Patients' Quality of Life After Pilonidal Cyst Operations.

Biomedical research consists of two main parts. In the first part, the pilonidal cyst-specific quality of life questionnaire is compiled, adapted, validated, tested for suitability in assessing patients after pilonidal cyst operations. The second part will compare two pilonidal cyst operations. A prospective, comparative, randomized clinical study will be conducted.

The Association Between Skeletal Muscle Mass and Severity of Polycystic Liver Disease and Polycystic Kidney Disease

Primary sarcopenia is used to describe aging and progressed with the physiologic decline. Secondary sarcopenia is associated many chronic disease, including acquired immune deficiency syndrome, cancer, chronic heart failure, chronic lung disease, liver cirrhosis, chronic kidney disease and rheumatoid arthritis. In the past, nutrition status is evaluated by body mass index, mid-upper -arm circumference and serum albumin. Bioelectrical impedance analysis is also a common method to measured body composition, but bioelectrical impedance analysis will be affected by tissue edema and ascites. In contrast, cross-section imaging, such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance can analyzed abdominal muscle and fat accurately. Since computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging can evaluate the severity of polycystic liver and kidney disease. Investigators can use cross section imaging at 3rd lumber level to separate skeletal muscle and fat tissue. Previous studies showed the quantity and quality of abdominal muscle are important prognostic factor after liver transplantation. Besides, chronic kidney disease and receiving renal placement therapy lead protein catabolism and make patients with end stage renal disease have sarcopenia. Finally, patients with polycystic liver and kidney disease have organomegaly, which causes abdominal distention and poor appetite. Therefore, the aim of this study is to observe the association between skeletal muscle mass and the severity of disease and to study whether change in hepatic and renal volumes is associated with change in muscle mass.

Are the Combined Oral Contraceptive Pills Needed for Management of the Simple Ovarian Cysts in Reproductive Women?

Women will be managed by either of the two modalities and will be followed up by transvaginal ultrasound monthly for three successive months to evaluate the size and location of the functional ovarian cyst (follicular), to compare the effect of different modalities of management whether remission, regression, progression or persistence of functional ovarian cyst. The women will be assigned randomly to either study group to take oral contraceptive pills or to control group to take placebo. The 2 groups will be treated and followed up equally. Oral contraceptive pills will be given to the study group as follow: The women will receive one package of oral contraception (Cilest containing norgestimate 250 microgram + ethinyl estradiol 35 microgram) and will be counseled about how to take oral contraception and informed of possible side effects. They also will receive a diary card for recording oral contraception intake to be returned to the physician on the next period. An appointment for the women in this group will be scheduled at one month of treatment for the second ultra-sonography. If the ovarian cyst does not show remission, the women will continue the same treatment and will follow up in another month by transvaginal ultra-sound. If the ovarian cyst still persists or progresses at the second month, the women will be followed up for third month. All results of the two groups will be compared. Data will be collected, tabulated according to the standard statistical method.
