Filter by:This project seeks to develop and test the acceptability, appropriateness and feasibility of uTECH, a novel social media "big data" machine learning intervention for HIV-negative substance-using sexual and gender minority people who have sex with men that aims to reduce HIV transmission risk by integrating biomedical and behavioral risk reduction strategies, including pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention and medication assisted treatment (MAT) for substance use harm reduction
The research hypothesis is that access to prevention and harm and risk reduction associated with the use of psychoactive substances in a sexual context is insufficient for MSM practicing chemsex. This would lead to a lack of awareness of the risks taken and insufficient or inadequate strategies to protect themselves. This qualitative study has a comprehensive objective. The aim is to identify the risks perceived by MSM practicing Chemsex and their coping strategies. The study is based on individual semi-directed interviews and focus group. The criteria for inclusion are: an age greater than or equal to 18 years, being a man having sex with men and having used psychoactive substances in a sexual context at least once in the past 12 months. Participants were recruited through a gay geo-social networking app on mobile phones on a voluntary basis. At the same tim+e, flyers presenting the study are also distributed to the "chemsex" consultations at the Montpellier University Hospital in France as well as to an association fighting against AIDS in Montpellier. Data are subjected to an inductive method analysis, bringing out by constant comparison conceptualizing categories illustrating the experience and making it possible to identify and understand the risks felt and the coping strategies.
This study will develop and test a novel, smartphone based gaming intervention to improve adherence to medication to prevent HIV (known as Pre-exposure Prophylaxis, PrEP) and to decrease HIV risk behaviors among men who have sex with men (MSM). In the intervention, participants will engage with an immersive app/game on their iPhone. While gaming, participants will gain information about their health, improve motivation for PrEP and medical appointment adherence, and practice healthy behaviors. If the intervention is found to be effective, it can be tested in a larger study and then disseminated to other people taking PrEP.
Four focus groups , each of 10-15 males, ages 20-50 years old, MSM will be conducted by a medical sociologist. Two groups will be HIV negative participants and two groups of HIV positive MSM. Every group will meet for two hours. The focus group will be recorded and the collected data will be processed further for evaluation and extraction of the relevant information. The volunteers will sign an inform consent prior to entrance to the study.
