Epithelial Mesenchymal Transition and Periodontitis

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease results is destruction of the attachment apparatus of the teeth and ultimately tooth loss. Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a process comprises of series of events that influence a polarized epithelial cell to undergo molecular/morphological changes leading to acquisition of mesenchymal cell phenotype. This process is responsible for suppressing epithelial-phenotype and it is known to be triggered by chronic exposure to inflammatory cytokines, Gram-negative bacteria, hypoxia, smoking, and hyperglycemia. Both periodontitis and EMT share common risk factors/promoters; however, the role of EMT in the pathogenesis of periodontitis is not fully elucidated yet. Potential induction of EMT within periodontal pockets may disrupt epithelial barrier thus facilitating invasion of pathogenic periodontal pathogens to deeper tissues resulting in further tissue breakdown and non-resolving periodontal lesion.

Lipid Kinetics of Patients With Pneumonia

Nonfermenting Gram-Negative Bacilli (NFGNB) are aerobic, non-motile, non-lactose fermenting, oxidase-negative, catalase-positive coccobacilli that pose a serious threat to critically ill patients. Primarily Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) and Acinetobacter baumannii (AB), are NFGNB which are potential multi-drug resistant (MDR) pathogens that are related to ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). In Nonfermenting Gram-Negative Bacilli (NFGNB) infections, which are potential multi-drug resistant (MDR) pathogens, pathogenesis is determined not only by bacterial virulence factors but more importantly by the interaction between bacteria and the host immune system. Thanks to their direct immunomodulatory properties, lipoproteins and lipids bind and neutralise toxic bacterial substances. During the acute phase response and inflammation, HDL presents significant structural and functional changes. This study was planned to evaluate the relationship between the changes of the serum lipid metabolism and other inflammation markers with the antimicrobial resistance status and the results in NFGNB VAP patients. Also, we aimed to investigate whether there is a difference in the clinical characteristics of the patients depending on the resistance profile of NFGNB.

Population Pharmacokinetic Study of Colistin in Patients Infected With Multiresistant Gram-negative Bacteria

Nosocomial infections have become a major health problem. They induced important use of antibiotics which is a preponderant factor for the development of bacterial resistance. The multi-resistance to antibiotics affects primarily Gram-negative bacteria. Some strains (as Acinetobacter or Pseudomonas) have become resistant to almost all antibiotics currently available, and the use of old molecules as Colistin may be the only alternative. However, there are few reliable data about Colistin and its PK characteristics. These data are essential to optimize its administration. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the pharmacokinetics of Colistin and its prodrug, colistimethate (CMS) after intravenous administration of Colistimethate alone or combined with inhaled Colistin in severely ill patients infected with multiresistant gram-negative bacteria
