Restorative Environments for Gait Therapy With VR

The aim of our study is to investigate the effects of landscapes during gait therapy. The investigators will evaluate the impacts of restorative landscapes as they occur in urban, rural and forest environments. Older people will experience those landscapes using virtual reality (VR) goggles during their gait training. The investigators expect the landscapes to have an effect on the following three aspects: (1) stress reduction, (2) restoration of attention and (3) change in gait parameters. For this purpose, volunteers who are currently inpatient in one of our study centers and already participating in gait therapy will be assigned to a group. The control group will receive the standard therapy. The participants of the intervention groups will receive five additional VR training sessions to the standard therapy. In these sessions, the participants will walk through urban, rural and forest landscapes and perform balance improvement exercises. The five training sessions will take place within ten days. Allocation to the control or intervention groups and their landscapes is random. At the start and end of participation, tests defining stress levels and gait parameters are carried out so that comparisons can be made between before and after treatment. The goal of the study is to find out which type of landscape supports restoration and can therefore contribute to greater gait stability. The investigators expect that improved gait stability will be promoted by stress reduction and increased attention induced by the virtual environments. The investigators are investigating the consequences of repeated application of virtual landscapes and the relationship between the effect of the landscape and the preferences and habits of the study participants.

Neuropsychological Patterns of Suicide Ideators and Suicide Attempters

The present study consists of 3 projects in total and aims to investigate the (neuro-) psychological patterns from suicidal ideation to suicidal behavior as well as the effects and feasibility of ASSIP Home Treatment. The overall aim of project 1 is to determine (neuro-) psychological differences between suicide attempters, suicide ideators, a clinical control group, and healthy controls. Study participants in project 1 will participate in a one-time (neuro-) psychological assessment. Project 1 of this study is an observational cross-sectional study with four groups that will be conducted at the University Hospital of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy Bern (Switzerland): Patients with at least one suicide attempt in their past (SUAT), patients with suicidal ideation (SUID), patients from the same clinical cohort, without neither suicidal behavior or ideation (CLIN) and the healthy group (HLTH). The cohorts to be examined (SUAT & SUID) will be compared to the two control groups (CLIN & HLTH). Only people who have signed the informed consent and meet the eligibility criteria can participate in this study.

Probing the Role of Feature Dimension Maps in Visual Cognition: Impact of Salience Level (Expt 1.1)

How does one know what to look at in a scene? Imagine a "Where's Waldo" game - it's challenging to find Waldo because there are many 'salient' locations in the picture, each vying for one's attention. One can only attend to a small location on the picture at a given moment, so to find Waldo, one needs to direct their attention to different locations. One prominent theory about how one accomplishes this claims that important locations are identified based on distinct feature types (for example, motion or color), with locations most unique compared to the background most likely to be attended. An important component of this theory is that individual feature dimensions (again, color or motion) are computed within their own 'feature maps', which are thought to be implemented in specific brain regions. However, whether and how specific brain regions contribute to these feature maps remains unknown. The goal of this study is to determine how brain regions that respond strongly to different feature types (color and motion) and which encode spatial locations of visual stimuli extract 'feature dimension maps' based on stimulus properties, including feature contrast. The investigators hypothesize that feature-selective brain regions act as neural feature dimension maps, and thus encode representations of salient location(s) based on their preferred feature dimension. The investigators will scan healthy human participants using functional MRI (fMRI) in a repeated-measures design while they view visual stimuli made salient based on different combinations of feature dimensions. The investigators will employ state-of-the-art multivariate analysis techniques that allow them to reconstruct an 'image' of the stimulus representation encoded by each brain region to dissect how neural tissue identifies salient locations. Each participant will perform a challenging task at the center of the screen to ensure they keep their eyes still and ignore the stimuli presented in the periphery, which are used to gauge how the visual system automatically extracts important locations without confounding factors like eye movements. Across trials and experiments the investigators will manipulate 1) the 'strength' of the salient locations based on how different the salient stimulus is compared to the background, 2) the number of salient locations, and 3) the feature value(s) used to make each location salient. Altogether, these manipulations will help the investigators fully understand these critical salience computations in the healthy human visual system.

The new professional profiles highlight the need to incorporate competences such as self-regulation, communication or growth mindset in the academia. Not only is this important for employability; a step further is needed. It's necessary to equip learners with knowledge, skills and attitudes that help them become agents of change and shape sustainable futures in our current complex society. Within the framework of an agreement signed between the University of Granada (UGR), Spain, and, one of the leading real state firms in Spain, Cívitas, a course and a parallel study have been launched that will provide research and training in these competences at a degree level. It is part of the Sustainable Human Development Training Pathway of the Vice-Rectorate for Equality, Inclusion and Sustainability. The main objective of the study is to test whether participating in a competence-based course can improve students' cognitive, emotional and personal traits as well as academic performance. Together with this main purpose, the present study also aims to compare the effects of two competence-based programs on the students' ability to improve specific aspects of cognition, emotional intelligence, creativity or academic performance among others. Both programs involve training sustained attention and an accepting and open attitude though they differ in several aspects of their methods, intention and aims. Drawing conclusions from the research and outcomes, pedagogies which are best suited to develop theses competences at the Higher Education level will be suggested. Assessment and certification of this kind of competences will also be proposed.

Dynamic Difficulty Adjustment in a P300 Speller Task for Attention Training

This study compares different adaptation approaches in a P300-based BCI neurofeedback training to improve short-term attention. Participants will spell several words on a computer by focusing on a letter on the screen while their brain activity is recorded (P300 speller). The difficulty of this task will be adapted to train their attention. Their cognitive abilities will be evaluated using a random dot kinematogram, where they are asked to indicate the direction a fraction of moving dots on the computer screen is going in, before and after the training to analyse any improvements. Questionnaires will be used to compare the perceived task load of the different adaptation approaches.
