Topical Cetirizine 1% vs Minoxidil 5% Gel in Treatment of Androgenetic Alopecia

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA), also known as androgenic alopecia or male pattern baldness, is the most common type of progressive hair loss. It is a polygenetic condition with variable degree of severity, age of onset, and location of hair loss. Male AGA (MAGA) is clearly an androgen-dependent condition and, although the mode of inheritance is uncertain, a genetic predisposition is observed. Regarding treatment of AGA; in most cases it's challenging and unsatisfactory. Finasteride and Minoxidil 2-5 % solution are the only US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved treatment options for MAGA. On the basis of hypertrichosis observed in patients treated with analogues of prostaglandin PGF2a (i.e. latanoprost used for glaucoma), it was supposed that prostaglandins would have an important role in the hair growth (Nieves et al., 2014). Multiple studies had claimed that prostaglandins are deregulated in both alopecia areata (AA) and AGA. Cetirizine, is a safe and selective second-generation histamine H1 receptor antagonist widely used. It has anti-inflammatory properties. Studies have shown cetirizine causes a significant reduction in both the inflammatory cell infiltrate and PGD2 production. The oral administration of cetirizine is commonly leads to different systemic side effects. Thus the topical formulation is expected to be an effective tool for avoiding the oral side effects as well as better targeting, but unfortunately, no topical formulation of cetirizine is available in the market till date.

Quality of Life Comparison in Patients With Different Types of Alopecia

Hair loss is a frequent cause of patient consultation in dermatology. It is known to have a strong impact on patients' quality of life for many reasons; such as esthetic aspect, financial implications, social consequences. Numerous studies have assessed the impact of some types of alopecia on patients' quality of life. One study compared the quality of life in patients with scarring alopecia with patients of non-scarring alopecia. No studies have compared quality of life between the different types of scarring alopecia nor different types of non-scarring alopecia. However, none have assessed the impact on the patient partner quality of life. In addition, few treatments for alopecia are covered by national health insurance in France. The main objective is to compare the impact on the quality of life in different types of alopecia. By using the average scores of the questionnaire Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) for each type of alopecia.

Tofacitinib for Immune Skin Conditions in Down Syndrome

People with Down syndrome (DS) display widespread immune dysregulation, including several immune skin conditions. This study hypothesizes that pharmacological inhibition of the increased interferon (IFN) signaling seen in DS is safe and could improve associated skin conditions. The study evaluates the safety and efficacy treatment with Tofacitinib, an FDA-approved drug known to block IFN signaling, in adolescents and adults with DS and an autoimmune and/or autoinflammatory skin condition. Investigators will also measure the impact of interferon inhibition on a variety of molecular markers, as well as the cognitive abilities and quality of life of participants.

The Epidemiology, Management, and the Associated Burden of Related Conditions in Alopecia Areata

This study series consists of four related studies and aims to explore and describe many important elements of alopecia areata over three key areas: (1) the current epidemiology of alopecia areata, (2) the prevalence and incidence of psychiatric co-morbidities in people with alopecia areata, (3) the prevalence and incidence of autoimmune and atopic conditions in people with alopecia areata, and (4) the incidence of common infections in people with alopecia areata.
