Filter by:The purpose of this study is to test the impact of a 6-week theatre intervention rooted in African culture (Sankofa) on the wellness of girls (predominately African American) ages 8-18 receiving services at five Boys & Girls Club Indianapolis sites. Theatre interventions are led by Asante theatre personnel and evaluated by the PI and occupational therapy graduate students. The theatre intervention being evaluated has been conducted for decades by an established theatre company with widespread community participation and anecdotal positive responses, but has not been scientifically evaluated to understand how it impacts wellbeing. This will be the first large-scale study of the mechanisms of change and of the impact of the theatre intervention in the community and will help to guide future therapeutic interventions using theatre with underserved populations. Research questions include: Is Sankofa a feasible and acceptable intervention for the target population? Does participation in Sankofa result in improved scores on wellness outcome measures, including the National Youth Outcomes Initiative (NYOI) survey? The study is funded by Asante Children's Theatre via the Central Indiana Community Foundation Women's Fund.
A group of 50 age-schooled adolescents was randomized into one intervention and another control group of 25 subjects each. After estimating one maximum repetition for all the participants in a previous session, the intervention group performed a resistance training based on a resistance exercise of 3 sets of 3 to 5 repetitions (90% of an estimated 1 RM) whereas the control group performed both stretching and balance exercises. Measures of executive functions ( i.e. a cognitive function associated with academic performance) were taken for all the participants before and after the training. Both independent and paired t-test will serve to check differences between and within groups respectively.
There is a distinct lack of experimental evidence on whether breakfast consumption and omission affect energy balance-related variables. This research is of particular relevance to adolescent girls due to concerns of low rates of breakfast consumption and physical activity in this population. This study aims to compare the effect of seven consecutive days of breakfast omission with standardised breakfast consumption on free-living physical activity energy expenditure, energy intake and perceived appetite and energy levels in adolescent girls.
This cluster-randomized community-partnered study will examine the effectiveness of a trauma-sensitive, gender transformative youth violence prevention program called Creating Peace that integrates racism and discrimination prevention with youth ages 14-19.
The study design has two phases. The first phase is the refinement of intervention manual for an adolescent living with HIV (ALHIV)and their caregiver intervention, followed by a second phase feasibility pilot study. The study goals are to refine and pilot a feasible intervention that fosters resiliency and draws upon the strengths of adolescents and their families. Specific aims include to: (1) Refine activities and an intervention manual for a family-focused group intervention for adolescents and their caregivers to improve HIV self-management among adolescents living with HIV; (2) conduct a pilot study to assess the acceptability and feasibility of the group intervention among 50 adolescent/caregiver pairs that are randomly assigned to the intervention or the comparison arms, and (sub aim 2a) examine preliminary trends in outcome measures, including Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) adherence, safer sex behaviors and stigma, comparing the intervention and comparison study arms.
Parents have the primary responsibility for child socialization and development, but not all parents have the same possibilities to promote their children's positive development. Immigrant parents living in deprived areas often worry about their children's safety and future, at the same time as they have difficulties facilitating the best development potential for their children. Social services can help parents and their children to attain more promising developmental outcomes through focus on early preventive parenting support efforts, but these efforts need to be culturally tailored for the best possible results. For this reason, social services in the municipality of Örebro developed a culturally sensitive parenting support program aimed at immigrant parents living in deprived areas, who are worried that their children (age 12-18) engage in or will be exposed to harmful environments. The Self-Assured Parenting Program (SAP) offers support to these parents by building on protective factors and strengthening parents in their parenting through focus on parenting competence and parent-child communication. The purpose of SAP is to increase parents' self-confidence and communication between parents and their teenagers as well as to reduce parents' worries through activities that have a clear focus on empowerment and knowledge of child development. This multi-design project aims to test the implementation and effect of TF in Örebro and other Swedish municipalities with similar problems through observation, interviews with parents and groupleaders/managers as well as longitudinal effect measurements of parenting competence, parent-child communication and worries about their children's psychosocial development. This project will allow a partnership between social workers and researchers to be formed in order to generate practice-based evidence about implementation of support to deprived parents, which can be used in the context of everyday social service practice.
This pilot quasi-experimental community based trial examines the feasibility of a sexual violence and adolescent relationship abuse prevention program for girls aged 14-19. Feasibility is assessed through participant attendance, retention and program satisfaction measures and interviews are conducted at baseline, end of program and 3 month follow up (endline) about participant experiences.
Steering Teens Safe (STS) is an evidence-based and parent-focused intervention developed by the investigators, which aims to improve safe teen driving practices by enhancing parental communication skills. The objective of this translation study is to assess the effect of STS on driving outcomes among teen drivers who have committed a traffic violation, and to assess the adoption and implementation fidelity of STS in a county court setting and among these high-risk teen drivers and their parents. The investigators will test the following specific aims: Aim 1: Determine the effects of the intervention on parent-teen communications and risky driving outcomes (risky driving events, unsafe driving behaviors, and recidivism) among teen drivers with a traffic violation(s). Aim 2: Assess the adoption of the intervention and implementation fidelity We will enroll 90 parent-teen dyads, comprised a teen driver (16 to 17 years) who committed a moving violation and a parent/legal guardian, from the Ohio Franklin County Juvenile Traffic Court following the teens' mandatory court hearing. Enrolled dyads will be randomly assigned to 1 of 2 study groups (n=45/group): 1) Control, device installation only with no feedback to nor communication training for parents, or 2) Intervention, device feedback to teens and parents, and parents will also receive individualized virtual communication training. The expected outcome is to establish the effectiveness of STS augmented with driving feedback technology, and to establish the implementation fidelity of STS in a court setting.
The purpose of this experiment is to determine the mechanisms through which parental buffering of stress physiology during aversive conditioning diminishes with pubertal development and whether this diminution of effectiveness extends to social buffering by peers (best friends) and/or other unfamiliar social partners (e.g., experimenters).
The purpose of this experiment is to determine whether social buffering by friends of stress physiology remains effective later in puberty when friends share the load versus when they provide support but are not undergoing the stressor with the target child. There are four conditions: (1) Friend and Target both undergo the stressor, (2) Friend provides support but does not undergo the stressor, (3) Unfamiliar Peer and Target undergo the stressor, and (4) Alone (no partner).
