Investigating Hearing Aid Frequency Response Curves 2

Internal research on the manufacturer's hearing aid products has idenitfied areas in which the investigators can improve the hearing aid frequency response curve. Based on the conclusions of the first study, we have identified areas that require further analysis and testing prior to implementing of the proposed frequency response curve into our products. This study aims to investigate the current freqeuncy response curve in the manufacturer's products to variations of these curves to determine if hearing aid users prefer the variations over the manufacturer's standard curve.

PRINCE22 System Complete Performance Study

The investigation proposes to compare a narrow reference beamformer to a novel beamformer approach, when the talker is not in front of the hearing aid user and in the presence of background noise. The beamformer effect will be determined in terms of speech intelligibility, listening effort and ability to multitask when the talkers are located on the side or in the back.

Optimizing Soft Speech Recognition in Children With Hearing Loss

Overhearing is important for vocabulary learning and speech and language development in young children. However, contemporary hearing aids are generally unable to provide adequate access to low-level auditory inputs from multiple talkers at a distance to capitalize on overhearing. A recent investigation by Jace Wolfe and colleagues showed that, even when aided, children with hearing loss had significantly poorer speech recognition at 40, 50 and 60 dBA compared to children with normal hearing. Furthermore, they showed that increasing hearing aid gain for very low-level inputs produced a statistically significant improvement in syllable-final plural recognition and a non-significant trend toward better monosyllabic word recognition at very low presentation levels. Additional research is needed to document low-level speech recognition ability of children with hearing loss as well as the potential benefit or detriment of increasing hearing aid gain for low-level inputs. A novel hearing aid technology known as Soft Speech Enhancer has been shown improve low-level speech perception in adults with hearing loss; however, the effect of Speech Enhancer on speech recognition in children is not yet known and will be evaluated.

There is evidence that the sensor function of the utricle in patients with bilateral labyrinthine dysfunction (bilateral vestibulopathy) may improve balance under the influence of high frequency basal stimulation of the cochlea. The aim of the study is to measure the possible co-stimulation of the utricle (which is determined by the SVV) by tonotopic (frequency-specific) cochlear stimulation and thus to objectify whether the stimulation of the auditory nerve in CI patients also leads to an unavoidable co-stimulation of the vestibular system.

An Actual Use, Open-label Study Assessing Usability of Remote Assist to Program Cochlear Implant Recipients

Clinical management of cochlear implant (CI) recipients involve programming, counselling, performance evaluation and habilitation. This requires the recipients to travel to the clinic for follow up appointments which can pose significant challenges for recipients, particularly those who live far away from the clinic. Remote Assist (RA) is a new solution that allows the clinician to make MAP and sound processor adjustments via the recipient's Nucleus Smart app (NSA) installed on their smart phone. With RA the clinician can also perform counselling using a video call directly via the NSA. As RA uses no specialized hardware and software that needs to be sent and retrieved back from the recipient, it has the potential to further improve the remote programming experience and convenience for both the recipient and the clinician.
