Filter by:The body shape of obese women varies between having the majority of fat either above the waist ("apple" shape) or below the waist ("pear" shape). The study will investigate what restricts: apple"-shaped women from being "pear"-shaped at the cellular level. Since "pear" shaped women tend to have better health, this study will open the door to future research in regulating body shape and thus improving health.
Osteoarthritis patients undergoing primary hip and knee replacement are followed-up and changes in their glucose metabolism and other metabolic parameters (obesity, cholesterol levels) are examined. Persistent postoperative pain is examined as secondary outcome.
The metabolic syndrome is increasingly being recognized as a major threat to good health - especially cardiovascular health - and its frequency appears to be increasing in relation to the current epidemic of obesity. The objective of this study is to determine whether a program of enhanced lifestyle intervention can, compared to standard care, reduce the frequency and severity of the metabolic syndrome as assessed by clinical, metabolic, inflammatory and vascular outcome measures. EC will consist of a 17-session structured, lifestyle intervention plan, directed at achieving weight reduction and increasing physical activity change through education, behavior modification and stress management, and conducted in groups. It will comprise a 3-month Core Curriculum of 8 sessions, followed by a Maintenance phase with 9 monthly sessions delivered by lifestyle counselors, experienced in breaking through barriers in working with socioeconomically disadvantaged members of minority groups. All participants will have baseline, 6-monthly and 1-year assessments. This project, Project 2, entitled Community Health Approaches to Reducing Risk in the Metabolic Syndrome (CHARMS), seeks to study psychosocial and behavioral (lifestyle) variables that may contribute to the progression or amelioration of atherosclerotic processes underlying the pathogenesis of coronary heart disease (CHD).
The recent dramatic increase in obesity has been linked to a reduction of dietary fibre intake. We hypothesized that supplementing the diet of overweight and obesity adults with pulse fibre will improve their metabolic status, chiefly defined as greater weight loss. Other metabolic health improvements may include improved glucose control and reduced inflammatory markers.
This study aims at investigating the impact of colonic fermentation of intrinsic indigestible carbohydrates in cereal whole kernels after three days consumption, on metabolic variables and cognition. The study is performed in healthy, normal to slightly over-weight test subjects.

Gastric cancer is still one of the most common malignance in Korea. Because of the popularity of regular check ups, early detection of gastric cancer has increased, consequently, the survival of the patients also has increased. In this reason, the interest of outcomes after gastrectomy for gastric cancer move survival only to quality of life of these patients. Although the definition of metabolic syndrome is various, but it is normally accepted as a state that insulin resistance or glucose intolerance combined with hypertension or hyperlipidemia or obesity. Metabolic syndrome is a worldwide health problem, and the treatment is modification of life style, weight loss and medication. However, in most of the patients metabolic syndrome is considered not curable disease. Recent studies have shown that some bariatric surgery offers not only control the overweight but also metabolic syndrome. The exact mechanism is still unknown but decreased gastric volume and intestinal bypass itself seemed to play an important role to improve metabolic syndrome over just decreased weight. For treating gastric cancer, gastrectomy is essential and the extent of gastrectomy is varied subtotal and total gastrectomy according to the location of tumor. Also, reconstruction type is varied gastroduodenostomy and Roux-en-Y gastrojejunostomy after subtotal gastrectomy, esophagojejunostomy after total gastrectomy. This kind of operation for gastric cancer lead decreased gastric volume and/or intestinal bypass, which means this operation could lead similar effect of bariatric surgery. Already, there have been several retrospective reports that metabolic syndrome or diabetes was improved after gastrectomy for gastric cancer but no prospective study about this subject yet in Korea. The purpose of this study is that evaluating the degree of improvement of metabolic syndrome after gastrectomy for gastric cancer, and analyze the differences between the type of operation.
Metabolic syndrome is a serious health condition that affects about 35 percent of adults and places them at higher risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke and diseases related to fatty buildups in artery walls. The underlying causes of metabolic syndrome are obesity, being overweight, physical inactivity and genetic factors. In recent decades, the prevalence has increased dramatically in the United States. Lifestyle interventions including dietary modification, physical activity and weight loss form the basis of treatment for these patients. However, research has shown that even when people are able to incorporate these changes, they often revert back to their usual lifestyle resulting in weight gain and continued risk for diabetes and heart disease. Resveratrol, a natural plant derived compound found in grapes, peanuts and red wine, has been found to reverse some of the features of the metabolic syndrome (insulin resistance, high triglycerides, high blood pressure) in rodents. These improvements occurred without weight loss, and were proven to be a direct result of resveratrol ingestion. Other studies reveal improvement in cardiovascular health, tumor suppression, and longevity. However, there are few studies investigating these beneficial effects in humans. Investigators propose to prove that resveratrol, administered to subjects with the metabolic syndrome, under controlled conditions of weight stability, common diet, and strict compliance with the study drug, will improve the symptoms of the metabolic syndrome, thereby decreasing the chance of developing diabetes or heart disease.
The objective of the proposed study is to design and evaluate a touch screen computer based multi-factorial intervention to educate individuals at risk of Metabolic syndrome in diverse Indian settings including urban, rural and slum in the State of Bhubaneshwar. The study objective is to improve metabolic syndrome related knowledge, attitude and practices among individuals using the proposed interactive, bilingual computer based educational program.
There is some evidence that dietary supplementation with fish oil has health benefits, especially in respect of some of the known risk factors for cardiovascular (heart) disease such as cardiac arrhythmia. However, supplies of fish oil are limited, and it is desirable to validate alternative sustainable sources of the important omega−3 fatty acid components. It has been suggested that oil from krill, which are small marine crustaceans, may be as effective or possibly more beneficial than fish oil, and may provide a more effective and beneficial supplement. Dietary management of cardiovascular health parameters (such as blood lipids)is becoming more and more important as the rising trends in obesity nationally and worldwide are leading to escalating incidence of diabetes and heart disease. The investigators propose to use some specific novel lipid measurements of cardiovascular risk to test this possibility in a group of men who, although generally healthy, show some risk factors in terms of their weight and metabolic profile.This pilot study will provide preliminary data to show whether krill oil has similar or different effects from fish oil on the cardiovascular health of overweight but otherwise healthy men, and in particular will provide detailed information on alterations in novel lipid markers of cardiovascular disease, which may be a better diagnostic tool than classical lipid measurements (e.g. serum cholesterol). The investigators have been developing and validating new techniques to measure emerging lipid markers of cardiovascular risk accurately and will continue to develop and investigate these techniques during the course of this project. The investigators hypothesise that krill oil will be more efficacious in reducing markers of risk relating to cardiovascular disease.
