Effect of tACS on the Recovery of Motor Control of the Upper Limb and Cerebral Connectivity in Chronic Stroke Patients

This project seeks to evaluate the effect of transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) on the recovery of motor control of the upper limb and associated neuronal synchrony during a 14-sessions (5-week) rehabilitation program for adult patients with diagnosis of stroke at chronic stage. Specifically, the stimulation on Gamma ranges, because the evidence available so far allows us to propose that the tACS in the Gamma range (around 70 Hz) facilitates motor execution. For this purpose, the experimental approach involves active (70 Hz in Gamma rhythm and 7 Hz, Theta rhythm) and sham tACS together with an analytical and integrated motor training with a double-blind and randomized design. Our hypothesis is that Gamma frequency tACS restores neuronal synchrony in Beta range, which enhances the upper limb motor recovery associated with a training program. Using specific motor control parameters, clinical scales and electroencephalography, the immediate and long-term (3 months after finished the training) behavioral and neurophysiological effect of this new neurostimulation paradigm (tACS plus training) for motor rehabilitation of stroke will be established.

Omega-3 and Exercise in Rheumatoid Arthritis People

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by autoantibody production and synovial membrane damage. It significantly impairs overall function and quality of life. Consumption of omega-3 (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and regular aerobic exercise (AEx) training are reported to have positive effects on the progression of RA. However, the mechanisms behind these benefits are still inconclusive. This study aims to investigate the effects of n-3 PUFA supplementation and AEx training on disease progression, cardiometabolic health, and quality of life, and their association with the plasma and synovial fluid levels of specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs) in subjects with RA. The study consists of a 16-week intervention period, during which participants will be randomly assigned in a double-blinded manner to one of four groups: placebo control (PLA), PLA+AEx, n-3, or n-3+AEx. The PLA groups will be given a gelatin-filled capsule, while the n-3 groups will be given n-3 PUFAs equivalent to 2.5 g/d of docosahexaenoic acid and 0.5 g/d of eicosapentaenoic acid. The AEx groups will exercise thrice per week on a stationary electronically braked cycle ergometer at 60-70% of their VO2peak for 50-60 minutes. Before and after the intervention, participants will undergo RA-specific and functional measurements, peak aerobic capacity test, and a dietary and physical activity assessment. Venous blood and synovial fluid from the knee joint will be collected. Changes in disease progression, cardiometabolic health, quality of life, and erythrocyte membrane composition to assess n-3 incorporation, SPM levels, inflammatory markers, and gene expression from blood and synovial fluid will be analyzed. The study aims to elucidate the SPMs that regulate the inflammatory gene expression pathways and associate them with improvements in disease progression, cardiometabolic health, and quality of life after n-3 PUFA supplementation and AEx training.

Evaluation of the Solvent Evaporation Time of Universal Adhesives in the Quality of Cervical Lesions Restorations

The aim of this study will be to evaluate the effect of prolonging solvent evaporation time on the 6- and 12-months clinical performance of two universal adhesive systems used as selective enamel etch (SEE). Methods: 140 restorations will be randomly placed in 35 subjects according to the following groups: SUP5 (Scotchbond Universal Plus evaporated for 5 s); SUP25 (Scotchbond Universal Plus evaporated for 25 s); GBU5 (Gluma Bond Universal evaporated for 5 s); GBU25 (Gluma Bond Universal evaporated for 25 s). Resin composite will be placed incrementally and light-cured. The restorations will be evaluated at baseline, after a week, 6 and 12 months using the FDI and USPHS criteria. Statistical analyses will be performed using appropriate tests (α = 0.05).

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the world has seen the need to identify groups of patients who experience various effects in the medium and long term after recovering from the initial illness. These medium- and long-term effects are collectively known as the post-COVID-19 condition, Long-COVID, or prolonged COVID. Current evidence indicates, with conservative estimates, that between 10% and 20% of the population could be affected. Its nature is varied and ranges from physical conditions such as chronic fatigue, dyspnea and muscle weakness, to neurocognitive (compromised memory, decreased concentration) and psychological (anxiety, depression, anguish, stress). Early recognition and treatment of this symptom burden is essential for physical recovery and mental health. Due to its multivariate nature, it has been suggested that optimal recovery of patients' quality of life would only be achieved to the extent that their main symptoms are addressed from an interdisciplinary perspective.
