Protein Requirements in Male and Female Endurance Athletes

Protein is an essential macronutrient for post-exercise recovery through its ability to provide the amino acid building blocks that support increased rates of muscle and whole body protein synthesis. Despite the growing understanding of the importance of post-exercise protein in endurance athlete populations, the impact of sex and female menstrual cycle phase on protein metabolism is not fully understood. To date, no studies have examined protein requirements in female endurance trained athletes. The aim of the proposed study is to utilize the well-established IAAO method to determine protein requirements in endurance trained female and male athletes in a "real-world" and at-home setting.

Protein Requirements for Active Children

Nutritional requirements for dietary amino acids in children have traditionally been determined utilizing the nitrogen balance technique, which is prone to underestimating protein requirements. As a result, there is a need to re-evaluate recommendations in order to characterize how dietary amino acid needs may be modulated by physical activity in healthy, active children. The purpose of this study is to measure the protein requirement in children (boys and girls) using the IAAO technique in the presence of a variable intensity exercise stimulus. It is hypothesized that the present study will deem current amino acid requirements to be underestimates of appropriate amino acid requirements for this population.

Effect of Non-essential Amino Acids on Protein Requirements for Endurance Athletes

Protein requirements in individuals who participate in endurance-based exercise training have been suggested to be greater than the current recommended dietary allowance (RDA). The biological value of protein depends on its amino acid composition. Essential amino acids are believed to have main role on whole body protein metabolism. However, it remains to be determined what role non-essential amino acids (NEAA) may have in regulating protein metabolism and contributing to the increased protein requirements after endurance exercise. The indicator amino acid oxidation (IAAO) method has clarified the individual amino acid requirement in children, normal healthy adult and clinical populations. However, the IAAO method has never been utilized for assessing the effect of NEAA on protein requirements after endurance exercise. The objective of the current study is to investigate the importance of NEAA for endurance-trained male subjects.

The biological value of protein depends on the amino acid composition. As liebig's law of the minimum, the protein synthesis is limited due to the lack of single rate limiting amino acid. In this case, the first rate limiting amino acid determines protein intakes to maximize the protein synthesis. Adding a small amount of rate-limiting amino acid to the diet improves the biological value of its protein diet. The indicator amino acid oxidation (IAAO) method has clarified the individual amino acid requirement in children, normal healthy adult and clinical populations. however, the IAAO method has never been utilized for determining the first rate limiting amino acid. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to address of IAAO method to be applied for determining the rate-limiting amino acid in endurance athlete.
