Filter by:Given the high incidence of burnout, depression, and suicidal ideation among Canadian healthcare providers (HCPs), there is an urgent need to support wellness through strengthening peer networks and engaging key stakeholders. This project will explore the capacity of digital tools to educate HCPs and enable them to support their mental health. The investigators will evaluate specific research questions: Are HCPs more aware of their wellness needs? Did burnout and stress decrease? Do HCPs feel more supported by their peers? The overarching objective is to contribute towards a culture prioritizing HCP wellbeing. The investigators hope to achieve this through two outcome-oriented objectives: 1) to create resources to promote HCP wellbeing and 2) to foster a web-based HCP community. This initiative integrates big data tools, interactive online content, and the Solving Healthcare podcast to improve HCP wellness. It is anticipated that HCPs will become more aware of their wellness needs, and once they are able to identify strategies to live healthier work lives, cultural changes will take place, leading to a new attitude surrounding HCP mental health. To complete these objectives, resources will be drawn from the HELP-MD physician database and an advisory circle, and will be disseminated via a web platform and the widely known Solving Healthcare podcast. The project's significance stems from the changes it will incite in both individuals and health care institutions, inspiring long term changes in workplace culture and teaching the next generation that a balanced work life is attainable.
The aim of this study is to develop and validate an Ecological Momentary Intervention APP for healthcare workers, in order to face of work-related stresses generated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Physician burnout is a global issue characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and low levels of personal accomplishment. Recent evidence suggests that organization-directed interventions were more likely to lead to reductions in burnout when compared to physician-directed interventions. More specifically, the leadership behaviors of the direct physician supervisor play a critical role in the well-being of physicians they supervise. As such, the aims of this project are: 1) To improve our understanding of the prevalence of burnout and professional satisfaction of physicians working at the Ottawa Hospital (TOH), and 2) To evaluate the relationship between the leadership qualities of direct physician supervisors (i.e. Division and Department Heads) and the well-being and burnout of their physicians. Specifically, a cross-sectional survey will be completed by physicians at TOH to assess their levels of burnout and satisfaction and the leadership qualities of their direct physician supervisors.
The goal of the Professional Development Coaching Program is to allow trainees to understand their development over time, find meaning and purpose in their work, and identify their strengths and how to use these to overcome challenges and stressors. Additionally, the program connects trainees with a faculty member who will work with them, grow to know them in-depth over time, and provide meaningful guidance throughout the relationship. There is an additional benefit to the coaches themselves, who are able to connect with other faculty coaches in a rewarding way, that provides faculty development in leadership development and positive psychology, and space to interact with a group of like-minded physicians.
Residents and interns are prone to emotional and physical exhaustion, also known as burnout. Burnout has not been studied much in physicians working in lower-middle income countries. We conducted this cross-sectional study at two institutes to determine the burden of burnout among internal medicine residents and to identify triggering and protective factors associated with burnout. An abbreviated version of the Maslach Burnout scale was used to measure burnout, and protective and triggering factors were recorded according to known factors.
Mind body exercises have long been used as a way for individuals to reduce stress and improve well-being. Recent studies indicate that yogic breathing (YB, also known as pranayama) could potentially impact both the mind and body by engaging both the physiological and neural elements and can thus be a specific tool that can be utilized by healthcare workers to combat burnout and decrease perceived levels of stress. Our aim is to understand and measure both subjectively and objectively the effects of long-term yogic breathing on stress levels in anesthesia personnel. This will be a single arm longitudinal trial designed to evaluate the feasibility and estimate the efficacy of implementing a yogic breathing program for stress reduction among anesthesiology practitioners at one academic medical center. The primary aim of the trial is to estimate the correlation between participant stress with average duration of yogic breathing over time. Secondarily the feasibility of implementing yogic breathing practices among anesthesiology practitioners will be evaluated. Feasibility measures will include recruitment rates, retention at 1year follow-up, and adherence to the yogic breathing program at 12 months.
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a novel coronavirus detected in Wuhan, China on December 2019. This virus is responsible for the infectious respiratory disease called Covid-19. The psychological effects of this epidemic are found among the general population, but also healthcare workers. Some studies have shown that psychological disorders such as stress, anxiety, depressive symptoms, insomnia, denial, anger and fear, post-traumatic stress disorder are emerging among healthcare workers. However, there is currently insufficient data to evaluate the burnout during the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this study is to understand the impact of the covid-19 epidemic on stress and burnout on healthcare workers and their coping strategies.
This is a pilot randomized waitlist control trial assessing if the feasibility of using a mobile mindfulness app to treat emotional distress and burnout amongst nurses taking care of COVID-19 patients. This trial will help inform the study team if dissemination the intervention to a large number of nurses in a short time period is feasible, and if the intervention has evidence of a clinical impact.
In this study, the investigators aim to examine the effects of art therapy in reducing burnout in healthcare providers. Using the Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey for Medical Personnel, the investigators will measure burnout in Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) providers before and after the administration of a 4-week art therapy group.
The current pandemic highlighted an urgent need for early interventions to mitigate the psychological effects of extreme work demands that healthcare workers currently experience. This project aims at developing a data driven monitoring system to efficiently track work-related stress reactions over time. The system will also include a self-awareness intervention grounded on evidence-based strategies to improve workers' recovery. The solution will be delivered through a mobile application for a rapid implementation among healthcare workers and related professions. The mobile application will be developed through an initial analysis of pilot data, a factorial experiment and a user-experience analysis. Qualitative user experience data will also be used to validate the functionality of the monitoring system. The solution developed in this project will be easily scalable to related occupations, for example workers at elderly homes and social workers. After the pandemic, it can also be used as a preventive intervention for workers who are at risk of burnout and as a support for patients returning to work after treatment for common mental disorders.
