The main objective of this research is to study the cognitive and cerebral mechanisms of the integration of central and peripheral visual information during normal and pathological aging (ophthalmological patients with AMD and glaucoma) through fMRI studies. To assess the effect of normal aging, research will be conducted on a group of young participants with normal vision and a group of elderly participants with normal vision. Each participant will be assessed once during an MRI (during which the brain activity and behavioral performance will be measured). In order to evaluate the effect of pathological aging, research will be conducted on AMD patients, glaucomatous patients, and age-matched controls (normal vision), evaluated only once during an MRI examination.

Evaluation of the Protective Role of the L-DOPA Against Age Related Macular Degeneration in Parkinson's Patients

Age related macular degeneration (ARMD) is a major and irreversible cause of blindness among the elderly. The sub-retinal space, located between the retinal pigmentary epithelium (RPE) and the external segments of the retinal photoreceptors, plays a crucial role in this pathology. A recent epidemiologic study in the US, unpublished yet, has shown that patients treated with the L-DOPA, developed only later an ARMD when compared to the untreated patients. The L-Dopa is an endogenous ligand of the GPR43 receptor, located on the RPE's cell's apical pole. This receptor, via several intracellular mechanisms, regulates the cell's exosomal and endosomal pathways: it would appear that the L-DOPA, by stimulating this receptor, decreases significantly the RPE's exosome release. The contents of the exosomes is still uncertain, however in addition to their signalization role, it seems they transport pro-inflammatory components, possibly helping the cellular recruitment due to the mononuclear phagocytic systems, particularly toxic for the photoreceptors. The aim of this study is to validate the hypothesis stating that he L-DOPA would play a protective role against age related macular degeneration.

Long-Term Safety of Lampalizumab Intravitreal (ITV) Injections in Participants With Geographic Atrophy (GA) Secondary to Age-Related Macular Degeneration (OMASPECT)

This multicenter open-label extension study is designed to evaluate the safety and tolerability of lampalizumab intravitreal injections in participants with GA secondary to age-related macular degeneration (AMD) who completed 96 weeks of treatment in Studies GX29176 (NCT02247479) or GX29185 (NCT02247531). The extension will enroll participants from the parent studies who received investigational lampalizumab, as well as lampalizumab-naive participants exposed to sham comparator. All participants will receive open-label lampalizumab in the present study.

Multicenter Prospective Cohort of Informal Caregivers in Burgundy and Franche-Comté

Medical progress and modification of lifestyles have prolonged life expectancy, despite the development of chronic diseases. The support and care are often provided by a network of informal caregivers composed of family, friends, and neighbors. They became essential to help maintening the elderly persons to live at home. It has been demonstrated that the importance and the diversity of informal tasks may jeopardize their own physical, mental and social well-being. The aim of the Informal Carers of Elderly Cohort is to define, through a longitudinal study of their life course, the profiles of caregivers of patients with a diagnosis of one of the following diseases: cancer (breast, prostate, colon-rectum), neuro-degenerative diseases (Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's and similar diseases), neuro-vascular diseases (Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA)), Age-related Macular Degeneration(AMD) and heart disease (heart failure), aged ≥ 60 years old and living in Burgundy or Franche-Comte. By following the different phases of the caregiving relationship from the announcement of the diagnosis, it will be possible to assess the quality of life of caregivers and evaluate the implementation of a pragmatic social action to help informal caregivers through a randomized intervention trial nested in the cohort. Thanks to an analytical and longitudinal definition of the profiles of informal caregivers, this study could gather precise information on their life courses and their health trajectory by identifying the consequences associated with the concept of their role of aid in care. In addition, the randomized intervention trial will explore the efficacy, in terms of quality of life, and efficiency of a social action to support the caregivers. These data will allow to identify strategies that could be used to improve the existing sources of aid and to propose new approaches to help caregivers. This study will provide the opportunity to identify the most relevant means of support and to give an impulse for new healthcare policies.

The objective of this study is to image retinal vascular alterations in patients with retinal disease using the AngioVue OCT-A system and understand the information these images provide. The investigators will image study participants who have retinal diseases with the AngioVue unit (Optovue) and will collect relevant clinical data to understand the nature of the information contained in images obtained on AngioVue. This study being conducted under an abbreviated IDE. The investigators will analyze data using descriptive statistics. Risks related to light exposure will be managed by ensuring that the exposure to the AngioVue light source is well below maximum permissible limits for safe exposure.

A Study of Disease Progression in Participants With Geographic Atrophy Secondary to Age-Related Macular Degeneration

This study seeks to better characterize relationships between visual function and the progression (worsening) of geographic atrophy (GA) due to age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The study is also intended to generate new information on the relationship between genetics and GA progression. This is a global, prospective, multicenter, epidemiologic study enrolling participants with GA secondary to AMD. The study visits are scheduled to occur every 6 months. The anticipated duration of the study is up to 48 months. There is a planned interim analysis around the 2-year time window for the study.
