Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program - Education (SNAP-Ed) is a national initiative with the goal of improving the health and wellbeing of low income families. University of Minnesota Extension every year offers nearly 4000 educational events, serving approximately 70,000 Minnesotans through the program. Extension is conducting an impact study to determine program effectiveness and assess sustained changes of participants and their families that can be directly attributed to programming on a larger and methodically sound scale.

A Study on the Effects of Midazolam on Delirium After Sevoflurane Anesthesia in Pediatric Strabismus Surgery

Sevoflurane with its rapid induction and emergence, hemodynamic stability, and nonirritating airway properties, has acquired widespread acceptance in children. However, sevoflurane has been reported to be associated with emergence agitation in children, with a reported incidence of up to 80%. The purpose of this study is to verify that the prophylactic use of midazolam, which is a GABA A receptor inhibitor, given five minutes before the end of strabismus surgery reduces the incidence of emergence agitation after sevoflurane anesthesia in children. Simultaneously, this study aims to find out the proper dose of midazolam with minimum disturbance to patient's emergence time.

The purpose of this study is to understand reading abilities of children born preterm: their cognitive profiles, the neural basis of good and poor reading abilities, and the behavioral and neural factors that predict persistent difficulties. The investigators hope to learn - what specific skills correlate reading skills - if preterm children have different cognitive profiles than full term children with respect to reading - if cognitive skills measured in kindergarten predict reading ability in the second grade - if parts of the brain are associated with reading skill - whether brain characteristics in kindergarten predict reading in second grade.

This is a feasibility study that will be performed at the Astrid Lindgren Children´s Hospital, Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden. It will involve 50 patients, randomized to either conservative, non-operative, treatment with antibiotics OR surgery. The study will test an computerized randomization system, the availability of patients willing to participate in the trial and the trial protocol. The investigators will assess the characteristics of the patients who agree to participate in the study and those who do not. The investigators will explore short term outcome and design suitable long term outcome measures.
