Smartphone-based Aftercare for Inpatients With Anorexia Nervosa

Inpatient treatment for patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) is recommended in extreme or severe cases after failure of outpatient treatment and is highly effective. However, a number of patients show symptom increase and relapse after discharge. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of a guided smartphone-based aftercare intervention following inpatient treatment of patients with AN to support symptom stabilization or continued improvement.

Comparing Real-time fMRI Neurofeedback Versus Sham for Altering Limbic and Eating Disturbances in Anorexia Nervosa

The goal of the purposed research is to extend prior work (STUDY00003758: Real-time fMRI Neurofeedback to Alter Limbic Disturbances in Anorexia Nervosa) on real-time fMRI (rt-fMRI) neurofeedback (focused on amygdala down-regulation) as an innovative neurocircuitry-targeted intervention for anorexia nervosa (AN). This project will include randomization to rt-fMRI or a sham controlled group to answer the following important unresolved question: Does a patient-led procedure aimed at altering brain activity impact limbic circuit function and key eating disorder and psychiatric symptoms in AN above the effect of a matched, but non-targeted sham condition?

The scope of the STRONG_2 project is to investigate the effect of supervised exercise as add-on to standard of care (SOC), for patients with eating disorders (EDs). The effect of supervised strength training will be measured on health parameters such as muscle strength. The study includes patients diagnosed with anorexia nervosa and in treatment at the Mental Health Center Ballerup (PCB) in the Capital Region of Denmark.

Preparing for Eating Disorders Treatment Through Compassionate Letter-Writing

Compassion-focused therapy (CFT) seeks to lower shame and help people develop compassion for personal distress and shortcomings. There is increasing evidence to support the benefits of incorporating CFT-based interventions into the treatment of eating disorders (EDs). Building on the investigators' prior research, this study will examine the effects of a two-week CFT-based self-compassion letter-writing intervention on patients with eating disorders. Participants will be recruited from the wait-list of patients scheduled to begin treatment at the outpatient St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton Eating Disorders Program, and will be randomly assigned to the two-week letter-writing intervention or to a control group. Results will inform the integration of new empirically-derived interventions into ED treatments to improve the currently dismal rates of ED recovery.

Dopamine Receptor Contributions to Prediction Error and Reversal Learning in Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is an eating disorder associated with intense fear of weight gain, food refusal, and severe weight loss. AN has the highest mortality rate among the psychiatric disorders; however, little is known about biomarkers, and no medication has been approved for AN. Many individuals only partially recover, and treatment options, especially for the psychological components of the illness, are not very effective, highlighting the need for more effective treatments. Brain reward pathways have a direct impact on the drive to eat, and a variety of neuroimaging studies have suggested altered reward processing in AN. The neurotransmitter dopamine has a central role in the reward circuitry to drive food approach, and the dynamic interplay between dopamine receptor response and food restriction could have implications for the pathophysiology of AN. Dopamine-related brain function has been studied indirectly using functional magnetic resonance brain imaging (fMRI) and tasks that deliver reward stimuli unexpectedly, that elicit the so-called prediction error (PE) response. Research in AN showed repeatedly altered PE processing suggesting altered dopamine circuit function in the disorder. Dopamine and PE response have also been associated with altered reversal learning, which has important treatment implication for AN as reversal learning is impaired in the disorder and modulation of the dopamine system could improve treatment.
