The Influence of Time-Restricted Eating in Patients With Metabolic Syndrome

In a randomized controlled trial, the investigators intend to measure the health impact of TRE in patients with metabolic syndrome (with three or more of the following criteria: increased waist circumference, abnormal cholesterol levels, elevated blood pressure, or elevated blood sugar), who habitually eat for more than 14 hours every day. Patients will be randomly assigned to a control group of behavioral nutrition counseling (standard of care) or the intervention group of behavioral nutrition counseling with the addition of adopting a 8-10 hour eating window for 12 weeks (TRE).

An Intervention to Reduce Prolonged Sitting in Police Staff

The primary aim of this study is to assess the feasibility of an intervention to reduce and break up prolonged sitting time in full-time police staff. The secondary aims of this study are to assess preliminary effects on patterns of sedentary behaviour (number of breaks, number of prolonged sitting bouts, average duration of prolonged sitting bouts, and total prolonged sitting duration), additional measures of sedentary behaviour (total sitting time, standing, and stepping), cardiometabolic risk markers, physiological stress (cortisol levels), physical health (self-report and postural stability), psychological wellbeing and mood, work stress (self-reported), and work performance (job satisfaction and productivity).

Grape Polyphenols and Metabolic Syndrome

Fruits and vegetables are beneficial for patients with metabolic syndrome, a condition characterized by the coexistence of various risk factors (obesity, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, insulin resistance) that predispose to cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Diets such as the Mediterranean diet, rich in flavonoids and polyphenolic compounds can exert a high anti-inflammatory, antithrombotic and antiproliferative action. Several studies have shown that grape polyphenols exert a crucial protective action against the onset of cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, and cancer diseases. On the other hand, little information is available on the health effects deriving from the consumption of table grapes on cell membranes lipidomic profile. On this basis, the aim of this study is the evaluation of possible changes in lipidomic profile and plasma antioxidant activity induced by a diet enriched with table grape polyphenols.

CARFARE (CARDIOMETABOLIC RISK FACTORS REGISTRY) is a registry done in the context of a cardiovascular primary prevention program of the Cardiometabolic Unit Officia of the Cardiology Department of the Austral University Hospital. The structured and sequential evaluation include measurement of anthropometric parameters (body mass index, BMI), laboratory with metabolic profile, baseline electrocardiogram, blood pressure (BP) measurement, arterial stiffness, subclinical atherosclerosis screening in the carotid and ileo-femoral territories using echo-doppler, echocardiogram, and ergometry test.

Developing a Positive Psychology Intervention to Promote Health Behaviors in Metabolic Syndrome: RCT

Specific Aim #1 (Feasibility; primary aim): To assess the feasibility of the PP-MI group-based physical activity intervention and outcome assessments in patients with MetS. Hypothesis: The PP exercises and MI-based goal-setting sessions will be feasible: most (≥50%) of participants will complete 6/9 exercises/sessions. Furthermore, the investigators will be able to obtain objective physical activity measurement follow-up data from at least 80% of enrolled participants at the end of the intervention and 24 weeks later. Specific Aim #2 (Acceptability): To assess whether the intervention is acceptable to participants, as measured by ratings provided after each PP-MI session. Hypothesis: The intervention will be acceptable: participants will rate the PP-MI exercises with a mean score of at least 7 out of 10 on ease of completion and helpfulness. Specific Aim #3 (Outcomes): To assess whether this preliminary intervention appears to result in improvement of physical activity, related health behaviors (sedentary time, diet quality), psychological well-being (optimism, positive affect, anxiety, depression), and the exploratory outcomes of MetS-relevant physiological markers (e.g., blood pressure, weight, chart-reviewed lipids and HbA1C). Hypothesis a: The intervention will lead to improvements in physical activity, related health behaviors, optimism and positive affect, reductions in depression and anxiety at 9 weeks and 24 weeks compared to baseline (or the start of the intervention, for the WLC group). Hypothesis b: The hypothesis is that there will be improvements in the exploratory outcomes of the physiological markers, even if they do not reach significance.

The Impact of Dietary Habits and Nutrition Intervention on Metabolic Syndrome in Individuals With Schizophrenia

Metabolic syndrome is a term used to describe a complex clinical condition that includes abdominal obesity, increased level of serum triglycerides, elevated blood pressure, decreased level of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and high fasting glucose level. Metabolic syndrome represents one of the major risk factors for the development of cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes mellitus. According to the results of numerous previously conducted studies, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome among the individuals with schizophrenia is higher than in the general population. The reasons for the higher prevalence of metabolic syndrome among the individuals with schizophrenia are not yet fully clarified. Nevertheless, unhealthy dietary habits are considered to be one of the main factors that could have an impact on metabolic syndrome development. According to the results of published studies, individuals with schizophrenia have poorer dietary habits when compared to people without mental disorders. Although there are numerous previously published studies focused on the impact of nutritional interventions on metabolic syndrome in individuals with schizophrenia, there is still no consensus on what would be the most appropriate nutrition therapy for the treatment of metabolic syndrome in this specific population group. Furthermore, the vast majority of the published studies have been conducted on outpatients, with only a small number of them being carried out on hospitalized individuals with a diagnosis of schizophrenia. Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet is primarily intended to those individuals with elevated blood pressure, but according to some authors, it could have beneficial effects in the treatment of the metabolic syndrome as well. DASH diet represents a healthy way of eating with a special emphasis on low-fat dairy products, fruits, vegetables and whole grains, together with an overall reduction in sodium intake. Therefore, the present study aims to determine the impact of dietary habits and nutrition intervention on metabolic syndrome parameters in hospitalized individuals with the diagnosis of schizophrenia. The investigators hypothesize that the intervention will result in the improvement in metabolic syndrome parameters, the amelioration in dietary habits, and the reduction in body weight.
