Filter by:Psychological issues are common among university students and affect mental wellbeing. The Caring Universities (CU) project, involving nine Dutch universities, aims to enhance students' mental health through an annual online questionnaire and a platform offering guided eHealth interventions. One intervention, LifeHack, utilizes cognitive behavioral therapy-based modules to improve mental wellbeing by enhancing resilience and life skills. The effects of LifeHack with pre-post measurements (total n = 216 at post-test) found found that LifeHack led to improvements in mental wellbeing, but dropout rates were influenced by lack of motivation and module relevance. A personalized version of LifeHack is being developed to address these issues and will be evaluated in an RCT to assess its effectiveness in improving mental wellbeing and related outcomes among university students.
The goal of this clinical trial is to evaluate the effectiveness of an 8-week online yoga intervention in improving the well-being and productivity of desk-based workers. The main questions it aims to answer are: - How effective is an 8-week online yoga intervention in improving the well-being (mental and physical) and productivity (work engagement and job performance) of the yoga group compared with passive controls? - Are there any differences in well-being and work-related measures between the yoga and control groups? Participants in the yoga group will practice yoga three days a week for 8 weeks and will be compared with a wait-listed control group, which will continue with the usual routine for 8 weeks. Researchers will evaluate the impact of yoga on the well-being and productivity of desk-based workers.
The mental hygiene challenge is a Royal Ottawa Health Care Group led initiative to engage the staff, clients and community members to attend to their mental well-being by way of practicing mental hygiene activities for 10 min on a daily basis, throughout the month of March. Participants are encouraged to choose one or many of the practices recommended and do them for about 10 minutes a day. Participants are encouraged to make it their own, in that they can combine the practice or tailor them in a way that suits them best. When signing up for the challenge, participants receive free access to a toolkit with brief outlines and instructional videos on various mental hygiene practices. We also encourage participants to divide the 10 minutes in whatever way best works for them, such as 10 minutes all at once, 5 minutes twice, or even 2 minutes five times. This study aims to expand on the work that was done in 2022 and 2023, when the World Health Organization - 5 Wellbeing Index (WHO-5) and the Warwick Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale (WEMWBS) were collected from participants to ascertain the impact of mental hygiene, by way of including a control group.
The investigators are conducting a randomised-controlled trial comparing high ventilation breathwork with retention (HVBR) to a breathwork placebo (paced breathing at 15breaths/min with brief retentions). The metric of 15b/min aligns with guidance from the British Journal of Nursing, Royal College of Physicians and Johns Hopkins Medicine which state that the average, healthy rate should range from: 12-20, 12-18 and 12-16b/min, respectively. The main questions the study attempts to address are: Does HVBR lead to improved state and trait mental health and wellbeing in a general population adult sample? The study will be conducted entirely online through the research platform Prolific, so participant data will be anonymous. The investigators will collect self-reports of mental health and wellbeing before and after the three-week breathwork period, in addition to a follow-up three weeks later. Pre-post intervention and follow-up questionnaires will be completed online via the survey platform Qualtrics which will be linked to Prolific. Data on self-reported adherence to, and credibility/expectancy of, the breathwork will also be collected, along with participants' experiences to gauge the safety and tolerability of the breathwork protocol.
Many young people are experiencing stress-related mental health problems, with some recent studies suggesting this number is increasing. Especially now, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a significant increase in depression and anxiety in adolescents. An important way to help address this challenge is not so much to focus on trying to repair what makes young people vulnerable but to focus on building resilience. Resilience refers to the ability to successfully deal with stressful experiences. Recent research shows that being able to vividly remember and imagine positive events can buffer the negative consequences of stress, and makes a convincing case that training adolescents in recalling and anticipating positive events would promote resilience and thereby improve their mental wellbeing. And this is exactly what the current project sets out to do for the very first time. Adolescents will receive a playful group-training in school to make them better at recalling and anticipating positive events, which is expected to help them to bounce back more swiftly from challenging or otherwise stressful life events. The investigators predict that youngsters who follow our Positive Event Training will experience more positive emotions, will show improved resilience and report better mental wellbeing. The investigators will also develop a free online training protocol for teachers so that schools can provide this resilience program on their own, without the need of external professional trainers.
This study aims to understand how vitamin D (VD) affects human health. Typically, prisoners are low on vitamin D, as it is difficult to receive through diet, and is mostly obtained via exposure to the sun. The investigators predict that VD supplements could help improve overall mental well-being, as well as improve bone health. The investigators aim to recruit two groups of participants from a United Kingdom (UK) Prison, all of whom will participate via an informed consent process. The first group of prisoners will have chosen to take VD supplements, the second group will have chosen not to take VD supplements. At the start of the study, prisoners will have their bone density and blood VD levels tested. The investigators will also ask participants to complete a series of questionnaires to understand the state of mental well-being at the start of the study. Participants will be asked to complete a food diary to track dietary intake over the following week. Additionally, the investigators are interested in identifying what proportion of participants have a specific genetic makeup relating to their ability to metabolise VD, and participants will be asked to provide a saliva sample to test this. Every month following the start of the study, participants will be asked to complete the same questionnaires and food diary again. On the 3rd month, the investigators will again test the participants' bone density and blood levels of VD, to see whether supplementation has improved participant VD status. This study will run for a minimum of 3 months, up to a maximum of 6.
The aim of Wakey! is to increase access to wellbeing support to lower socio-economic groups who have traditionally been excluded from the design and evaluation of digital mental health interventions. This feasibility study is designed to explore engagement, initial efficacy and experience of using Wakey! in the underserved populations in the United Kingdom. This will be used to further adapt and refine the intervention, so it is appealing and effective in the target populations.
