In a pilot study, we will validate a so-called autism care location in an inpatient ward. The care location will be adapted for patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) and concurrent autism (AN+autism). In order to investigate the effect of a tailored care location for patients with AN + autism, the evaluation will include weight development and changes in nutritional intake, eating disorder and anxiety symptoms. The overall aim is to improve treatment for this specific AN subgroup, that otherwise has a worse prognosis regarding AN recovery.

The Dialogue Study: A Virtual-reality Based Treatment for Eating Disorders

The Dialogue Study is a randomized, assessor-blinded parallel-groups superiority clinical trial fulfilling the CONSORT criteria for non-pharmacological treatment. The aim of the trial is to investigate the effect of a new virtual reality based psychotherapy for eating disorders. A total of 96 participants with a diagnosis of anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa will be allocated to either Virtual-reality therapy plus treatment as usual or treatment as usual. All participants will be assessed at baseline and 12- and 24 months post baseline. A stratified block-randomisation with concealed randomisation sequence will be conducted. Independent assessors blinded to the treatment will evaluate outcome. Analysis of outcome will be carried out with the intention to treat principles.

Interoceptive Mechanisms of Body Image Disturbance in Anorexia Nervosa

The proposed study utilizes a randomized experimental therapeutics design to test a mechanistic framework linking interoceptive processing and disturbed body image, with the purpose of informing the development of future therapies for body image dissatisfaction in anorexia nervosa (AN). A sample of 102 participants will be recruited from the Laureate Eating Disorder Program (LEDP). After being randomized, participants will all receive a one-hour session of acceptance- and mindfulness-based training with a therapist (the introduction session). They will then receive either the interoceptively focused treatment (IFT) or exteroceptively focused treatment (EFT) condition based on randomization. In the IFT condition participants will engage in floatation-REST (Reduced Environmental Stimulation Therapy) while practicing acceptance and mindfulness-based principles. The EFT condition is an exteroceptive intervention in which participants will be asked to view pre-recorded videos of acceptance and mindfulness-based skills to aid in the practice of these skills. Each condition will consist of one introduction session and three experimental sessions. All participants will then return for follow-up measures. Assessed outcomes will include acute changes in body image disturbance (BID) and interoception. Further, longitudinal intervention effects on self-reported eating disorder symptoms, body image dissatisfaction, and interoception; behavioral measures of interoception and body image dissatisfaction; and resting state and interoceptive functioning during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) will be explored.

Exercise Intervention for Patients With Cancer Cachexia: Effects of a 12-week Program and One-year Follow-up.

The prevalence of cancer with cachexia is rising sharply. More than 80% of digestive cancer patients are affected by cancer cachexia. Cachexia leads to weight loss, and reduces quality of life (QoL), cancer treatment response and survival. Exercise could counteract the deleterious effects of cachexia. The 2CAPA study aims to assess the effectiveness of a 12-week exercise program on various symptoms associated with cancer cachexia, including Health-Related QoL (HRQoL), fatigue, appetite, body composition, physical fitness, and physical activity levels. Additionally, it seeks to examine compliance with the exercise program, identify barriers to regular exercise and determine how compliance influences physical and psychological effects. Furthermore, this study aims to determine the maintenance of physical activity levels and the effects post-program for one year follow-up on cachexia-related symptoms. Methods: This study will include 31 cancer patients with cachexia. Participants will receive a supervised exercise program lasting 12-weeks with two sessions per week combining endurance and resistance training. Outcomes include HRQoL, fatigue, appetite, anthropometric parameters, physical performances, and physical activity levels at baseline, at the end of the 12-week exercise program, and at 3-, 6- and 12- months post-intervention.

The Malleability of Body Representation in Anorexia Nervosa: the Sixth Finger Illusion

Body representation can be explored using behavioural tasks such as motor imagery tasks as well as body illusions. In both cases, evidence from studies on healthy individuals as well as patients with lesions to the central nervous system show that body representation is not set in stone: how we imagine our bodies is a dynamic and continuously updated process, to reflect changes in our own body as well as the environment. In anorexia nervosa the representation of the body is very different from that of healthy individuals: the representation is more malleable, and easier to manipulate, while at the same time being more detached from physical constraints. These features of body representation in anorexia nervosa might contribute to the persistence of symptoms and to relapses too. Body representation has clear implications for treatment of anorexia nervosa too. The study aims at evaluating the presence of differences in the malleability of the body representation, explored through the illusion of the sixth finger, between a group of people with AN and a group of normal weight people, taking into account the biomechanical constraints that characterize the physical and mentally represented body.

Metreleptin in Anorexia Nervosa

The treatment of anorexia nervosa often proves to be difficult. There are no drugs that work specifically for the treatment of anorexia nervosa. Experimental administration of metreleptin (synthetically produced leptin) to patients with anorexia nervosa has produced positive results. This study tests the effect of metreleptin in comparison with placebo, which could potentially make treatment easier. The aim of the study is to investigate whether treatment with metreleptin can help to reduce the symptoms of anorexia nervosa and improve mood and weight.

Facial Emotion Recognition in Anorexia Nervosa

Altered emotional processing is reported in Anorexia Nervosa. However, this capability is generally measured through explicit measures, like self-report questionnaires and facial emotion recognition tasks. Instead, no previous research has investigated implicit emotional processing in this clinical condition. In the implicit facial emotion recognition task grounded on the implicit "redundant target effect", individuals generally respond faster when two identical targets are presented simultaneously rather than when presented alone; moreover, the competitive presence of a distractor (that is another emotion or a neutral expression) affects the correct recognition of the target. The ability to recognize and detect facial expressions is explored about two main emotions, fear and anger, because of their role in the intra- and interindividual psychological processing.

Auditory Sensory Attenuation in Anorexia Nervosa

The goal of this observational cross-sectional study is to test the sensory attenuation effect with auditory stimuli comparing women affected by anorexia nervosa and healthy-weight women. Specifically, the study aims to test whether the sensory attenuation effect (i.e., the perceived loudness of a self-generated sound is weaker than when another person produces the same sound): i) is observed in anorexia nervosa ii) it can be modulated in interactive action contexts, as was previously observed in healthy participants. Participants will compare the loudness of target sound with a comparison tone, which can be prompt by the participant by pressing a button on their own will (i.e., individual context) or upon the experimenter's signal (i.e., interactive context); externally-generated sounds are produced in the opposite way.

Rubber Hand Illusion in Anorexia Nervosa

The present research project aims to verify a possible difference in the recalibration of the real hand position (i.e. proprioceptive drift) in relation to the dimensions of the plastic hand in the Rubber Hand Illusion, among a group of female participants with anorexia nervosa compared with a normal weight control group.
