This syndrome was reported in 11 patients (6 males and 5 females) out of 4000 patients with a history of chronic low back pain (CLBP) throughout 2 to 6 years in an outpatient clinic in Egypt from 2016 to 2022.

Risk for Reoperation After First MTP Joint Arthrodesis

We will screen all first metatarsophalangeal joint arthrodeses performed between 2010 and 2022 in Helsinki University Hospital. Information about demographics and additional diagnoses will be yielded from data pool of medical records. Additionally we review pre- and post-operative x-rays for first MTP joint angles and OR records for operative techniques. Our aim is to find associations between those known variables and risk for reoperation in two years after operation.

The clinical study involves the routine treatment of skeletally mature patients who have been diagnosed with hallux rigidus (stiffness of the first metatarso-phalangeal joint in the foot due to arthritis and degeneration of cartilage). It follows standard practice surgery to treat this condition. This type of degenerative arthritis affects the joint of the big toe (hallux) which is attached to the foot. Taking part in this research will involve collecting data of the surgery to remove damaged cartilage and fix the two bones together with screws and a plate (called the CoLink® PCR MTP Plate).

The study in question is a post market clinical follow up (PMCF) study to evaluate the safety and performance of bioabsorbable headless compression screw Inion CompressOn in selected fracture, osteotomy and arthrodeses operations of the foot and ankle. The study recruits 125 adult patients who meet the acceptance criteria. The follow-up time for each study patient is 4 years. The study is a single center single group study which is conducted in Tampere University Hospital (TAYS) in Finland. The main focus of the study in terms of performance is to evaluate the bone healing/ossification of operated areas. The main focus of the study in terms of safety is to evaluate the occurrence of adverse events and required revision surgeries that are or might be related to the study device.

Synthetic Cartilage Implant Versus Interposition Arthroplasty in Hallux Rigidus Treatment: A Randomized Clinical Trial

A minimum of 100 patients with grade III hallux rigidus will be randomized in two parallel groups for surgical care. The first group will be submitted to the insertion of a synthetic cartilage implant at the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint. The second group will receive a dermal interposition arthroplasty at the MTP. Both sides will undergo the same post-operative protocol. Pain, complications, and functional results will be evaluated in a minimal of two years of follow-up.

Managing Pain in Patients With MTP Arthritis

Hallux rigidus is a degenerative disease of the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint which affect 2.5% of people over the age of 50. As the arthritis progresses, patients pain levels increase and range of motion decreases. Non-operative management includes the use of NSAIDS, intra-articular injections, shoe modification, activity modifications, and physical therapy. Oral NSAID have been used extensively to reduce swelling and pain but have been found unsatisfactory in providing pain relief. Injections have been shown relieve pain in patients with grade 1 MTP arthritis. Shoe modifications and orthotics can modify the biomechanics of the MTP joint and thereby alleviate pain. Based on expert opinions, it seems the Morton extensions may alleviate pain but are also poorly tolerated by patients due to it's uncomfortable shape, coincidently leading to a low patient compliance rate. VKTRY insoles were initially designed to increase ground force leading to a harder push off for faster running or higher jumping. To enable energy return the insole needed to be extremely rigid and therefore consists out of a full-length Carbon-Fiber base. Unexpectedly the Carbon fiber base makes this a highly rigid construct which will likely benefit those patients with MTP arthritis as it will take away much movement of the MTP joint, without having an uncomfortable shape, i.e. patients can use this insole in their own shoes, possibly leading to a higher patient compliance and, simultaneously, to better outcome. Even though this insole is being widely used by athletes, no one has explored its role for treating patients with MTP joint arthritis. Therefore, the aim of this study is to compare the VKTRY insole to the current Morton extension insoles in a blinded randomized controlled trial
