Students With Involved Families and Teachers

PURPOSE: In the proposed project, the investigators seek to examine whether the SWIFT Program might be efficacious to improve students' prosocial skills and emotion and behavior regulation and improve home-school communication and the use of positive parenting practices for families. The investigators will also test whether the SWIFT program might be efficacious to improve students' longer-term school adjustment and parents' involvement in school. SETTING: Study activities will take place in ten school districts in Lane County, OR. The districts have approximately 10,000 middle school students (Grades 6-8), and approximately 60% of students are eligible for free and reduced price lunch. Some participating districts participated in the IES-funded Goal 2 study to develop the SWIFT Program. POPULATION: 320 students in Grades 6-8 who are receiving special education services for emotional or behavioral disorders, and transitioning or at risk of transitioning between school settings and placements will be recruited. Parents and content area teachers of all participating students will be recruited to complete assessment measures. It is expected that up to 15% of the children in the study will be of Latino ethnicity and approximately 60% will be European-American and 10-20% will be of other or multiple ethnicities. INTERVENTION: The SWIFT Program is a 9-12 month intervention that includes four components: (a) behavioral progress monitoring, (b) case management of the intervention elements and coordination with the school, (c) parent support to promote parent engagement/collaboration with the school and study routines in the home, and (d) behavioral skills coaching for students. SERVICES AS USUAL (SAU) CONTROL CONDITION: The SAU students and families will continue to receive any services that they were receiving prior to their entry into the study (as will the SWIFT students and families). These may include school-based interventions and supports and related services as required in the student's IEP.

Efficacy of a Web-Based Emotion Regulation Intervention for Patients With Congenital Heart Disease

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is associated with daily stressors and functional impairments that can cause negative emotions. Emotion regulation abilities may determine whether people with CHD develop psychopathology or adapt to the illness-related regulatory demands. This three-arm randomized clinical trial evaluates the efficacy of emotion regulation interventions in individuals with CHD. Patients with CHD over 18 years will be randomly assigned to a CHD-specific web-based emotion regulation intervention, a general web-based emotion regulation intervention, or a waitlist control group with delayed intervention access (8 weeks). The interventions are based on cognitive behavioral therapy, including everyday emotion regulation exercises and psychoeducation via video and audio files. Four and eight weeks after baseline, emotion regulation, well-being, depression, anxiety, perceived stress, life satisfaction, and illness identity will be assessed. Both interventions are expected to improve emotion regulation abilities, well-being, depressive symptoms, anxiety, perceived stress, life satisfaction, and illness identity four and eight weeks after baseline compared to the waitlist control group. The disease-specific intervention is hypothesized to be superior as it targets everyday emotional problems in CHD patients.

Maternal Choline Supplementation and Offspring Cognition in Adolescence

The goal of this 13-year follow up of a randomized control trial is to study the effect of maternal choline supplementation on offspring cognition in adolescence. The main question[s] it aims to answer are: Does a higher dose of maternal choline choline (930 mg/d day supplementation) lead to improved cognition in adolescence including hippocampal-dependent episodic memory and executive functioning when compared to lower dose supplementation (480 mg/d). In this follow-up of a clinical trial participants will complete online cognition testing and emotion testing.

Evaluating the Efficacy of a 60-day Emotion Regulation Journal

Participants randomized to the intervention group will receive a physical copy of the 60-day emotion regulation journal during the baseline meeting. Participants will also be introduced the purpose of the journal and its intended usage (i.e., daily journaling). Intervention participants will not be offered guidance or feedback on the journal after these initial instructions, in order to emulate an ad libitum usage. Control group participants will not receive any contact with the researchers outside of the planned questionnaires and to receive their journal at the two-month timepoint.

Effect of ASI on Sensory, Motor, Cognitive, Behavioral Skills and Social Participation in Children With ADHD

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a very common neurodevelopmental disorder in childhood characterized by short attention span, impulsivity and hyperactivity. It is also known that sensory integration problems are seen together with the basic symptoms of ADHD. Studies indicate that children with ADHD have difficulties in perceiving and processing sensory stimuli, and in relation to this, they have difficulty in producing appropriate sensory responses at school, at home and in social environments. However, it was observed that the interventions related to ADHD did not focus on the sensory-motor dimension enough, and focused more on cognitive or social skills. Although current research indicates the presence of sensory integration disorder in children with ADHD, there are no studies showing the effectiveness of sensory integration intervention. Our study was planned to examine the effect of Ayres Sensory Integration intervention on sensory-motor, cognitive, behavioral skills and social participation in children with ADHD. Materials and Methods: After the evaluation, 90 children with ADHD will be included in the study by dividing them into intervention (n=45) and control (n=45) groups by simple randomization method. Ayres Sensory Integration Therapy intervention will be applied to the intervention group for 10 weeks, 3 times a week, with a session duration of 1 hour, while the control group will continue the drug treatment and after a waiting period of 10 weeks, Ayres Sensory Integration Therapy will be applied after the second evaluation. Participants, Sensory Profile (SP), Sensory Integration and Praxis Test (SIPT), Emotion Regulation Checklist (ERC), Stroop Test TBAG Form (Stroop TBAG), Childhood Executive Functions Inventory (CHEXI), Participation and Environment Scale for Children and Adolescents (PEM-CY), Conners Teacher Rating Scale (CTRS), Conners Parent Rating Scale (CPRS), Bruininks-Oseretsky Motor Proficiency Test-2 (BOT-2) and Goal Achievement Scale (GAS) both before and before intervention. and post-group change as well as between-group differences will be evaluated.

Open Label Mightier Play in the Home

Mightier is a digital mental health tool that uses video game-based heart rate biofeedback to teach emotion regulation. The primary goal of this study is to replicate results from original clinical trials, demonstrating that playing Mightier at home improves common symptoms associated with emotional dysregulation. Participants will be caregivers of children who are using Mightier, a video-game based heart rate biofeedback intervention. Caregivers will be asked to complete a short survey about their child's emotions and behaviors prior to their child's first play and then complete that survey two more times, at 8 weeks and 12 weeks post baseline. The pre-post self report design will allow us to observe changes during Mightier use and relate those changes to overall engagement with the intervention

A Precision Medicine Approach to Target Engagement for Emotion Regulation

The proposed study is designed to first test whether teaching people personalized or standardized emotion regulation skills leads to greater decreases in daily negative emotion intensity. Second, using data from an initial sample, the investigators will prospectively assign an independent sample of participants to receive their predicted optimal or non-optimal skills to determine if it is feasible and efficacious to match participants to the most appropriate training condition. Results of these studies may identify the mechanisms by which emotion regulation interventions impact emotional functioning and allow for the development of personalized, evidence-based, and scalable emotion regulation interventions.

The Effect of Emotional Freedom Technique Applied Before Cesarean Section

Since all the follow-up and care of the pregnant during the prenatal period are carried out by the midwives, the care provided by the midwives to the women during the prenatal period plays a key role for the woman to have a comfortable and healthy pregnancy. Midwives should take psychological approaches in order to reduce the negative feelings of women before cesarean section. Considering all these, it is thought that Emotional Freedom Technique, which does not require any invasive intervention, is inexpensive and easy to apply, will contribute to women's feeling better by reducing pre-cesarean anxiety, surgical fear and traumatic birth perception.

Evaluation of Executive Function and Emotional Regulation in Children in Bangladesh

The study explores the impact of malnutrition at enrollment on executive function (EF) and emotional regulation (ER) in malnourished 1-year-old children and whether specially designed brain directed therapeutic feeds improve EF/ER outcomes at three years of age. The study will detect changes in EF and ER related to nutritional rehabilitation using specially designed ready to use therapeutic feeds (E-RUSF Nutriset) during the repletion phase and maintained for two years until age 3 with enhanced E-SQLNS (small quantity lipid based nutrient supplement) also modified to provide adequate brain directed micro and macronutrients. The investigators hypothesize that standard Bangladeshi designed B-RUSF and SQLNS (Nutriset) do not provide adequate nutrients to supply the brain during the rapid catch-up growth and subsequent early childhood growth phases of rehabilitation from Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM). The investigators predict that the children with moderately severe malnutrition treated with E-RUSF followed by 2 years of E-SQLNS will show an exuberance of connections (higher functional connectivity) than children receiving standard Bangladeshi rehabilitation feeds B-RUSF and SQLNS. This prediction is based on past work using EEG to examine the BEAN sample in Bangladesh, and differs from the sample in Boston, where the investigators anticipate that among healthy, normally nourished children, greater connectivity will be associated with better cognitive outcomes. The Core Toolkit will be deployed to the Bangladesh site to define its utility in prediction of executive dysfunction and emotional dysregulation in the context of low-income status, malnutrition and nutritional intervention. All nutritional intervention groups of malnourished children will also receive a set psychosocial stimulation curriculum that has been shown to be effective on severely malnourished children with therapeutic feedings.
