Filter by:The aim of this study is to test the efficacy of alanyl-glutamine supplementation in the treatment of C. difficile infection. We hypothesize that alanyl-glutamine when given with standard antibiotic treatment for C. difficile infection will decrease diarrhea, mortality and recurrent disease.
Pediatric joint infections are a common diagnostic dilemma encountered by treating orthopaedic surgeons. No single test is sensitive or specific enough to stand alone in determining the presence of joint infection. The purpose of this study is to test the usefulness of a chemical test strip to detect infection in fluid that is removed from a joint (intra-articular aspiration) in pediatric patients. The test strip measures an enzyme called leukocyte esterase, which has been shown to be useful in detecting the presence of infection in fluids from other parts of the body. This study will assess the efficacy of the leukocyte esterase test as a diagnostic tool for evaluating pediatric joint infections. The hypothesis of the study is that a positive leukocyte esterase test identifies a septic joint in pediatric patients undergoing intraoperative joint aspiration.
The aim of the intervention is to examine the effect of the bacterial strain BB-12, provided for 6 mo, on the prevalence of infections and allergic manifestations in small children, and how BB-12 affects the immune system, the gastrointestinal tract and the microbiota. Children are enrolled during 2 winter seasons.
The purpose of this study is to compare the incidence rate of infection in surgical patients with closed fractures treated prophylactically with Cefazolin versus Vancomycin in the peri-operative period. The hypothesis of this study is that patients undergoing surgical treatment for closed fractures who are treated prophylactically with Vancomycin will have a lower incidence rate of infection than patients who are treated prophylactically with Cefazolin.
Antibiotic-associated diarrhea (AAD) and particularly Clostridium difficile-Infection (CDI) are the most common causes of healthcare associated infectious diarrhea. In light of the results obtained in a limited number of randomized clinical trials in subjects with AAD and CDI in comparison with the widespread occurrence of these diseases, it is felt that the addition of a well-controlled clinical trial in a western environment would add value to support the use of a specific probiotic to counteract these diseases.
This Phase II study will evaluate the safety and efficacy of three fluoroquinolone ophthalmic agents to determine the optimal treatment in patients with infectious corneal ulcers.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the Clostridium difficile vaccine to prevent primary symptomatic C. difficile infection (CDI) in participants at risk for CDI where there is a substantial unmet medical need. Primary objective: - To assess the efficacy of the C. difficile vaccine in preventing the onset of symptomatic primary CDI confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in adult participants aged >= 50 years who are at risk for CDI and have received at least 1 injection. Secondary Objectives: Efficacy: - To assess prevention of symptomatic PCR-confirmed primary CDI cases after 3 injections administered at 0, 7, and 30 days. - To assess prevention of symptomatic PCR-confirmed primary CDI cases after completion of at least 2 injections. Immunogenicity: - To describe the immunogenicity to toxin A and toxin B at specific time points in a subset of participant and in participants with CDI at Day 0 and Day 60. Safety: - To describe the safety profile of all participants who received at least 1 injection.
The goal of this clinical research study is to learn if the antiviral combination of telaprevir, pegylated Interferon Alfa 2a (PegIFN alfa-2a) and ribavirin (RBV) can prevent the virus from coming back after the liver transplant. Telaprevir, PegIFN alfa-2a, and RBV are different antiviral drugs that work in combination at different stages of the HCV infection to stop the virus.
The purpose of this trial is to make a comparison between the use of antiseptic silver alloy-coated silicone urinary catheters and the use of conventional silicone urinary catheters in spinal cord injured patients to prevent urinary infections.
A multicenter, prospective, non-inferiority, randomized and open clinical trial comparing levofloxacin with isoniazid in the treatment of latent tuberculosis infection in patients eligible for liver transplantation. Patients over 18 years of age on the waiting list for liver transplantation. Sample size: n=870 patients. HYPOTHESIS Levofloxacin treatment of latent tuberculosis infection, begun while on the waiting list for liver transplantation, is safer and not less effective than isoniazid treatment begun after transplantation when liver function is stable.
