Chronic Pain, Couples, & Physical Activity

Chronic pain affects more than 50 million adults in the United States and is estimated to cost the nation more than $560 billion dollars each year. Regular physical activity is widely recognized as essential for maintaining health for all individuals, but is particularly important for individuals with chronic pain (ICPs) as physical activity can prevent further deconditioning and may even improve pain outcomes. Previous literature has shown that certain categories of partner behaviors (e.g., solicitous, punishing, distracting) are associated with different health outcomes for ICPs, and recently researchers have begun examining partner behaviors through the lens of Self-Determination Theory, specifically looking at the effects of autonomy support from a spouse on physical activity among ICPs. Partner autonomy support has been positively associated with physical activity levels and better health outcomes, but no studies to date have explored what factors predict whether or not a partner will use an autonomy supportive interpersonal style (as opposed to a controlling interpersonal style) with the ICP. Similarly, more research is needed on the mechanisms by which autonomy support promotes positive outcomes for ICPs. Though receiving autonomy support has been linked to increased physical activity and improved mental health, no studies have yet tested the full Self-Determination Theory model as one possible explanation of the link between this form of partner support and desirable health outcomes. In particular, it is important to understand the ICP's perspective on how partner autonomy support influences need satisfaction and autonomous motivation as possible mediators between autonomy support and ICP physical activity. Furthermore, little research has explored other need supportive behaviors or their need frustrating counterparts. The current study will not only provide greater understanding of autonomy support, but will also expand the literature regarding these other need supportive and need thwarting behaviors. Lastly, given the value of need supportive behaviors from one's partner, it is essential to evaluate how partner perceptions of those need supportive behaviors align with ICP's perceptions of those behaviors. Any need support a partner provides is likely moderated by the ICP's perception of that support.

A Multicentre Study to Evaluate the Efficacy and Safety of ENIA11 in Patients With Ankylosing Spondylitis

This is a multi-center, double-blind, randomized, parallel-group, placebo-controlled study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of ENIA11 in patients with ankylosing spondylitis. The study period for each patient will be 27 weeks, during which the patient will undergo screening for up to 21 days, and followed by treatment of 24 weeks and follow up period of 2 weeks. Each patient will be required to make a total of 9 visits. After re-confirming the eligibility of patients at Visit 2, eligible patients will be randomly assigned to either treatment group or control group in a 2:1 ratio. In addition, patients in the treatment group will receive ENIA11 25 mg twice weekly by subcutaneous injection while patients in the control group will receive placebo solution twice weekly by subcutaneous injection from Day 0 to week 12 and then switch to active drug from week 12 to week 24 and follow up period of 2 weeks. The efficacy analysis, including ASAS response measures, ASAS5/6, ASDAS, BASDAS, BASFI, BASMI and individual measures of disease activity, such as numbers of swollen and tender joints, ESR and CRP, will be evaluated at each visit from Visit 2 (baseline) to Visit 9. Safety will be evaluated according to the frequency of adverse events, vital signs, physical examination, laboratory abnormalities, and ENIA11 antibody formation.

99mTc-rhAnnexin V-128 a Phase I/IIa Study in Patients With Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) or Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS)

This was a monocentric, open label, Phase I-IIa study. Eligible patients who signed the ICF received two single intravenous (IV) bolus of the imaging agent 99mTc-rhAnnexin V-128. The first dose was administered on Day 1, and the second dose on Day 42 (±2 weeks). All patients were to start a new disease modifying treatment for RA or AS on Day 2. This disease modifying treatment was at the discretion of the investigator and was not chosen by the sponsor. Safety was monitored at every visit. Whole body scintigraphic imaging was performed at Day 1 and Day 42 after 99mTc-rhAnnexin V-128 dosing. Clinical disease assessments were performed at screening, Day 42 and Day 90 to assess response to RA or AS treatment. Blood was drawn to test for 99mTc-rhAnnexin V-128 immunogenicity at screening and on Days 30, 56 and 90. Patients participating in the pharmacokinetic (PK)/dosimetric sub-study had additional assessments in the 24 hours following the Day 1 dose of 99mTc-rhAnnexin V-128.
