Filter by:The project is a randomized controlled trial taking place in the North Zealand hospital in the city Hilleroed, Denmark. The aim is to investigate the potential beneficial effects of immunonutrition containing fish oil, arginine and RNA, on the acute immune response in patients with pneumonia.
Malnourished patients are at risk of many complications, including infections, pressure ulcers and readmissions. Little is known about their care pathway after hospital discharge. This study aims to determine care pathways of malnourished patients after hospital discharge and to determine what they need to better take care of their malnutrition.
TB-Speed SAM is a multicentric, prospective diagnostic cohort study conducted in three countries with high and very high TB incidence (Sierra Leone, Uganda, and Zambia). It aims at assessing several diagnostic tests that could result in the development of a score and algorithm for TB treatment decision in hospitalised children with severe acute malnutrition (SAM).
The project "Nutrition and Medication management in home-dwelling older adults" consist of two separate studies witch are described in the same study protocol. This is the first study in this Project. The second study is described separately; Identification: 2017/12883-2 Malnutrition is common in older adults. The causes are many and include adverse drug effects. Loss of appetite, nausea, or dry mouth are adverse drug effects, which may contribute to malnutrition. Knowledge about possible relations between drug treatment and nutritional status is scarce. The objectives of the project is to describe nutritional status, drug treatment and the prevalence of potentially inappropriate medication in home-dwelling elderly receiving home care service in two Norwegian municipalities.
Due to longer life expectancy, age-related changes and problems become more significant. The aging process is associated with loss of function and reduced performance. Age-related physiological changes in the regulation of nutrition intake and in the gastro-intestinal tract lead to deterioration of the nutritional status. Deterioration of the health status and of nutritional intake is further associated with chronic malnutrition, impaired quality of life, increased morbidity, mortality and long-term care. In order to ensure optimal nutritional care of nursing home residents and therefore have a lasting positive affect on their quality of life, morbidity and mortality, it is necessary: - to collect data on the quality of nutritional care in nursing homes by means of a simple method that requires no specialization in data acquisition, - to acquire knowledge on the prevalence of risk factors of malnutrition in nursing home residents in general and on individual nursing units, also in conjunction with the outcome after six months, and to forward the same to the individual nursing units, - to allow comparison with other facilities (with similar profile) with the help of a benchmarking system, - to assess the effectiveness of introduced changes in terms of quality management and quality improvement.
Upper GI malignancies often lead to involuntary weight loss and nutritional deficits. Nutritional support, both pre- and postoperatively, may improve post-operative course and reduce length of hospital stay. This prospective randomized trial aims to investigate the above mentioned hypothesis and clarify any variants that may differ between the investigation and control group at a statistically significant level.
NutriPEPA2 is a randomized, single-blind, prospective, multicenter trial, in two parallel arms to confirm that the adsorbent PEPA membrane may decrease mortality related to inflammation and malnutrition encountered in HD or HDF-treated stage 5 renal failure compared to a non-adsorbent synthetic membrane.
The investigators hypothesize that school-based nutrition education will increase dietary diversity among the adolescent girls. The investigators propose a matched, pair-cluster randomized controlled trial to measure the efficacy of school-based nutrition education on dietary diversity of the adolescent girls in Bangladesh. This study will have two arms (one intervention and one control arm). After screening, based on exclusion criteria, the investigators will prepare two separate lists (one for urban and one for rural) of schools in Rangpur district. From each list, clusters (schools) will be paired based on monthly tuition fees provided by the students (as a proxy indicator of socio-economic status of the students) and infrastructure of the schools. The investigators will randomly select one pair from each list and within each pair one school will be assigned to intervention arm and another one will be assigned to control arm through randomization. Targeting an effect size of 20 percentage point reduction of inadequate dietary diversity, a minimum of 148 adolescent girls will be required for each arm. Eleven to fifteen years old adolescent girls studying in grade six, seven and eight will be recruited from each school. To ensure household level participation and support, caregivers will be invited to the school for a discussion at the beginning of the intervention. Nutritional education will be delivered using audio-visual techniques (audio-visual presentation) once in a week for each class, for 3 months. Individual (IDDS) and household dietary diversity scores (HDDS) will be used for measuring dietary diversity at individual and household level, respectively. IDDS and HDDS data will be collected at recruitment, at the end of education intervention and again after 3 months of the completion of intervention. Following national guidelines, weekly iron-folic acid (IFA) supplementation will be provided to both intervention and control arm for 3 months. For identifying the barriers to and facilitators of intake of diversified food, a qualitative research will be conducted after the intervention. Adolescent girls having improved and girls showing no improvement in individual dietary diversity score will be recruited purposively for the qualitative assessment.
Malnutrition and cachexia are common in patients with advanced pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) and have a significant influence on the tolerance and response to treatments. If timely identified, malnourished PDAC patients could be treated to increase their capacity to complete the planned treatments and therefore, possibly, improve their efficacy. The aim of the study is to assess the impact of nutritional status, pancreatic exocrine insufficiency (PEI), and other clinical factors on patient outcomes in patients with advanced PDAC. The nutritional status will be determined by means of Mini-Nutritional Assessment score and laboratory blood tests. PEI will be defined as the presence of typical symptoms and/or reduced fecal elastase. Analysis: chemotherapy dosing over the first 12 weeks of therapy (i.e. percent of chemotherapy received in the first 12 weeks, as defined above) PAC-MAIN will provide insights on the role of malnutrition and PEI in outcomes of PDAC.
