Filter by:This project will develop and pilot test a new smartphone-based system for AUD patients, their partners, and clinicians called PartnerCHESS. PartnerCHESS will integrate key features of ABCT and A-CHESS. PartnerCHESS will also include a Clinician Report to automatically alert clinicians of patients at risk of relapse and offer other information on how recovery is proceeding. The project has three specific aims: 1. Integrate A-CHESS with key features of ABCT to create PartnerCHESS to serve patients, partners, and clinicians. 2. Conduct a pilot test (a small randomized clinical trial) of PartnerCHESS to estimate effect size and refine the protocol, procedures, recruitment strategy, measurements, and operations for use in a large RCT. 3a. Decide whether to pursue an R01 application, and if so, 3b. plan for the R01.
This study aims to examine the effect of practicing short-bout handgrip and isometric exercises on nicotine craving, smoking urges and withdrawal symptoms in adult smokers undergoing acute tobacco abstinence. The study is a randomized controlled trial to test the effect of practicing a set of short-bout exercises (10-second exercise) on reducing nicotine craving and withdrawals. Smokers, who have been abstinent from tobacco use for 9 hours, will join a guided exercise session using 10s-E or a healthy-diet (HD, control) intervention session, and complete a craving assessment before and 2 assessments after the respective intervention session. Primary outcomes will be nicotine craving, smoking urges and withdrawal symptoms.
The purpose of this study is to test the effects of messages communicating the risks (i.e., health harms, addictiveness) of indoor tanning delivered via mobile text messaging among young adult women ages 18 to 30 years who meet screening criteria for indoor tanning addiction.
Chronic drug addiction is not only associated with increased mental health symptoms, such as anxiety and depression, but also with brain (neural and cognitive) deficits. These neurocognitive deficits (NCDs) in memory, attention, decision-making, self-control and judgement disturb normal daily functioning and attempts for abstinence. These NCDs are also associated with worse long-term treatment outcomes. Current treatment programs for addiction to opioids and amphetamines are mainly focused on abstinence from illicit drugs with or without assistance of medications, with the assumption that these NCDs will subsequently heal. However, NCDs are found to persist even after a long-term abstinence and are thought to contribute to relapse, decreases quality of life, or lack of reintegration into society. Furthermore, NCDs (particularly related to attention and memory) are considered a potential obstacle for engagement in therapy services for addiction and associated mood, anxiety and trauma-related comorbidities (i.e., cognitive-behavioral therapies). Brain rehabilitation programs focused on compensatory strategies and training exercises for NCDs associated with traumatic brain injuries, stroke, multiple sclerosis and schizophrenia has consistently been found to improve functioning and long-term outcomes for these populations. There have been a few preliminary attempts to transplant cognitive rehabilitation with substance use populations, with some limited promise. However, these previous studies failed to link cognitive strategies with the drug use and affective/craving symptoms experienced by patients and also did not fully incorporate knowledge gained from neuroscientific research on opioid and/or methamphetamine addiction specifically. The aim of this study is to characterize clinical efficacy for an intervention targeting NCDs in opioid and/or methamphetamine addiction by enhancing awareness and use of neurocognitive skills in the context of substance use recovery. This aim will be accomplished by randomizing 80 subjects with opioid and/or methamphetamine use disorder who are already enrolled in substance use treatment in the state of Oklahoma to also complete a novel "Neurocognitive Empowerment for Addiction Treatment" (NEAT) program developed by a group of investigators at Laureate Institute for Brain Research, Tulsa, Oklahoma. NEAT will be novel in (a) its use of cartoons, brain awareness games and real-life scenarios to ensure it is interactive and engaging, (b) the focus on the role of neurocognitive deficits in recovery from substance use and co-occurring mental health symptomatology, and (c) its incorporation of neuroscientific findings specific to substance use to the training and exercise strategies. Subjects will be followed up for twelve months after starting the program with different measures for addiction and mental health recovery to explore the efficacy of NEAT compared to the control intervention. Using LIBR's cutting-edge neuroimaging facilities before and after interventions, this study has the unique opportunity to monitor not only clinical outcomes but also potential changes NEAT may have on brain structure and function. In case of finding reasonable clinical efficacy for NEAT, it will be hopefully integrated as a manualized brain rehabilitation program to the substance use treatment programs.
The main objective of this study is development of the Positive Peer Journaling (PPJ) intervention and the feasibility, acceptability, and logistics of treatment delivery. A second objective is to observe whether PPJ is associated with improvement in hypothesized outcomes. The primary outcomes the investigators will examine are enhanced treatment retention and reduced recurrence of substance use. The investigators will also explore the association between the intervention and a set of hypothesized mediators of the effect of the intervention on outcomes, e.g., improvement in mood and satisfaction with recovery.
This research is being done to find out whether an app based cognitive behavior therapy called reSET improves the adherence to and outcome of buprenorphine treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD) in the setting of a Hub and Spoke implementation system.
Long-term aim is the definition of a setup of mobile sensors and their integration in a mobile infrastructure that allows the prediction of stress related alcohol intake in an ambulatory setting. Here, we aim to identify stress- and alcohol cue-related physiological markers in a lab experiment to assess interactions between acute psychological vs. physical stress exposure and alcohol cue-exposure regarding their effects on measures relevant for the development and maintenance of Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). Further, we aim to identify neural correlates in brain circuits of motivational, cognitive, and affective processing. In addition to applying established stress-related markers, we will integrate innovative sensor-based measures.
Smartphones have become a part of everyday life, but with some problems. Researches have pointed out that smartphone addiction can cause both physical and mental problems.
This trial (Phase II) will assess the different methods of supporting families in finding mental health and/or addictions (MHA) services for youth. Youth with MHA issues and their families are particularly vulnerable in the MHA system, due to a lack of specialized support and complicated transitions between services. This study will assess the potential impact of Navigation on youth MHA symptom reduction or functional improvement, family functioning, satisfaction with MHA services, as well as the cost-benefit of Navigation. This project will seek to determine whether there is a difference for those youth with MHA issues and their families who receive Navigation over those who find and access MHA care on their own.
This study aims to examine the modification of the hypothesized imbalance between goal-directed and habitual behavior and its neural correlates in smokers. Two interventions will be used as add-on trainings to a smoking cessation program.
