Filter by:Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is an eating disorder often characterised by restriction of food intake, being underweight, body image uneasiness, and the possibility of binge eating, purging, fasting behaviours, and excessive exercising. Despite weight and eating habits being one, and perhaps the most recognizable, components of AN, AN is a multidimensional disease. For example, individuals affected by AN might show psychological suffering, such as depression and anxiety. For example, social anxiety disorder/social phobia is the first or second most common comorbid anxiety in AN (i.e. prevalence rates ranging from 16% to 88.2% in AN against 12% in the general population). Moreover, the highest the level of social anxiety the highest the severity of the eating disorder psychopathology. This latter component resonates with findings on the difficulties observed in people affected by AN in creating and maintaining satisfactory relationships with others. These evidences tell us the importance to take into account the social components/skills of people affected by AN. The development of social components/skills of people affected by AN during their recovery can be considered as a protective factor for future relapse. This would be of relevance for the creation of rehabilitative programs.
The ability to mentally recall a motor act without any overt movement is called motor imagery (MI). The movement simulation that occurs on a cognitive level can be seen as a way in which we express the mental representation of the body in action. MI tasks can be used as a proxy for the exploration of the mental representations of the body. Interestingly, MI tasks differ in the degree of action monitoring required to resolve the task. More in detail, we can allocate MI tasks along a continuum that goes from more implicit MI tasks (less action monitoring required for the resolution of the task) to more explicit MI tasks (more action monitoring required for the resolution of the task). Eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) are both characterized by body image distortion and impairments (i.e. overestimation of the perceived body), however, on a different state of the physical body: on one hand we have a highly malnourished body, on the other hand, we might have a healthy-looking body or an overweight body. As above mentioned, MI tasks can be used as a proxy for the exploration of the mental representations of the body and people affected by AN and BN show impairment on their imagined body. This means that people affected by AN and BN might respond differently when assessed for their MI abilities. We hypothesize that people affected by AN might show greater impairment in their motor imagery abilities because of the greater discrepancy between the physical body (malnourished) and the mental body representation in comparison to people affected by BN, who usually have a health weight, even an altered body representation. Nevertheless, we might expect the alteration of body representation not strictly linked to the physical body dimensions, in the case of no difference between AN and BN. This would be of relevance for the creation of rehabilitative programs.
The aim of this study is to investigate the efficacy, efficiency, and patient experience of a new intervention program on adolescents with high-complexity eating disorders (ED). A prospective group of adolescents with ED (N=60) will follow this treatment program including four different phases: 1) Inpatient treatment; 2) Family Treatment Apartment; 3) Home Treatment; 4) Recovery within the community. The investigators will use a retrospective, control group (N=60) that matched the prospective group in age, sex, ED diagnosis, and severe symptomatology. Primary variables regarding Body Mass Index (BMI), ED symptomatology, functionality, recovery (yes/no), type of outpatient services (low/mid/high intensity), number of readmissions, and patient experience will be assessed at discharge, and after 6 and 12 months. Secondary variables include anxiety, depression, readiness to recover, quality of life symptoms, caregiver skills, and functionality of the family
This is a single site trial of psilocybin therapy for the treatment of refractory Anorexia Nervosa in young adults. The psilocybin therapy will include three preparatory sessions, psilocybin dosing session one (20mg), two integration sessions, psilocybin dosing session two (30mg), and four final integration sessions. Eating disorder symptoms will be measured pre and post treatment. Two family members of each young adult participant will be enrolled in the study. One of which will be required to attend a portion of two preparatory sessions and a portion of two integration sessions and receive psychoeducation about supporting the young adult participant through preparation and integration for psilocybin therapy. Investigators hypothesize that psilocybin will increase cognitive flexibility and that this increase will predict long-term changes in cognitive rigidity, habitual eating, and exercise behaviors in patients with Anorexia Nervosa.
Background: Severe anorexia nervosa is a complex psychiatric pathology with limited therapeutic tools to reduce morbidity and mortality. Equine-assisted therapy could provide additional therapeutic benefits. Objectives : The investigators aimed to explore the effects of equine assisted therapy on the experience of adolescents with severe anorexia nervosa. Méthods : Using a qualitative approach based on Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, the investigators conducted semi-structured interviews with nine participants who had taken part in equine-assisted therapy sessions.
Aims of this follow-up study are to investigate effects of anorexia nervosa on brain structure and functions in adolescence.
In a pilot study, we will validate a so-called autism care location in an inpatient ward. The care location will be adapted for patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) and concurrent autism (AN+autism). In order to investigate the effect of a tailored care location for patients with AN + autism, the evaluation will include weight development and changes in nutritional intake, eating disorder and anxiety symptoms. The overall aim is to improve treatment for this specific AN subgroup, that otherwise has a worse prognosis regarding AN recovery.
The Dialogue Study is a randomized, assessor-blinded parallel-groups superiority clinical trial fulfilling the CONSORT criteria for non-pharmacological treatment. The aim of the trial is to investigate the effect of a new virtual reality based psychotherapy for eating disorders. A total of 96 participants with a diagnosis of anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa will be allocated to either Virtual-reality therapy plus treatment as usual or treatment as usual. All participants will be assessed at baseline and 12- and 24 months post baseline. A stratified block-randomisation with concealed randomisation sequence will be conducted. Independent assessors blinded to the treatment will evaluate outcome. Analysis of outcome will be carried out with the intention to treat principles.
The proposed study utilizes a randomized experimental therapeutics design to test a mechanistic framework linking interoceptive processing and disturbed body image, with the purpose of informing the development of future therapies for body image dissatisfaction in anorexia nervosa (AN). A sample of 102 participants will be recruited from the Laureate Eating Disorder Program (LEDP). After being randomized, participants will all receive a one-hour session of acceptance- and mindfulness-based training with a therapist (the introduction session). They will then receive either the interoceptively focused treatment (IFT) or exteroceptively focused treatment (EFT) condition based on randomization. In the IFT condition participants will engage in floatation-REST (Reduced Environmental Stimulation Therapy) while practicing acceptance and mindfulness-based principles. The EFT condition is an exteroceptive intervention in which participants will be asked to view pre-recorded videos of acceptance and mindfulness-based skills to aid in the practice of these skills. Each condition will consist of one introduction session and three experimental sessions. All participants will then return for follow-up measures. Assessed outcomes will include acute changes in body image disturbance (BID) and interoception. Further, longitudinal intervention effects on self-reported eating disorder symptoms, body image dissatisfaction, and interoception; behavioral measures of interoception and body image dissatisfaction; and resting state and interoceptive functioning during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) will be explored.
The prevalence of cancer with cachexia is rising sharply. More than 80% of digestive cancer patients are affected by cancer cachexia. Cachexia leads to weight loss, and reduces quality of life (QoL), cancer treatment response and survival. Exercise could counteract the deleterious effects of cachexia. The 2CAPA study aims to assess the effectiveness of a 12-week exercise program on various symptoms associated with cancer cachexia, including Health-Related QoL (HRQoL), fatigue, appetite, body composition, physical fitness, and physical activity levels. Additionally, it seeks to examine compliance with the exercise program, identify barriers to regular exercise and determine how compliance influences physical and psychological effects. Furthermore, this study aims to determine the maintenance of physical activity levels and the effects post-program for one year follow-up on cachexia-related symptoms. Methods: This study will include 31 cancer patients with cachexia. Participants will receive a supervised exercise program lasting 12-weeks with two sessions per week combining endurance and resistance training. Outcomes include HRQoL, fatigue, appetite, anthropometric parameters, physical performances, and physical activity levels at baseline, at the end of the 12-week exercise program, and at 3-, 6- and 12- months post-intervention.
