The Relationship Between Maternal Perinatal Depression and Feeding Behavior Among Primiparas

Improving Growth and Cognitive Development of the Disadvantaged Young Children in Resource Poor Setting

1. Burden: The period from birth to two years of age is the "critical window" for the promotion of optimal growth, health, and development. Insufficient quantities and inadequate quality of complementary foods, poor child-feeding practices and high rates of infections have a detrimental impact on growth. Approximately one-third of children less than five years of age in developing countries are stunted, and large proportions are also deficient in one or more micronutrients. An estimated six per cent or six hundred thousand under-five deaths can be prevented by ensuring optimal complementary feeding (CF) only. 2. Knowledge gap: The unprecedented global social and economic crisis triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic poses grave risks to the nutritional status and survival of young children in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) including Bangladesh. In this situation families living below the poverty line may unable to provide their children adequately for meeting their nutritional requirement. In the face of poverty, animal-sourced foods are the first to be dropped from children's diets though these are the most vital protein sources. 3. Hypothesis: An intervention package (child feeding counselling, food voucher for animal source food, WASH and micronutrient powder) will improve child growth (difference of 0.35 in mean Length-for-Age-Z-score) and cognitive outcome (difference of 3.80 in mean cognitive outcome) in the selected intervention area from rural Bangladesh compared to control area. 4. Objective: The general objective of this study is to evaluate an intervention package that should improve growth, cognitive development, appropriate complementary feeding practice, and water sanitation and hygiene (WASH) practices of children at risk of stunting in resource poor settings. 5. Methods: We will use a community-based cluster randomized controlled three arms trial. The trial will be carried out in thirty clusters/wards (two to three villages making up each ward) within six unions of the Atpara Upazila in the Netrokona district. There will be three study groups (209 mothers/infant pairs in each treatment group I, II, and 209 mothers/infant pairs in the control group). The effect of the intervention package will be compared to the control group with similar population demography receiving only counselling on appropriate infant and young child feeding messages.

The Effect of Baby-Led Weaning and Traditional Complementary Feeding Education on Infant Development

The goal of this [type of study: clinical trial] is to compare compare the nutrition, development, obesity risk and anemia risk of the infant with the BLW method and TCF method given to the mothers of infants who have switched to complementary feeding. The main question[s] it aims to answer are: - Does the training on the GTB and BLW method given in accordance with the developmental age of the baby in months have an effect on the feeding and development of the babies in both groups? - Does the training on the GTB and BLW method given in accordance with the developmental age of the baby in months have an effect on the obesity risk and anemia risk of babies in both groups? Participants will participate in each session of the complementary nutrition trainings given in accordance with their age on a monthly basis and will provide a diet suitable for the trainings. Researchers will compare the nutritional parameters, developmental levels, and height and weight gains of infants fed with the BLW and TCF method to see the effect of complementary feeding education on the nutrition and development of infants and whether there is anemia and obesity risk.

Optimized Complementary Feeding With or Without Home Fortification Prevents Decrease of Micronutrient and Growth

Malnourished among under-five children characterized by growth faltering is a public health concern in Indonesia. It requires serious action from the governments because of the prevalence of underweight, stunting, and wasting are increasing. These impacts are irreversible resulting in the low quality of future human resources. Several studies showed that growth faltering among under-five children starts at age six months when the amount of breastmilk reduced, complementary feeding initiated, and risk for infection is increased. A rapid growth phase also causes growth faltering at age 6-24 months. The inadequate amount and low quality of food during this period can also lead to reducing nutritional status. The Indonesian Government released a national policy in 2013 to address undernutrition among under-five children called the Indonesia President Regulation No. 42/2013 regarding national movements on the acceleration of nutritional programs to address micronutrients deficiency among under-five children by providing micronutrient powder (MNP) (called Taburia) for children aged 6 - 59 months. Our literature review documented that there is no study ever conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of MNP (Taburia) in improving the weight and height of the children. Moreover, behavioral modification interventions to promote food diversification to improve nutrient intake and to prevent micronutrient deficiency are also never conducted. Based on the rationale and study concept, the following hypotheses are 1). Promotion of optimized complementary feeding along with or without multi-micronutrient powder or MNP (namely taburia) can prevent reductions in nutrient intake and density; serum ferritin and zinc levels; and anthropometric z-score index compared to controls, and 2) provision of MNP can prevent reductions in nutrient intake and density; serum ferritin and zinc levels; and anthropometric z-score index compared to controls.

Preparation of Complementary Feeding in Spain: a Cross-sectional Study

Study design: Cross-sectional study, survey based Study population: spanish people, caregivers of infants under 2 years old. Sample size: 1925 surveys. Study duration and research process: 10 days on-line survey that will be opened through a launching page. The survey is composed of 3 blocks. Statistical analysis: data will be analyzed using the Statistical Analysis System (SAS) package version 9.4 (or higher). The categorical variables will be presented in the form of lists of frequencies and percentages. For the quantitative variables (continuous or ordinal), indices of central tendency (mean, median) and dispersion (standard deviation and maximum and minimum values) will also be presented.

Providing Postnatal Breastfeeding Support Through the Canada Prenatal Nutrition Program

The Canada Prenatal Nutrition Program (CPNP) aims to improve birth outcomes among Canadian women in challenging life circumstances, including those who are adolescents, newcomers, low-income or single mothers. The CPNP strongly promotes breastfeeding prenatally, resulting in high initiation rates, but continued postnatal support is needed to optimize breastfeeding duration and exclusivity. The aim of this research is to investigate the effects of adding postnatal lactation support as an extension to the CPNP on breastfeeding duration and exclusivity in the first six months postpartum. The research will be conducted at two CPNP sites in Toronto, Parkdale Queen West Community Health Centre and The Stop Community Food Centre. A quasi-experimental design will be used to compare the infant feeding practices of CPNP clients before and after introduction of a postnatal lactation support intervention which will include in-home professional lactation support and provision of high-quality breast pumps. These services will be delivered as CPNP program components and will be accessible to all clients at the two participating sites during the post-intervention period. Infant feeding practices will be assessed by a questionnaire administered at 2 weeks, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 months postpartum. The hypothesis is that significantly more mothers in the post-intervention group will be exclusively breastfeeding at four months postpartum. The effect is expected to be mediated through increased breastfeeding self-efficacy, which will be assessed using validated scales prenatally and at 2 weeks and 2 months postpartum.

Parkdale Infant Nutrition Security Targeted Evaluation Project: Infant Feeding

In Toronto Ontario, the Parkdale Community Health Centre operates a community outreach program entitled Parkdale Parents' Primary Prevention Project (5P's). The 5P's provides weekly pre- and post-natal support and education programs for clients. This includes an infant feeding program for mothers with infants 0-6 months (Feeding Tiny Souls). The 5P's has a diverse client-base; the program is aimed at women who are in challenging life circumstances, therefore, clients may include low-income or single mothers and newcomers to Canada. The aim of this project is to investigate the incidence, duration and exclusivity of breastfeeding and timely complementary feeding based on level of maternal participation in components of a pre and postnatal community outreach program. Exploring infant feeding practices is an evaluation component that will not only characterize infant feeding practices within a vulnerable population, but will elucidate whether there are areas of concern that need to be expanded upon within pre or postnatal programming. A prospective infant feeding questionnaire will be administered to participants at 2 weeks and at 2, 4 and 6 months postpartum. The study population will consist of women who enrolled in 5P's prenatally. The hypothesis is that exclusive breastfeeding rates will be low, but higher breastfeeding rates will be observed among women who utilize provided postnatal services more readily.
