Filter by:Here we will investigate the effect of sulforaphane, provided as a broccoli sprout extract (BSE) on blood glucose in pre-diabetic individuals without metformin treatment. This will address whether BSE could be used to improve glucose control in drug-naïve pre-diabetic individuals. The participants will receive BSE or placebo in a randomized double-blind parallel arm study. The participants will take their study compound once daily over 12 weeks. The primary study variable is fasting glucose.
Individuals eating identical meals present high variability in post-meal blood glucose response making comparisons challenging. This study evaluates in 40 healthy and fasted participants whether the postprandial glucose response upon a standardized breakfast is dependent on gut microbial richness. Gastric emptying rate, intestinal transit time, insulin, appetite hormones and measures of the intestinal microbiome and fermentation will also be analyzed in the context of postprandial glucose metabolism.

Many provinces in Indonesia have some well known traditional foods that are widely consumed, but it remains unknown whether traditional ethnic dietary patterns can confirm healthy diets. High quality diet is associated with reduced risk of metabolic diseases and modulated gut microbiota. Moreover, the relationship between dietary quality and microbiota, a potential mediator of metabolic disease, has not been studied.
Hypothermic cardiopulmonary bypass results in peripheral vasoconstriction and heparin trapping. Hypoperfusion and ischemic-reperfusion injury are associated with systemic inflammatory response, while insufficient and delayed neutralization of heparin by protamine may contribute to more blood loss during rewarming stage. Nitroglycerin infusion, an NO-related vasodilator, is an established and effective treatment for unstable angina, myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, and perioperative hemodynamic management for cardiac surgery. Therefore, we hypothesize that nitroglycerin infusion during rewarming corrects systemic ischemic stress and facilitates heparin neutralization in cardiac surgery.
