Exercise Effects on Adipose Tissue Structure and Function

Participants will be randomized into one of two different experimental groups: 1) Exercise group and 2) No exercise (control group). Subject participation in the study will involve a series of metabolic tests before and after participants undergo a 10% weight loss program (with or without exercise training depending on group randomization). After completing this weight loss portion of the study, participants will then be required to adhere to a high calorie diet program to regain half of the weight the participant lost - followed by the same series of metabolic tests.

Clinical Study on Wuling Powder in Treating Metabolic Syndrome of Spleen Deficiency and Dampness

In this study, a randomized, partially double-blind, controlled, multi-center clinical research method was used. A total of 4 groups were designed, namely, single decoction group, co-decoction group, powder group and simulation group. The four groups of patients all received basic health education, diet control and increased exercise guidance. All the patients in the group have taken western medicine according to their own conditions and followed the doctor's instructions for hypoglycemic, blood pressure, and lipid-lowering treatments. After joining the group, they continue to take the medicine at the original dose, and the patients are advised not to change the medicine during the observation period. Take 12 weeks as a course of treatment, and set the observation period to 12 weeks. Follow up every 4 weeks.

COVID-19 pandemic has made a tremendous impact on Indonesian economic and health care system especially with the double burden of diseases facing by Indonesia as a developing country. The prevalence of non-communicable diseases such as obesity, type diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases is increasing. These diseases along with older age have been known as an established risk factors for higher mortality and severe clinical disease entity in COVID-19 infection. Although, there is still some part of patients with these co-morbidities that only present with mild symptoms when infected with SARS-CoV-2, even for some without any symptoms. Thus, it would be very interesting to evaluate how are these role of aging and cardiometabolic parameters in the clinical disease course of COVID-19 infection, and how are the relationship with the immune system.

Dedicated Breast CT for Quantitative Breast Density Measurements in Mexican-origin Women in Southern Arizona

The overall objective of this clinical study is to determine the feasibility of breast CT for breast density assessment and association of CT-derived density measures with metabolic syndrome in overweight/obese Mexican-origin women in Southern Arizona. These evaluations will help support follow-up clinical research utilizing breast density acquired by breast CT as a surrogate endpoint biomarker to evaluate breast cancer preventive strategies. The long-term goal of these research efforts is to develop safe and effective preventive strategies to reduce obesity-associated breast cancer burden in our catchment area.

Low-Calorie Diet in People With Prediabetes/Metabolic Syndrome

Significant weight reduction, achieved by low-calorie diet (LCD), will mobilise ectopic fat (visceral and particularly liver fat), improving insulin sensitivity and other metabolic syndrome components, with secondary beneficial effects on cardiac structure and function. This CALIBRATE study (metabolic, multi-organ and effects of low-calorie diet in younger obese patients with pre-diabetes) will compare the effects of a safe and effective 12-month weight management intervention, initially using a low-calorie, liquid replacement diet for 12 weeks, anticipating at least 10% reduction in body weight. The investigators will examine how much the weight loss improves the metabolic abnormalities that precede type 2 diabetes (T2D), and in reversing the pre-clinical/subtle clinical abnormalities of the liver and heart that precede liver and cardiovascular disease (CVD). This study will compare the effects of a safe and effective 12-month weight management intervention, initially using a low-calorie, liquid replacement diet for 12 weeks, followed by a weight maintenance phase. The investigators will examine how much the weight loss improves the metabolic and neuropathic abnormalities that precede and accompany type 2 diabetes (T2D), and in reversing the pre-clinical/subtle clinical abnormalities of the liver and heart that precede liver and cardiovascular disease. In an additional optional sub-study, the investigators will additionally assess how the weight loss impacts upon appetite regulation within the brain with functional MRI (fMRI).

The Effect of Mastiha Oil in Metabolic Syndrome

Mastiha Oil is a 100% natural product of the Mediterranean, extracted from the resin of Mastiha. Over 90 compounds have been identified in Mastiha oil, with monoterpenes exhibiting favorable effects in regulating mechanisms of oxidative stress and inflammation. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of Mastiha oil in adults with Metabolic Syndrome. 90 participants will be allocated to two groups, (45 in intervention group and 45 in control group). Mastiha oil will be provided in the form of soft gel capsules to the intervention group, whereas the control group will not consume the capsules. Both groups will receive standard nutritional counselling. The intervention will last 3 months. The effects of the intervention will be evaluated via clinical and laboratory markers.

This study will also investigate the impact of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) on participants lifestyles and access to lifestyle programs and supports.
