Filter by:Cerebral Palsy (CP) is the most common childhood disorder that occurs with a lesion in the developing infant brain, seen in 2-3/1000 live births. CP is a posture, movement and tone disorder that occurs due to prenatal or postnatal causes. It is not progressive, but since the anatomy of the lesion and the physical development of the individual are not completed, the course of the disorder may vary throughout life. Accompanied by motor dysfunctions, it varies according to clinical types. In addition to this, various visual, sensory and behavioral problems, speech disorders that cause learning difficulties and cognitive problems can also be observed. Ophthalmic disorders are the most common problem in CP and can also affect the developmental process of the patient. Since ophthalmic disorders and neurological deficits are associated in CP, the relationship between neurological disorder and ophthalmic disorders has been investigated in the literature. The aim of this study is to establish the Turkish validity and reliability of the Visual Function Classification System (VFCS) specific to individuals with Cerebral Palsy (CP).
This is a feasibility study to begin investigating the possibility that early use of near vision glasses will improve vision in infants at risk of Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI), leading to further improvement in other areas of development. This active intervention, starting at either 2 or 4 months of age (depending on randomisation), could be more effective than waiting until a problem is detected before giving glasses. As this is a feasibility study, the investigators are looking at a small sample of babies (n=75) to see whether their parents/carers are willing to take part in a 3-arm study comparing two differently timed interventions to a control group, as well as looking at different aspects of the research plan in preparation for a larger final study.
This clinical trial aims to compare the effectiveness of our adaptive, therapeutic game to the effectiveness of the same game, without the adaptive component. In the adaptive game, the game entry level is adapted to the visual perceptual capacities of the child, as defined by the visual perceptual profile. In addition, the difficulty level of the adaptive game will adapt itself to the gaming results and behaviour of the child. The non-adaptive version of the game consists of the same set of mini-games, but the entry-level is the same for all children (basic or 0 entry-level) and gradually increased, independent of the gaming results, success and behaviour of the child. The researchers will use a double-blind, randomized controlled trial design, including children with a developmental age between 3 and 12 years old, a diagnosis of CVI, acuity >0.2, with sufficient manual coordination to control a mouse, keypad or touch screen. All children will use the gamified therapy program for three months, with a minimum of three times per week, 15- 20 minutes. A blinded evaluator will evaluate the effectiveness on the main components of the visual perceptual profile of the child (primary outcome), on eye tracking parameters, functional vision and quality of life, at the end and at three months follow-up. Enjoyment and user experience will be monitored closely during the intervention period. As usual and regular therapy of the children will not be influenced during the intervention period, we will ask the parents and/or caretaker to register all other relevant gaming and therapy activities performed during that period. It is hypothesized that children will benefit more from an individualized, adaptive training approach compared to the generic, non-adaptive version of the program.
The objective of the present study is to develop a therapeutic, adaptive, and enjoyable game that will be used by children with CVI between the mental age of 3 and 12 years. Such a game will be easy to use and implement by the children, their parents, and therapists.
