Prediction Model of Vitamin D Deficiency

Many studies have pointed out that patients with vitamin D deficiency have a longer stay in the intensive care unit and a poor prognosis. Previous multi- center prospective observational study in Taiwan reveals that the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in critically ill patients in northern Taiwan is 59%, and the prevalence of severe vitamin D deficiency is 18%. Several prediction models of vitamin D deficiency had been built for the general population but not patients admitted in intensive care units. This multi-center retrospective study aims to develop and validate a score-based prediction model for severe vitamin D deficiency in critically ill patients. Investigators will review the data of previous multicenter, prospective, observational study. For temporal validation, the data will be divided into a derivation cohort (first 80% of the data set based on chronology) and a validation cohort (the remaining data set). The development and validation of the models will be carried out following the recommendations established in the Transparency Reporting of a multivariable prediction model for Individual Prognosis or Diagnosis (TRIPOD) initiative.

Helicobacter pylori is a common pathogen causing upper gastrointestinal diseases including gastric ulcer and gastric cancer. Recent epidemiological findings have also shown that it is also related to colon cancer, metabolic syndrome, gut dysbiosis, glycemic control and insulin resistance. The aim of this study is to investigate whether the gut microbiota and insulin resistance of patients with H. pylori infection are abnormal. In addition, whether drinking fermented milk product with probiotic reduces Helicobacter pylori, improves gut microbiota, and increases butyrate-producing bacteria and insulin resistance.

Hypochlorous Acid Mouthwash, Oral Bacteria, and Staphylococcus Aureus

Mouthwash is one method of maintain oral health and to reduce the dental plaque and gum inflammation. However, the effects of mouthwash on oral bacteria were not consistent among different brands of them. The aims of present study were to determine the effects of a new designed mouthwash with hypochlorous acid on oral bacteria and Staphylococcus aureus. All participants were invited as a volunteer to attend this study from a private dental clinic and diagnosed by the same dentist. Patients with periodontal diseases were randomized selected as mouthwash group and mouthwash plus dental flossing device (La Chlogen, Taiwan) group. Patients for regular dental visit and without periodontal disease were invited as a control group having mouth rinse with water. After the inform consent was signed, participants completed the intervention study, saliva collection, and a simple survey under the guide of a dental assistant. Saliva samples were collected before and after the intervention for bacterial DNA extraction. A real-time polymerase chain reaction and S. aureus with serial dilutions were applied for the estimation of total oral bacterial count (TOBC) in saliva. An in vitro assay with CCK-8 reagent was apply to test the antibacterial ability of mouthwash.

Subacromial and subcoracoid impingement have been categorized as external impingement, one type of shoulder impingement syndrome (SIS). Differentiation between subacromial impingement and subcoracoid impingement are important in determining the treatment target. The thickness of the coracohumeral ligament (CHL) may affect coracohumeral distance (CHD), which has been suggested as a possible factor in developing subcoracoid impingement with subscapularis (SSC) lesion. Evidence that indicates the existence of abnormal SSC, CHL thickness and CHD in people with SIS is limited. The purposes of the study were (1) to evaluate the correlations between CHL thickness and CHD by using ultrasonography in people with SIS with and without SSC lesion, (2) to examine the difference in SSC/CHL thickness and CHD between people with SIS with and without SSC lesion.

With the continuous advancement of ultrasonic technology, nerve block in which drugs are injected into the periphery of the target nerve through ultrasonic guidance has become the mainstream method for postoperative pain control. The quadratus lumborum nerve block has been effectively and safely used in abdominal surgery (such as laparotomy, caesarean section, etc.), effectively reducing postoperative wounds and visceral pain. There is no research on the use of quadratus lumborum nerve block to control the pain of natural postpartum uterine contractions in the current literature, so the purpose of this experiment is to explore whether the quadratus lumborum nerve block can effectively reduce the pain of uterine contractions after vaginal delivery.
