Filter by:The study goal is to promote viral load suppression among women with serious mental illness (SMI) and HIV in Botswana, given that these women are especially vulnerable to psychiatric medication nonadherence and symptom exacerbation, which are made worse by stigma and threaten antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence. The investigators propose to test an intervention to reduce stigma due to the statuses of SMI and HIV, against an attention control condition, in the high-risk transition period after discharge from an initial psychiatric hospitalization. Specifically, the investigators are conducting a two-arm randomized controlled trial (RCT) with a 4-month follow-up to compare the effectiveness of 1) What Matters Most (WMM)-based intersectional stigma intervention delivered as clients transition from psychiatric hospitalization to outpatient care; and 2) an attention placebo control condition that follows a similar format to isolate the effects of the intervention. The investigators will also assess policymaker workshops where peer women with SMI and HIV co-lead the reporting of RCT findings via lived experience to policymakers to initiate structural change. Enabling women with SMI and HIV to resist stigma has the potential to improve their HIV outcomes and empower these women to elicit broader, structural-level change.
Research has shown that people living with HIV struggle to disclose their HIV status to others, (a process known as self-disclosure or onward disclosure) due to associated challenges, including fear of discrimination from others. However, there are a range of potentially positive outcomes associated with self-disclosure, such as increased medication adherence, improved wellbeing, and greater social support. Consequently, people living with HIV should be adequately supported, if they wish to disclose. This study intends to develop and assess a digital HIV disclosure intervention, based on an existing non-digital intervention, for Sub-Saharan African adults, living with HIV and residing in the U.K. Participants will be followed pre, during and post intervention, with various measures being collected throughout, including HIV disclosure behaviour, HIV disclosure intention, HIV disclosure motivation, general wellbeing and mood. Upon follow up, participants will also be asked to complete a questionnaire regarding their personal experiences of this digital intervention. It is hypothesised that this digital HIV self disclosure intervention may lead to increases in HIV disclosure intention, amongst other secondary variables. Statistical and visual analysis will allow outcomes of this intervention to be summarised and will hopefully lead to implications and suggestions for future digital HIV disclosure interventions, supporting those living with HIV to manage the self-disclosure process effectively.
Although global rates of HIV infection have decreased overall, rates among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Southeast Asia are increasing. A recent review of available global data and the molecular epidemiology of HIV among MSM in Southeast Asia suggests that targeted interventions for MSM populations are necessary to reduce HIV incidence in the region. For example, in Vietnam's urban centers, the HIV epidemic among MSM is growing rapidly, with an estimated prevalence of 17% in Ho Chi Minh City and an estimated incidence of 5.8% among young men who have sex with men in Hanoi. Behavioral epidemiology has also been well-described, with high rates of unprotected sex, multiple concurrent partners, untreated STIs, and poor engagement in the HIV care continuum, including low rates of HIV testing, all contributing to high levels of circulating virus among MSM risk networks.
The goal of this clinical trial is to evaluate the impact of using a whole food plant-based diet in the reduction of cardiovascular risk related to HIV in people who live with HIV infection. The main questions it aims to answer are: - Does a whole food plant-based diet, nonrestrictive in calories and low in fat, reduce the cardiovascular risk associated with HIV infection in people with HIV infection? - Does the whole food plant-based diet permit achievement goals in specific metabolic markers of cardiovascular risk (such as Cholesterol, C Reactive Protein)? Participants will follow a non-calorie restricted, low fat, whole food plant-based diet for 8 weeks Researchers will compare standard nutritional care to see if there is a difference in the main outcomes
The purpose of this study is to learn about how well a vaccine (Prevnar 13, PCV13) works in preventing disease in adults with HIV. The diseases studied are pneumonia. Mostly the ones caused by the bacteria - pneumococcus. This study also evaluates the type of pneumonia that is spread into the bloodstream. All participants in the study will be identified in health care databases. Adults with HIV will be identified by looking for a medical diagnosis that has confirmed HIV from the databases. Vaccination will be identified in the databases by looking for vaccine administration or for PCV13. Participants will be followed in the databases to see if they have one of the diseases mentioned above or not. The number of vaccinated participants with the diseases will be compared to the number participants without the vaccines but with the diseases. This will help to understand how well the vaccine worked.
The purpose of this study is to develop, conduct, and assess the feasibility of a) a pilot peer-driven intervention (PDI) to reduce HIV risk and increase the uptake of primary HIV prevention services (i.e. prison addiction treatment programs), and b) explore the PDI's usefulness from the perspective of both prisoners and prison staff to make recommendations for the PDI future improvement and adaptation.
The scope of this study is to engage Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (RWHAP) funded organizations in the South/East US to co-develop context-responsive programs to reduce structural racism and discrimination (SRD) against Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) living with HIV (PLH) and BIPOC healthcare workers. Six RWHAP clinics will be selected to participate and be assigned to one of three sequences (two clinics per cluster). All members will complete participate in interactive trainings to raise awareness of and reduce SRD, from the clinic policy level, to attitudes, to the clinic environment. All clinic members and select patients will complete self-administered surveys every 6 months over 18 months.
The objective of the proposed research is to conduct formative work to develop, pilot and refine a smartphone delivered intervention for violence affected people living with HIV utilizing a novel spatial-temporal methodology, geographical ecological momentary assessment (GEMA), to first identify the activity spaces and daily psychosocial experiences (mental health symptoms, substance use, self-efficacy, coping) impacting adherence and viral suppression, and apply them to intervention. Guided by an ecological perspective, the investigators will adapt Living in the Face of Trauma to a mobile platform with GEMA informed intervention targets. The resulting app shall be referred to as NOLA GEM. Our long-term goal is delivering accessible interventions informed by daily experiences that affect health for PLWH. The investigators will test feasibility, acceptability and preliminary efficacy of the GEMA-informed NOLA GEM app against GEMA alone on adherence and care, and secondary outcomes of mental health and substance use.
The goal of this clinical trail is to test the developed eMPrISe study in HIV-negative, adult, Latino men who have sex with men (MSM) who use non-injection substances. The main questions it aims to answer are: - Can participation in the developed eMPrISe study reduce methamphetamine ('meth') use risk? - Can participation in the developed eMPrISe study improve preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) cascade progression? Participants will participate in 12 weekly modules that: (1) build critical thinking skills, (2) identify and discuss the link between oppression and harmful behaviors, (3) take action, (4) voice and validate feelings and experiences, and (5) share knowledge and resources.
The aim of this study is the gain new insights into HIV latency before and after cure intervention studies through extensive blood and tissue sampling (lymph node and colon biopsies) from 30 individuals.
