Filter by:Phase 1 of this study involves determining how consumption of dairy fat fractions rich in milk fat globule membrane influences postprandial inflammation in participants with metabolic syndrome or obesity during a high dietary fat challenge in a six-hour period.
Phase 2 of this study involves determining how consumption of cheese compared with a non-dairy cheese substitute influences inflammation over a six hour period.
This study is conducted to investigate if vitamin E status in healthy individuals and individuals with metabolic syndrome can be improved by dairy fat. The investigators hypothesize that full-fat dairy will substantially increase the bioavailability of alpha-tocopherol, a form of vitamin E. The results of this study will contribute to the application of dairy fat as a simple and effective strategy for improving vitamin E status, which is partly due to poor vitamin E intake. By completing this study, the investigators anticipate developing new dietary recommendations to achieve adequate vitamin E status through the regular consumption of dairy fat paired with foods containing vitamin E.
Little is known regarding the association of individual components of the metabolic syndrome (MBS) and prothrombotic, inflammatory and preclinical cardiac structural and functional markers in women with this syndrome. Less is known about adequate treatment as the pathological mechanism of this syndrome is not well understood. The purpose of this study is two fold; 1. To determine basic differences in biochemical and cardiovascular structural markers in women with and those without MBS and their association with the individual components of MBS. 2. To determine the impact of atorvastatin to lower the risk factors of Metabolic Syndrome. Atorvastatin is one of the most effective drugs approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of high cholesterol. It belongs to a class of drugs called statins and its role in primary prevention is still unclear. Thus this population seems to be an ideal group that may benefit from this intervention.
It has been reported in various epidemiological studies that patients with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis, with or without associated psoriatic arthritis, have an increased frequency of cardiovascular risk factors, such as hypertension, obesity, type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM, and metabolic syndrome (MetS). The presence of endothelial dysfunction in early stages, especially in moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis forms, could explain the higher prevalence of cardiovascular disease and mortality observed in this population. Existing evidence showing improvement in psoriasis after correcting some factors, such as obesity or hypercholesterolemia, and the reduction of certain surrogate markers of cardiovascular risk with different modalities of psoriasis treatment suggest a biological interaction between the two diseases beyond mere epidemiological association. Recently published results support this hypothesis and suggest that the link between psoriasis and cardiovascular disease could be the existence of an inflammatory state in different organs, including skin, joints, adipose and hepatic tissue, and vascular endothelium (16). Patients with MetS have an increased risk of developing T2DM and cardiovascular disease. This syndrome is characterized by the association of an adipose tissue inflammatory state and diminished sensitivity to insulin. In recent years, a new mechanism participating in the development of MetS has been added: the Wnt signaling pathway. Polymorphisms in genes of the Wnt signaling pathway have been associated with metabolic abnormalities that predispose to cardiovascular disease, the development of moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis, with or without associated psoriatic arthritis, and response to treatment with anti-TNF-alpha. This study aims to describe the cardiovascular risk factors of a Spanish population of patients with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis, with or without associated psoriatic arthritis,treated with anti-TNF under routine clinical practice conditions. Possible differences in efficacy relative to the presence or absence of criteria of metabolic syndrome will be analyzed. Similarly, we will explore the role of markers of inflammatory activity and genetic polymorphisms in the Wnt pathway in predicting response to treatment during the first year.
Since uncontrolled observational studies first linked fructose to the epidemic of obesity almost a decade ago, it has become a focus of intense concern regarding its role in the obesity epidemic and increasing burden of cardiometabolic disease. Despite the uncertainties in the evidence, international health organizations have cautioned against moderate to high intakes fructose-containing sugars, especially those from sugar sweetened beverages (SSBs). To improve the evidence on which nutrition recommendations are based, the investigators propose to study of the role of fructose-containing sugars in the development of overweight/obesity, diabetes, hypertension, gout, and cardiovascular disease, by undertaking a series of systematic syntheses of the available prospective cohort studies. Prospective cohort studies have the advantage of relating "real world" intakes of sugars to clinically meaningful disease endpoints over long durations of follow-up. The findings generated by this proposed knowledge synthesis will help improve the health of consumers through informing recommendations for the general public, as well as those at risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

This technique has the strength of allowing all of the available data to be pooled together and differences to be explored in groups of different study participants (healthy humans of different sex, weight, and age and in those with diseases which predispose to disturbances in metabolism, such as diabetes) with dietary fructose in different forms, doses, and with differing durations of exposure. The findings generated by this proposed knowledge synthesis will help improve the health of consumers through informing recommendations for the general public, as well as those at risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Dietary pulses (beans, peas, chickpeas, and lentils), more commonly known as "legumes", are generally recognized as healthy components of the diet. Canada's Food Guide encourages consumptions of meat alternatives, such as beans "more often"; and the dietary guidelines for Americans both recommend consumption of 3 cups of legumes per week. However, there remains insufficient information on the usefulness of these foods in protecting heart health. To improve evidence-based guidance for dietary pulse recommendations, the investigators propose to conduct a systematic review of the effect of dietary pulse consumption on after-meal blood sugar levels, appetite, and food intake regulation to help explain their mechanism for improving longterm blood sugar and body weight control. The systematic review process allows the combining of the results from many small studies in order to arrive at a pooled estimate, similar to a weighted average, of the true effect. The investigators will be able to explore whether eating pulses has different effects between men and women, in different age groups and background disease states, and whether or not the effect of pulses depends on the dose and background diet. The findings of this proposed knowledge synthesis will help improve the health of Canadians through informing recommendations for the general public, as well as those at risk of heart disease and diabetes.

The investigators will be able to explore whether eating pulses has different effects between men and women, in different age groups, in people with high or normal sugar or blood fat levels, and whether or not the effect of pulses depends on how much/often they are eaten. The findings of this proposed knowledge synthesis will help improve the health of Canadians through informing recommendations for the general public, as well as those at risk of heart disease and diabetes.
Strong and consistent evidence have shown that overweight, including obesity, is an important risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in adults. Several studies have found an association between overweight in childhood and increased risk of morbidity and mortality later in life. The prevalence of overweight in children and adolescents has increased in recent years, and consequently it is important to identify effective approaches in the prevention and treatment of overweight in young individuals. Approaches such as resident weight loss camps have shown promising results. A residential camp setting provides an opportunity to increase and control exposure to, for instance, particular foodstuffs, beverages and physical activity opportunities. However, well-designed studies with sufficient participants are still needed on the reversal of overweight in childhood with increased focus on documenting predictors of behavior changes associated with decreases in overweight. This study is carried through as a randomized controlled trial which investigates the effect of participating in a 6 week health promoting resident for overweight fifth grade children camp followed by 46 weeks of family support. The study hypothesis is that participating in a 6 week resident camp and a following period of 46 weeks of child and family support will induce a reduction in body mass index (BMI). In addition it is expected that the intensity and duration intervention program is sufficient to cause changes in physiological parameters related to a reduced risk of lifestyle diseases.
