Filter by:The investigators will compare the effect of spinal anesthesia to general anesthesia on the level of high sensitivity cardiac biomarkers in patients undergoing hip or knee arthroplasty. The investigators will also measure renal biomarkers in urine to evaluate kidney injury in the postoperative period.
While bracing has been shown to be beneficial for patients with osteoarthritis (OA) in terms of function and strength, whether these unloader braces are also similarly beneficial after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) surgery needs to be examined. Therefore the investigators questioned whether wearing a brace that has previously been shown to increase strength and function in OA patients can also increase strength and function in patients after TKA.
At the Ohio State University, and across the country, surgical patients admitted to the hospital are over-prescribed a significant amount of opioid medications upon discharge to home. Recent studies reveal that a large percentage of patients prescribed opioid medications after surgery have approximately half of the prescribed medication left over. This study aims to evaluate reported opioid use after surgery in patients undergoing major orthopedic surgery in order to better approach the issue with current opioid use and abuse trends while still providing adequate medical care and pain management to patients
