Filter by:The investigators have developed a novel layered low-profile prosthetic foot that is able to provide enhanced compliance without sacrificing strength for individuals with transtibial amputation who have long residual limbs. It is hypothesized that the proposed prosthesis will offer similar benefits to these individuals as comparable higher profile prostheses offer users with shorter residual limbs. The primary goal of this Phase I proposal is to assess the degree to which the proposed prosthesis can provide benefits to prosthesis users in this population, along with characterizing the degree to which the novel prosthesis emulates its taller counterparts.
The goal of this project is to understand the factors that affect skin temperature (e.g., tissue above amputation site, and opposite foot) in people with amputation and diabetes. This project will also test the effects of 'shock-absorbing' prosthesis on skin temperature responses.
The goal of this study is to understand how providing power at the knee or ankle individually, or providing power at both the knee and ankle, impacts ambulation for K2 level transfemoral amputees. Aim 1: measure functional performance of K2 level ambulators when using a commercially available passive microprocessor knee prosthesis (Ottobock Cleg/Ottobock foot) or a powered knee and ankle prosthesis (SRALab Hybrid Knee and SRAlab Polycentric Powered Ankle. Aim 2: Participants will be evaluated on the contribution of adding power at the knee only or the ankle only. Aim 3: The investigators will evaluate the functional performance after intensive clinical gait training on the powered knee and ankle prosthesis (SRALab Hybrid Knee and SRALab Polycentric Powered Ankle). Our hypothesis is that providing powered componentry will improve function and that intensive training will magnify those improvements.
The goal of this study is to utilize the Gaze and Movement Assessment (GaMA) metric to assess the effect of different prosthetic components on compensatory movements used to complete activities of daily living.
The purpose of this research is to determine the feasibility of an uneven terrain walking program for lower limb prosthesis users. The training is designed to induce step-to-step variability during walking within a safe environment, with the aim of improving walking skill and confidence.
This study investigates prosthetic users´ report of passive microprocessor-controlled knees (pMPK) vs. active microprocessor-controlled knees (aMPK). Outcome measurements are assessed at baseline with the pMPK and after 4 weeks of continuous use of aMPK. Measurements consists of functional outcomes, as well as patient-reported outcomes.
The e-OPRA Implant System, is a further development of the OPRA (Osseointegrated Prostheses for the Rehabilitation of Amputees) Implant System. The e-OPRA Implant system is an implant system for direct skeletal anchorage of amputation prostheses. The added feature in the e-OPRA Implant system, is a bidirectional interface into the human body that allows permanent and reliable communication using implanted electrodes. These electrodes will provide long-term stable bioelectric signals for an improved control of the prosthetic limb. The Magnetic Bead Tracking System, which will be implanted and used in combination with the e-OPRA Implant system, is an investigational device that consists of pairs of magnetic beads, and a set of magnetic field sensors that measure and track the length of muscles and the speed at which they move in real-time. When the beads are implanted in muscle in the residual limb of an amputee, the muscle length signal is communicated to an investigational, robotic ankle-foot prosthesis. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the feasibility of a transtibial amputee with the e-OPRA Implant System and Magnetic Bead Tracking System exhibiting full neural control over a neuro-mechanical prosthetic system. A maximum of seven subjects will be enrolled. Each subject will undergo one or more surgeries where the e-OPRA Implant System and Magnetic Bead Tracking System will be implanted. The subjects will participate in follow-up sessions the last of which occurs approximately 24 months after the surgery. This is a prospective, non-randomized, uncontrolled study.
The goal of this observational study is to evaluate and compare the performance of two prosthetic feet for unilateral transtibial amputees during both indoor and outdoor activities. The main research questions aim to answer are: 1. Can a low-cost prosthetic foot enhance gait mechanics and physical performance in individuals who have undergone traumatic unilateral transtibial amputation, as compared to the traditional K2 - K3 prosthetic feet currently available on the market, during both indoor and outdoor activities? 2. Can the low-cost prosthetic foot meet user satisfaction levels after traumatic unilateral transtibial amputation, when compared to the traditional K2 - K3 prosthetic foot on the market? Participants will be asked to do 1. Prior to the commencement of the experiment, a professional prosthetist and orthotist will conduct all fitting and alignment procedures for the transtibial amputees. Participants will then be given a two to three-week period to train and acclimate to the individual socket alignment and prosthetic foot. 2. Participants are asked to refrain from consuming caffeine or any stimulants for 24 hours before the tests. 3. Participants will be required to perform the Berg Balance Test. 4. Participants will undergo a series of clinical tests, including: 1) Time to Go Up (measured in seconds), 2) Four Square Step Test (measured in seconds), 3) 10-Meter Walk Test (measured in seconds), 4) Eye Close Standing, 5) Tandem Test, and 6) Functional Reach Test. Each test will be conducted three times. The test items of 4) and 5) will be performed on a force plate (Bertect, Ohio, USA) with dimensions of 400 x 600 mm and a capturing frequency of 1,000 Hz. 5. Participants will be asked to walk on a force plate (AMTI, Advanced Mechanical Technology, Inc., Watertown, USA) at a fixed walking speed of 1.11 ± 0.11m/s, allowing the foot to land naturally on the force plate. Five trials of the gait cycle with a clean foot will be used for analysis. 6. Participants will perform the Counter Movement Jump Test three times with maximum effort on the force plate (Bertect, Ohio, USA), which will be performed without a hand swing. 7. Participants will be asked to perform a 2-minute walking test on flat concrete ground, stairs, and a ramp, respectively. 8. Finally, participants will be asked to complete the Locomotion Capabilities Index questionnaire.
The goal of this clinical trial is to investigate the repeatability of application of a fully remote method of manufacturing 3D printing of prosthetic sockets for transtibial amputees, and determine user satisfaction of sockets produced through these methods. The study also aims to evaluate the time and cost effectiveness of this production model. The main question[s] it aims to answer are: 1. To determine the repeatability and user satisfaction with transtibial sockets produced using a remote-digital method as compared to conventional manufacturing methods. 2. To determine if transtibial prosthetic users have greater prosthetic satisfaction scores across the 4 Prosthesis Evaluation Questionnaire (PEQ) subscales of Utility (UT), Appearance (AP), Sounds (SO) and Residual Limb Health (RL) with the 3D printed socket fabricated through the remote-digital method compared to the laminate socket made using the conventional method. 3. To determine if transtibial prosthetic users experience greater socket comfort with the 3D printed socket compared to the laminate socket. Participants will receive a 3D printed socket (trial intervention) and a laminate socket (control intervention) and will use each socket for a period of 4 weeks.The order of socket use will be randomised. At the end of each 4 week period, participants will rate their comfort and satisfaction with the socket. At the end of the trial, participants will indicate their preferred socket, which will be fitted to their prosthesis. Participants will attend 6 visits across a total duration of 11 weeks during the course of the study.
The aim of our study is; To evaluate the functionality of lower extremity unilateral amputees, to ensure that the results of the Medicare Functional K Classification System, which provides subjective data for the evaluator, become an objective evaluation method and to determine the functional levels of unilateral amputees; To create an objective data set by applying one-leg standing test, ten meter walking test, L test, figure-8 walking test, joint range of motion, amputee mobility estimator scale, houghton scale and joint position sense evaluation tests.
