The present study will use a randomized controlled design to investigate group differences between university students with self-reported stress (comparison group), ADHD, or a history of nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) in response to a four-week mindfulness instruction program across conditions (formal mindfulness program, informal mindfulness program, inactive control) in terms of the intervention's acceptability and effectiveness.

Evaluation of the Analgesic Benefit of Adding the Blocks of the Intermediate and Medial Femoral Cutaneous Nerves in Addition to the Femoral Triangle Block for Postoperative Analgesia After a Knee Replacement Surgery

Total knee replacement surgery can be associated with a significant postoperative pain burden and an inability to mobilize adequately, which can lead to the failure of the ambulatory course. Indeed, early mobilization is beneficial in this context in order to prevent complications related to immobility. The optimization of postoperative analgesia is therefore a key issue for the success of this intervention in an outpatient setting or during a short-term hospitalization since an adequate pain relief facilitate the earlier mobilization of the operated joint. Modern postoperative analgesia protocols recommend a multimodal approach, including the use of acetaminophen, anti-inflammatories, opioids and others as well as the use of nerve blocks. Some nerve blocks used for total knee replacement surgery, such as the femoral nerve block, do not preserve the motor skills of the operated limb, which may alter the clinical trajectory due to delayed mobilization due to weakening of the quadriceps, one of the extensor muscles of the knee. Currently, one of the blocks used to spare the motor functions is the block of the femoral triangle. Unfortunately, this block of the femoral triangle does not fully cover the skin component of the surgical incision used for a total knee arthroplasty. A solution to obtain a better quality of pain relief at the level of the cutaneous incision would be to add a block of the para-sartorial compartment, which makes it possible to cover the nerve territories not covered by the femoral triangle block. The hypothesis of this study is that the addition of the para-sartorial compartments (PACS) block, which aims to block the intermediate cutaneous femoral nerve, will improve the postoperative analgesia after total knee replacement surgery, compared to the classical isolated approach of the femoral triangle block (FTB).

Intergenerational Behavioral Intervention to Enhance Physical Activity in Older Adults at Risk for Alzheimer's Disease

This is a twelve-week pilot randomized controlled trial of a behavioral intervention in older adults at risk for Alzheimer's disease. Older participants are a subgroup from the PREVENT-AD longitudinal cohort. We will test whether a four-week intergenerational social motivation using a technology-based platform (intervention group) enhances physical activity relative to a control group. After a washout period, the two groups will be offered the opportunity to cross-over into the alternate condition.

Influence of a Gluten Free Food Guide on Diet Quality and Adherence to the GFD in Youth With Celiac Disease

Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune gastrointestinal disease that is caused by intolerance to gluten in the diet. The mainstay of treatment is a gluten-free diet (GFD). Children with CD on the GFD often have low micronutrient intakes (e.g. folate, iron) and high intakes of sugar and fat. Current Canadian nutrition guideline does not address these nutritional limitations. The investigation team developed a novel GF-food guide (GFFG). This randomized clinical trial aims to evaluate the impact of GFFG on diet quality and adherence to the GFD in newly diagnosed children and youth with celiac disease in the clinical setting. The investigators will compare dietary counselling using the GFFG versus the standard of care in children newly diagnosed with CD and their parents to see if participant care outcomes (diet quality, nutrition literacy, adherence to the GFD) improved over six months.

Quality of Life After Shouldice Repair

This research project aims to assess the quality of life (QOL) and pain/discomfort experienced by patients who have undergone primary inguinal hernia repair at Shouldice Hospital. Historically, postoperative mortality and symptom improvement have been the main outcomes assessed after hernia surgery, neglecting the patient experience. As QOL gains significance in hernia patient care, this study focuses on evaluating patient QOL before and after surgery, contributing to a better understanding of hernia surgery outcomes. Study Objectives: Determine preoperative quality of life. Determine patient-reported quality of life at 1 week after surgery. Determine patient-reported quality of life at 1 month after surgery. Determine patient-reported quality of life at 6 months after surgery. Evaluate changes in quality of life from the preoperative time to 6 months after surgery. Hypotheses/Research Questions: Does quality of life change after hernia surgery? What is the quality of life before and after primary unilateral inguinal hernia repair? Does hernia repair improve patient quality of life? Study Design: This is a prospective cohort pilot study involving primary unilateral inguinal hernia patients who received Shouldice repair at Shouldice Hospital. It includes chart reviews (medical histories and operative notes) and surveys at preoperative, 1-week, 1-month, and 6-month postoperative time points. Surveys are conducted using the EQ5D3L tool to measure health-related quality of life. Study Population: The study population includes male and female patients aged 16-90, of all nationalities and races, capable of English communication, in good general health, who had primary unilateral inguinal hernia repair at Shouldice Hospital. Exclusions encompass patients who had mesh repair, non-inguinal hernias, concurrent hernias, bilateral hernia repair, or emergency surgeries. Data Collection: Data is collected from patient survey responses, medical records, and charts. Surveys are administered via email at specific time points. A deferred consent process is used, and participants are informed about their rights and the ability to withdraw. Data is deidentified for privacy. Duration of Study: The study is expected to take 14 months, with a 3-month recruitment phase, a 6-month follow-up period, and 5 months for data analysis and write-up. The estimated participation time for each participant is 13 minutes, and no reminders are sent. Risks and Benefits: There are no known risks to participants, and no direct benefits are provided. Personal data is protected, and participation is voluntary. This study aims to contribute valuable insights into the quality of life of hernia surgery patients, particularly those who have undergone open tissue hernia repair at Shouldice Hospital.
