Filter by:There are many health benefits associated with the consumption of omega-3 dietary fats. Omega-3 fats, specifically eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), can be found in marine food products such as fatty fish, in fortified products such as eggs and milk, or in dietary supplements such as fish oil. Despite numerous health benefits, it is well documented that most people in Western society are not meeting the recommended daily amounts of EPA and DHA omega-3 fats. The overall objective of this study is to examine whether providing young adults (18-25 years) with personal genetic information changes behavior with regards to omega-3 fat consumption. In order to achieve this objective, study participants will be divided into two groups: 1. Genetic and 2. Non-Genetic. The Genetic Group will be provided with their personalized information regarding a common gene variant in addition to general information regarding the health benefits of omega-3 fats, while the Non-Genetic Group will only receive the general information. Primary outcomes studied will include dietary habits and secondary outcomes include blood markers of cardiometabolic health.
Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of dental hygienist support on oral health and attitudes to oral healthcare in nursing homes for older people. Background: Studies in long-term care facilities have indicated that oral health is often unsatisfactory. It is important that nursing staff are able to assist dependent care recipients. Dental hygienist support has been suggested as valuable help. Material and methods: Two nursing homes were randomly selected for intervention and control. Interventions included weekly support from dental hygienists on oral hygiene procedures, prescriptions for individual oral hygiene procedures, and oral care organisational issues. The residents' oral health, measured by dental plaque levels, gingival bleeding and the Revised Oral Assessment Guide (ROAG), was evaluated before and after three months. Attitudes among the staff to oral healthcare were collected through a questionnaire.
Aim of the study is to find out if the live online course is effective with regard to health promotion. Older adults receive support to initiate a health behavior (i.e., to enhance physical activity or to improve food habits). Motivation, confidence and self-management strategies are optimized to make sure participants are able to integrate the physical activity or healthy diet into their daily life.
In this study, the investigators evaluate an intervention aiming to increase participation and communication of older adults during primary care consultations with their General Practitioner(GP). The investigators are particularly interested in a Photo novel tool with this aim. Photo novels are picture stories, which have the advantage of using a familiar narrative format, thereby possibly increasing comprehension, personal involvement and motivation and self-efficacy to perform the relevant behaviors by offering role models (story characters that are similar to older adults themselves). The patient perspective on doctor-patient communication is underrepresented in most research. This study aims to incorporate the patient perspective in different ways: in addressing their needs and barriers during focus group discussions, in collecting their communication strategies and solutions to these barriers in the role play exercise, in involving them in developing the photo novel, and in studying their responses to the photo novel in the evaluation study the investigators describe in this research proposal.
