Local Hyperthermia for the Treatment of Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasias

Human papillomavirus(HPV) infect epithelial cells and have the capacity to stimulate cell abnormal hyperplasia, especially by those high-risk HPV types. HPV vaccine primarily targeting HPV6/11/16/18 has been available and makes it possible to prevent cervical cancer. However, a large population was left unvaccinated, specifically for those aged ones. In clinic, patients harboring high-risk HPV is quite prevalent in China or other developing nations. Removing the virus and prevention of malignant transformation is required. Mild local Hyperthermia with a certain temperature range has been successfully used in the treatment of some diseases. It has been utilised in the treatment of some neoplasm, fungal and HPV infections. Investigators' study found that local hyperthermia at 44°C could cleared HPV in more than half of the patients with plantar warts. Investigators also note the fact that in patients with multiple lesions, the clearance of the target lesion is commonly followed by clearance of other distant lesions, a phenomenon suggesting that local hyperthermia could aid in establishing a specific immune response to eliminate HPV.So the purpose of the study is to evaluation local hyperthermia in the treatment of cervical intraepithelial neoplasias grade I and II after 3 months, with positive high-risk type HPVs, and patients with positive testing for high risk HPVs. Appropriate control arms were designed for different conditions.

Preventing Persistent Pain and Reducing Depressive and Anxious Symptoms Following Mastectomy and Lumpectomy

The proposed study will be a pilot randomized controlled trial comparing treatment as usual (TAU) to treatment as usual plus a brief Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) intervention (TAU + ACT) with mastectomy and lumpectomy patients identified as at-risk for developing persistent post-operative pain. The ACT intervention is a single individual therapy session scheduled two weeks following surgery. Potential participants will be recruited from the University of Iowa Breast Cancer Clinic. A sample size of n = 30 for each arm will be recruited. An attrition rate of 20% is anticipated so the total N to be recruited for the study is 72 participants. Study measures will consist of self-report questionnaires and medical record data. Data will be collected prior to surgery, one-week after surgery, and 3 months after surgery.

Broccoli Sprout Extract in Preventing Recurrence in Patients With Tobacco-Related Head and Neck Squamous Cell Cancer

This study is being done to see whether Avmacol®, a dietary supplement made from broccoli sprout and seed extract powder, induces changes in inner cheek cells that may be protective against environmental toxins such as tobacco. There are three main goals of the study: 1. To learn whether the dietary supplement, Avmacol®, can stimulate cheek cells to repair damage from environmental toxins; 2. to learn how the body metabolizes Avmacol®, by measuring its byproducts in the participant's urine and blood; 3. to learn whether the immune system can be stimulated by Avmacol®, by studying the natural killer cells and T cells in the participant's blood.
