SEP and the Impact of Price on Food Selection in a Simulated Food Delivery App

The goal of this randomised controlled trial is to compare taxation with subsidies to encourage healthier food choices in the out-of-home food sector. Participants will be asked to make hypothetical food choices in an online simulation study of a delivery app. Participants will be randomised into four different intervention groups: 1. Price reduction (10%) on healthier foods 2. Price increase (10%) to less healthy foods 3. A combination of price reduction to healthier foods and price increase to less healthy foods 4. Existing price structure (i.e. control group) The investigators will further examine effectiveness of these fiscal policies on healthy eating by socioeconomic position to understand whether these policies are equitable.

Out-of-home Consumer Food Purchase Behaviour in the Presence and Absence of Value Pricing and Price Promotions

It is important to understand the role that price-based incentives in the out-of-home food sector play in food purchasing, and whether they lead to positive savings for the consumer (as they would likely anticipate when making purchases), or whether these incentives lead to increased spending and increased purchasing of unhealthy products. Additionally, it is important to consider whether the impacts of price-based incentives differ according to a range of demographic characteristics. For example, some evidence suggests that effects of removing a price-based incentive are greater in individuals with a higher BMI. Evidence also suggests there may also be differences in impact according to socioeconomic position (SEP) as individuals in lower SEP groups reportedly use price-based incentives more frequently. If lower SEP individuals are more affected by price-based incentives (i.e. they prompt ordering in excess and greater spend), then the banning of such strategies could help to reduce health inequalities, by nudging lower SEP consumers toward healthier dietary choices in the OOH food sector. To date, it is unclear what effect policies which remove specific types of price-based incentives would be likely to have on consumer behaviour. In particular, individual product price reductions (e.g. £ off this product), bulk buy price reductions (e.g., Save £ when bought together) and volume value pricing (e.g., the price increase from a small to large portion size not being directly proportional to volume increase). Therefore our primary objectives are: • To observe the effect of removing price-based incentives (individual product price reductions, bulk buy price reductions, volume value pricing) in the OOH food sector on: - Energy purchased per household - Money spent per household Secondary Objectives: • To explore whether any effects of removing price-based incentives differ based on participant characteristics (BMI, SEP, food choice motives)

Examining Engagement Predictors of Health and Fitness App Uptake and Subscription in the General Population

This will be a 24-week prospective study that will incorporate user base data of WayBetter Inc.'s app, "WayBetter," to examine user mHealth app engagement. The primary objective of this study is to examine predictors (i.e., socio-demographics, past health behaviours, psychological determinants, app engagement metrics) of (a) initial six-month subscription and b) subscription renewal rates at six months for the WayBetter app. The secondary objective is to characterize WayBetter app engagement over the first 24 weeks of app use. Participants will be asked to complete a survey that aims to collect the information regarding individual-level socio-demographics, previous health behaviours, and behavioural/personality traits. App engagement metrics will be collected from the WayBetter app.

A Study to Evaluate the Effect of SlimBiotics Probiotic Formula on Weight Management and Metabolic Health Outcomes

This study is to evaluate the efficacy of a probiotic supplement on weight management and metabolic health. This study will be conducted as a hybrid trial consisting of both in-person visits and virtual assessments. Two groups will be included: the intervention (SlimBiotics Probiotic) and placebo. The SlimBiotics probiotic formula is the first plant-based probiotic targeting weight management and metabolic health. Other competing probiotics are isolated from humans (feces) but the strains in SlimBiotics were isolated from a fermented plant (millet porridge cereal).
