Behavioral Parent Training for Families With Deaf and Hard of Hearing Preschoolers

Children who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) rarely receive behavioral interventions to prevent the long-term costly outcomes of behavior problems. This project will systematically adapt an evidence-based parent training intervention to increase its acceptability and relevance for parents of young DHH children. Effectiveness of the adapted intervention and its implementation with parents of young DHH children followed in "real world" hearing healthcare clinics will be assessed.

Quantitative EEG During Anesthesia Emergence in Children

Most drugs used in general anesthesia work on various receptors in the human brain, causing unconsciousness, loss of memory, and loss of reflection of the autonomic nervous system. After the anesthesia, baseline physiological function will be attained by administration of some reversal drugs or as the time goes by. In this process, various side effects may occur. Emergence delirium (ED) is a representative behavioral disturbance after general anesthesia in children and that can cause several problems during the recovery period. Previous EEG studies reported that this phenomenon is related to hyperexcitation of the brain, and occurrence of epileptiform discharges during anesthesia induction may indicate an increased vulnerability for the development of a functional brain disorder in these children. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is no studies concern evaluating quantitative EEG parameters for prediction of this postoperative negative behavior in children.

Family Healthy Living Early Intervention Program

The Childhood Healthy Weights Early Intervention Program (EIP) is a family-based pilot program that will promote healthy lifestyle practices for families whose children are off the healthy weight trajectory (e.g., BMI ≥ 85th percentile for age and sex) that do not need the intensive services of medically supervised programs. It is a lifestyle behaviour approach for promoting healthy weights in children. The EIP program consists of 10 weekly intervention sessions (1.5 hours per session) followed by 4 maintenance sessions and is age specific (age 8-12). During the intervention, participants will also have access to digital educational content that is supplementary to what is provided during the individual sessions. The program will be integrated and aligned with existing BC-specific childhood healthy weights programs (e.g. the HealthLinkBC Eating and Activity Program for Kids). The EIP pilot will run from October-December 2018 with 8 child programs (age 8-12). Participants who do not qualify for this program (e.g., BMI ≤ 85th percentile for age and sex) will be offered a 10 week online program which is similar in educational content as the EIP program.

CenteringParenting Clinical Intervention on Kindergarten Readiness in Early Childhood

Disparities in health begin in early childhood. Early life experiences influence brain development and have significant implications on future health and developmental outcomes. Low-income children are at greater risk of developmental delays in large part due to a lack of an enriched environment. Disparities in early childhood development increase risk for stunted academic achievement throughout the life course. Primary care is a universal exposure in early childhood and therefore is also a significant entry point for promoting optimal child development. There is a need to provide effective, low-cost, and scalable interventions in primary care to support early childhood development.The CenteringParenting intervention is designed to reduce negative health and developmental outcomes within a model of group routine child health care. To date, there is no evidence of the benefits of the CenteringParenting intervention on school readiness, or improvements in parental behaviors that support optimal developmental milestones and achievement. The intent of this study is to determine the effectiveness of the CenteringParenting intervention on school readiness in early childhood, as measured by language development at 24 months, (in addition to health care utilization, child routine care maintenance, parenting stress, caregiver behaviors and attitudes).

Mood Change After General Anesthesia in Children

Emergence delirium (ED) is a representative behavioral disturbance after general anesthesia in children and that can cause several problems during the recovery period. Previous studies found that ED and postoperative behavioral problems might be connected. Preschoolers are the most vulnerable group in developing ED after general anesthesia, however, it is difficult to evaluate the psychiatric problems at this age. The Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) 1.5-5 is an internationally well-known standardized tool for assessment of developmental psychopathology, consisted of 99 problem items. Items are categorized as following syndrome scales: Emotionally reactive, Anxious/Depressed, Somatic complaints, Withdrawn, Attention problems, Aggressive behavior, and sleep problems. In this study, the investigators would observe the behavioral and emotional changes of the child using the CBCL 1.5-5 between before and after the general anesthesia.

The Great Ormond Street Hospital Top Child and Adolescent Health Study

The Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) Top child and adolescent health problems study aims to identify the top health concerns that parents/guardians and paediatricians in a tertiary hospital have for young people in England. 400 parents or guardians attending GOSH outpatients and 200 Paediatricians working at GOSH will be asked to rank a list of 30 child health concerns and results compared. Analysis will be done by demographics as well.

BOOSTH: Promoting Physical Activity in Primary Schools in Combination With Serious Gaming

Physical inactivity is considered to be one of the ten principal risk factors for death worldwide. Children need to perform one hour of daily moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity whereof at least twice a week these activities are of vigorous intensity. In 2010, the percentage of 4-11 year-old normoactive Dutch children was approximately 20%.Previous interventions that aimed to increase childhood physical activity produced small to negligible effects. One possible explanation is that individuals were not intrinsically motivated towards physical activity during the intervention period. Children spend a substantial amount of their time behind a game consule. There are a number of applications that motivate increase in physical activity in a fun way through engaging individuals in games that mix real and computing worlds. These games became known as serious games. In this study we want to investigate if the incorporation of a serious game BOOSTH in combination with an activity tracker and battle to stimulate physical activity behaviour in primary school children (grades 5th to 7th).
