Filter by:This study will utilize a mixed methods design featuring quantitative assessment of symptoms in conjunction with collecting in-depth qualitative data. In this study, perceived stress, mental health symptoms and behaviors and other variables will be used to test how they will influence the daily functioning and service utilization for adolescent and adult burn related injury patients at Mercy Hospital St. Louis Burn Center. The data gathered in the interviews will explore these constructs in-depth for the participants.
This is a prospective, descriptive, pilot case series involving patients with significant burns who are candidates for reconstruction with Integra®. Subjects would have a small area of the wound would, at the time of excision, have the smallest sheet of thin Integra® (125 cm2) placed and be immediately autografted with a 3:1 meshed split-thickness skin graft. Of note, 125 cm2 represents approximately 0.7% of an average sized patient's total body surface area, so for even the smallest burns in our proposed trial, this area would represent a small portion of the patient's area of injury. The remaining injury areas would be covered with standard-thickness Integra® only.
About 20 participants will be enrolled in this trial if they have had an accident that damages both the dermal (outside) and epidermal (inside) layers of skin on up to 49% of their body. This condition is called full-thickness complex skin defects resulting from acute traumatic skin loss. Participants will be treated with StrataGraft skin tissue to evaluate it's safety and effectiveness for use in treating full-thickness complex skin defects.
This study will help provide information about how patients with burn handle two antibiotics (ceftolozane and tazobactam) and use that information to guide dosing recommendations for these patients. The 12 patients who complete the study will receive a single dose of 3 grams ceftolozane/tazobactam intravenously. We will collect blood and urine samples to determine how much of each antibiotic is in the body and urine at various times over a 24 hour period. This information will be used with previously published information from microbiology laboratories to perform simulations that will provide recommendations on optimal dosing recommendations of these antibiotics in patients with burns.
Study of the Efficacy, Safety & Tolerability of Serlopitant for Pruritus (Itch) After Burn Injury

Major surgery can result in blood loss that can require a blood transfusion during and/or after surgery. Tranexamic acid (TXA) is a medication that was first introduced in the 1960's as a treatment for heavy menstrual bleeding. Over the past 20 years, it has been used and studied in patients undergoing open-heart surgery, liver transplantation, and urologic surgery. Investigators believe tranexamic acid may possibly decrease bleeding related to major burn surgery, resulting in reduced blood loss, lower blood transfusion rates, and possibly decreased hospital costs related to your stay. In this study, prior to each surgical procedure to treat the participants burn injury, the participant will receive either the drug tranexamic acid or placebo. The placebo is a liquid that looks like the tranexamic acid medicine, but does not have any active ingredient in it. In this study, both the tranexamic acid and the placebo are considered research.
In this prospective, multi-center study, 200 patients from four participating Texas burn hospitals will be enrolled from admission to discharge. The clinical research study team will collect approximately 11 serum samples and clinical data related to sepsis and infection predictors from severely burned adult patients, ages 18-80 years old. All serum samples from participating sites will be shipped to the lead site, University of Texas Medical Branch. The University of Texas Medical Branch will then validate previously identified biomarkers while simultaneously identifying novel biomarkers through discovery proteomics.
The proposed study will test the hypothesis that Propranolol, fenofibrate and fenofibrate plus propranolol have therapeutic, physiological, and metabolic effects that will improve clinical outcomes, and the long-term recovery, rehabilitation, and QOL in burned patients.
This is an interventional pilot study of 40 burn inpatients. Specific aims of the proposed pilot study are to use bedside blood analysis with rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM) in severe burn patients to provide preliminary information on the nature of coagulation abnormalities and compare subject ROTEM coagulation profiles within 24 hours of burn injury (day 1) and on days 2, 3, 5, 7, 14 and 21 after burn injury.
