Filter by:The One Hospital ClinicalService Project is an integrated system composed by a network of International Hospital Departments, a clinical data repository and a shared environment for the collection, management, analysis and reporting of clinical and diagnostics data from patients treated by Medtronic therapies or patients wearing Medtronic implantable devices used within their intended use. The One Hospital ClinicalService is composed by a suite of systematic, data-guided activities designed to bring about immediate improvements in health delivery in particular settings. Data are prospectively collected. An independent committee of physicians prospectively identifies key clinical questions on a yearly basis for development of quality improvement activities, analyses and publications. A charter, approved by Hospital Istitutional Review Boards or other Hospital entities, assigns the ownership of data to the centers and governs the conduct of the project and the relationship of the scientific committee and Medtronic. Hospital is the data controller, while Medtronic is the data processor on behalf of the Hospital. Data collected for quality improvement purposes may be mined to perform clinical research.

ECG is one of the most important non-invasive method to diagnose CAD and arrhythmia. However, clinically it still has its limitation. Because the electrical field could induce a magnetic field, the newly developed non-contact technique, magnetocardiography, was established to detect the local magnetic field component of the heart. It is safe and more convenient. In this study, we try to define and validate the magnetocardiographic patterns in the patients with cardiac arrhythmias or ischemia.
Hemodialysis patients have a rate of fatal arrhythmias that is 40 times greater than the general population, but the causes and types of fatal arrhythmias they experience is unclear. The purpose of this prospective observational cohort study is to capture and characterize occult arrhythmias which occur in hemodialysis patients over a 6 month period. After informed consent and baseline assessment, 30 adult hemodialysis patients without a prior history of cardiac arrhythmias will undergo implantation of a continuous cardiac monitoring device (REVEAL, Medtronic). Three followup visits will be scheduled to download device data and quantify the number of potentially malignant arrhythmias which occur in study subjects during the 6 month period. Additionally, captured events will be monitored remotely via regular patient initiated transmission of device data every 2 weeks. Any serious occult arrhythmias detected will be immediately acted upon with a predefined management algorithm. Descriptive data and simple proportions will be used to describe the incidence and types of arrhythmias among the study cohort. Risks of this study include 1) potential loss of patient confidentiality 2) risks related to insertion of device including pocket hematoma, device infection, pain and discomfort secondary to procedure. These will be minimized by strict security measures to protect each patient's protected health information (PHI), preprocedural screening and insertion of monitoring devices by highly trained operators, and frequent careful direct patient followup.
The purpose of this retrospective observational study is to obtain information to confirm or contradict the results of prior studies on domperidone and sudden cardiac death. The population studied are the Saskatchewan residents who used domperidone or another type of medication known as a Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) between 1990 and 2005. Information will be collected from various sources including the Saskatchewan Health (SH) database and Cancer Registry.

Respiration failure type 2 is loss of the lungs ability to take up oxygen (O2) and get rid of carbon dioxide (CO2). The diagnosis is based on blood gas measurement of pressures of O2 and CO2. Patients with COPD is often seen to have co-morbidity with cardiac diseases. Chronic systemic inflammation is seen in both COPD and cardiac diseases. The investigators will investigate the sleep quality, CO2-retention, O2-saturation, cardiac arrythmias and markers of inflammation in 120 patients with COPD in different stages of the disease. Our hypotheses are: - that the first signs of respiration failure type 2 is seen during sleep with alteration of sleep patterns and greater and more long-lasting retention of CO2 in the blood compared to those with a normal lung function - that the use of alcohol, zopiclone or supplementary oxygen will make these differences even greater - that cardiac arrythmias correlates with hypoxemia - that cardiac arrythmias and respiration failure correlates with degree of inflammation
Patients in critical care often require supplemental potassium chloride if levels in their blood are below acceptable level. Common practice is to administer a single dose of potassium chloride under controlled conditions via a drip, before checking if a further dose is required. The purpose of this study is to ensure that it is safe to administer potassium chloride continuously with the dose varied according to patient needs.
