Does Rapid Mobilisation Improve Length of Stay and Outcomes Post THR

This study looks to examine the effect of attempting initial postoperative walking with a patient following a total hip replacement. Currently patients rest in bed for approximately 24 hours following their operation before walking. The intervention group would aim to commence walking at between 4-6 hours after their operation. Outcome measures to be examined would be: length of hospital stay, patient experience of physiotherapy treatment, the time taken for patients to reach functional milestones and number of postoperative medical complications. The study is designed as a randomised controlled trial where participants would be separated randomly into two groups. One group would form the intervention group and start physiotherapy and attempted walking 4-6 hours after their operation. The other group would form the control group and would remain on the current standard rehabilitation protocol.

Patent Foramen Ovale and the Risk of Postoperative Delirium Following Elective Hip and Knee Arthroplasty Surgeries

This study will involve patients who are planned to have hip or knee replacement surgeries. They will undergo a Transthoracic Echocardiogram study (an ultrasound of the heart) to look for a Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO). A PFO is a hole in the heart that everyone is born with and in most cases eventually closes by adulthood. However, it does not always close in all people. The investigators will compare the participants as two groups - those with a PFO, and those without, and look for differences in delirium in their postoperative stay. This will help us look for an association between postoperative delirium and the presence of a PFO.

Effect of Nervus Cutaneous Femoris Lateralis-Blockade on Moderate Pain Responders After Total Hip Arthroplasty

The patients will be included the 1. or 2. day after surgery. All THA patients will be screened. Those reporting VAS > 40 during active 30 degrees hip flexion will be asked to participate. Included patients will receive 2xNCFL (singleshot) first placebo (8 ml saline) and then ropivacaine (8 ml ropivacaine 7,5mg/ml) or the other way around (randomized). There will be 45 minutes between the two blockades. The blockades will be ultrasound guided.

Oxycodone Versus Intravenous Morphine for Postoperative Analgesia After Hip Surgery
