if the noise influences the groups differently and if it has the potential to affect the performance of the ADHD group, to reach the level of the control group.
Extreme prematurity is constantly increasing according to the World Health Organization. However, methods to train premature infants at risk of disability is sorely lacking. The goal of this project is to overcome this problem. In previous studies, the investigators discovered that promoting the crawling of typical newborns on a mini skateboard, the Crawliskate (a new tool that the investigators designed and patented EP2974624A1), is an excellent way to stimulate infants' motor and locomotor development. This method is a promising way to provide early interventions in infants at heightened risk for developmental delay, such as premature infants. The specific objective of this study is to determine if early training in crawling on this mini skateboard will accelerate motor (particularly locomotor) and/or neuropsychological development in very premature infants identified as high risk for developmental delay. Methodology: The investigators will study and follow two groups of very premature infants born between 24 and 26 weeks of gestational age or born between 26 and 32 with major brain lesions. These infants will be recruited before their hospital discharge at the NICU. After their discharge from the hospital, one group of infants will be trained at home by their parents under the supervision of physiotherapists to crawl on the Crawliskate every day for 2 months (Crawli group), and one group of infants will receive regular medical care (Control group). All infants will be tested for: 1)their crawling proficiency on the Crawliskate at term-equivalent age (just before training for the trained groups) and at 2 and 6 months corrected age (CA, i.e., age determined from the date on which they should have been born), 2) their motor proficiency between 2 and 12 months CA (2D and 3D recording of head control, sitting, crawling, stepping, walking) and 3) their neurodevelopmental, motor and neuropsychological development between 0 and 28 months CA: BSID III edition, ASQ-3, Amiel-Tison's Neurological Assessment, Prechtl Assessment of general movements. One more ASQ-3 questionnaire will be provided at five years. Expected results: The first research hypothesis is that premature infants trained daily to crawl (for two months after discharge from the NICU) will acquire proficient crawling patterns and develop earlier and more effective motor and neuropsychological development than premature infants who receive no training.
Children in primary school often suffer from lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), which may negatively impact their overall well-being. Co-occurring neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) can adversely affect children as well and can cause restrictions in their daily life, especially in their school-environment. The goal of this observational study is to identify the prevalence of LUTS in Flemish primary school children.The main questions it aims to answer are: - How prevalent are LUTS in regular primary education? - Is there a relation with well-being in school environment? - Is there an influence of co-occuring NDDs? Children, parents and teachers will be asked to fill in questionnaires related to this research question.
Feasibility RCT to ask: Can the investigators coproduce, with parent collaborators, a new service, Infant Parent Support (IPS), to improve the mental health of children with a social worker? Can the investigators test the feasibility of an RCT of IPS compared with services as usual?
The proposed study aims to determine the feasibility of the procedures for a future full randomized controlled trial (RCT), which will test the efficacy of a parent-child yoga intervention in reducing attention deficits in children with congenital heart disease (CHD). Specific aims of this single-blind, two-arm, two-center feasibility trial are to evaluate recruitment rates and capacity, withdrawal and dropout rates, adherence to the intervention, acceptability of the randomization process by families, variation in delivery of the intervention between yoga instructors, and standard deviation of main outcomes of the future RCT in order to determine its appropriate sample size. This feasibility study will lead to the first ever RCT to test the efficacy of an intervention strategy for reducing attention deficits in children with CHD. Ultimately, the implementation of this parent-child yoga program will lead to better long-term academic and psychosocial functioning and quality of life for these children and their family.
Around 80% of children with neurodevelopmental disorders such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and autism are reported to have significant difficulties with sleep. This may be a problem with settling off to sleep, waking repeatedly in the night, or both. Often these children will be prescribed a medication called melatonin to help them sleep, but there is no strong evidence of its effectiveness in children, the long-term side effects are not known and prescriptions for this drug cost millions of pounds a year for the NHS. Many children continue to have persistent sleep problems despite taking melatonin. Sleep support programmes delivered by nurses and sleep practitioners are known to be effective and to give parents and young people long-term strategies for promoting sleep without the use of medication. However, sleep support services are not universally funded. In this feasibility study 76 children with ADHD, autism or other neurodevelopmental disorder who have been prescribed and have been regularly taking melatonin for at least a year but still have severe sleep difficulties will be recruited. The investigators will help to improve the child's sleep with a sleep practitioner support programme and, if possible, reduce the dose of melatonin or stop it completely if it is no longer needed. Using this design, it will be possible to test whether a programme delivered by sleep practitioners will significantly improve sleep for children using a non-medical approach and in turn improve the health and well-being of the child and family and reduce melatonin prescribing, thereby saving NHS resources and the potential for long-term side effects. The study design will be delivered by Sheffield Children's Hospital and supported by parent users, the Sleep Charity and Sheffield CCG. The results will be disseminated widely to local, regional and national groups as well as via social media.
This randomized control trial aims to investigate whether a novel intervention, the "Building Regulation in Dual Generations (BRIDGE)" program, improves mental wellness and parenting practices among mothers of 3 to 5-year-old children who have elevated symptoms of depression. The main two questions this study aims to answer are: - Does participation in the BRIDGE program reduce maternal depression symptoms? - Does participation in the BRIDGE program improve children's mental health? Researchers will compare the BRIDGE intervention to an established mental health intervention (i.e., Dialectical Behaviour Therapy skills group) and to a services-as-usual control group to see if participation in BRIDGE leads to greater improvements than either the general mental health treatment or community services as usual. Participants will: - Complete a set of questionnaires pre- and post-intervention, and at 6-month follow-up. - Complete a virtual assessment with their child at pre- and post-intervention. - Be randomized to BRIDGE, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy(DBT) skills group, or a services-as-usual control group. - Participate in the 16-week BRIDGE or DBT Skills only group, if randomized to either of these groups. If they are randomized to services-as-usual they will receive a list of community resources they can access. - Complete weekly symptom monitoring via questionnaires, if randomized to BRIDGE or DBT Skills - Wear a Fitbit device during pre- and post-intervention, as well as throughout the 16-week intervention period.
