Filter by:The aim of this study is to compare the relative effectiveness of three different treatment groups for improvements of postural control and for improvements of balance in these patients using aquatic therapy.
The aim of the study is to evaluate the feasibility of a newly developed intervention to improve family support for patient with acquired brain injury (ABI) in early phase of hospitalization (SAFIR): the main components are the assessment of the family, the emotional support for the families, the information giving to the families, the inclusion of the families in the care process and the care coordination between the inter professional team. The main outcomes of the study are feasibility and acceptability outcomes of the newly developed intervention, and trend in efficacy in the family functioning, coping and perceived support from the nurses.
The purpose of the study is to see if a person can stand better on their weaker leg does this improve their walking ability following treatment specifically aimed at standing on leg. This will be compared to people who receive normal physiotherapy treatment not treatment specifically focusing on their ability to stand on their weaker leg. The study is being carried out as part of the researcher's Masters Degree. Participants will be allocated to either the control group (normal physiotherapy treatment) or the experimental group (normal physiotherapy plus physiotherapy working specifically on standing on the weaker leg). There is currently some evidence to show that working specifically on standing on one leg can improve a person's walking but this evidence is limited. Consequently, further research is warranted to identify any links between this treatment approach and walking ability.
About two-third individuals with acquired brain injury (ABI) experience cognitive impairments. Deficits in executive functions is one of the most prevalent cognitive impairments following ABI which result in decline of recovery and independence. Lack of intervention shows evidence of immediate and long-term effect on executive function which is critical after returning to the community. The overall aim of this study is to examine the efficacy of strategy training intervention on executive functions and participation on community-dwelling people with ABI. Findings of the study will provide unequivocal evidence on the duration of effectiveness of strategy training and support the development and application of the program in rehabilitation practice.
Objective: To determine whether immersive virtual reality (VR) treatment interventions improve executive dysfunction and complex attention deficits in patients with brain injury compared with standard neurorehabilitation, and whether VR performance predicts neurorehabilitation outcomes at discharge. Design: Mixed design study with quasi-experimental Intervention group (N = 12) and retrospective Control group (N = 12). Both groups were compromised of individuals with brain injury admitted to an outpatient day neurorehabilitation program.
This study evaluates the addition of therapy dogs in inpatient physical and occupational therapy. Data will be collected across 10 PT and 10 OT sessions, half of which will incorporate a therapy dog.
Working memory is a limited capacity cognitive system in which information is held temporarily in order to make it available for processing. The amount of information that can be held in mind varies considerably from person to person and changes across the lifespan. Working memory is frequently affected following brain injury. As working memory is important for cognitive skills such as problem solving, planning and active listening, a deficit in working memory can lead to difficulties with many everyday activities that are necessary for work, study and general functioning. Impaired working memory may consequently have a significant impact on a person's quality of life and ability to participate in previous social roles, with potential for effects on mood and emotional wellbeing. Evidence shows that non-invasive transcranial direct current brain stimulation (tDCS) can be used in combination with computerized memory training (CT) over multiple days, to enhance working memory in healthy and clinical populations. In patients with an acquired brain injury (ABI), cognitive training or brain stimulation have been used alone to improve attention or memory-related impairment, but the effect of the concurrent used of the two interventions over multiple days is yet to be investigated. With this research the investigators propose to investigate the effect of the combined use of tDCS and CT to improve memory performance in patients with acquired brain injury. The investigators propose to use a multi-day cognitive training regime to exercise working memory, while stimulating the brain with low intensity direct currents. Success will be measured as improvement in performance in several cognitive domain, before and after training.
Introduction There is a growing tendency from Occupational Therapy towards the use of programs based on occupation, which, through significant occupational participation, have shown to obtain beneficial results maintained over time in its participants. For this, these programs carry out processes of occupational self- analysis in which people reflect on the daily activities they usually perform so that they can generate modifications towards more satisfactory routines. However, and despite their proven benefits, these programs have been conducted mainly on older people and in cultural contexts other than Spanish. The "Occupational Self-Analysis" program, developed in the Spanish context, provides participants with a space where they can learn to analyse the barriers and supports for occupational participation and thus achieve a more significant occupational performance. Objectives The objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of the "Occupational Self-Analysis" program on the subjective perception of health and the number of roles in people with and without disabilities. In the same way, the purpose was to analyse the increase or modification of the performance in the Activities of the Daily Life that the participants did, and to know how the social environment supports the individual participation of the participants in meaningful activities. Method The implementation of the "Occupational Self-Analysis" program was carried out in 3 different populations; people with intellectual disability, people with acquired brain injury (ABI) and University students. The intervention was performed by comparing it with a control group (vocational guidance or usual rehabilitation in the caso of ABI participants). In people with intellectual disability, the experimental group consisted of 12 participants and the control one of 13. In people with ABI, the experimental group involved 5 participants and the control, 7. In university students, the experimental group involved 7 and the control 7. The SF-36 Health Questionnaire was used for the evaluation of subjective health perception and the Roles Checklist (Part 1) to evaluate the number of roles they play in the present and the future. All of them underwent a final focus group and the diary were they wrote their learning and emotions was analyzed to assess the benefits of the program.
In efforts to assist people who have had a concussion (mild traumatic brain injury), the Parkwood Pacing and Planning™ app has been developed and tested and will be released to the public. The app uses a point system where users have a daily point maximum assigned based on symptom severity with daily activities (recorded by the users). Users can then schedule their daily activities based on their allowed points. The goal is to help users with symptom self-management by facilitating activity planning and pacing. Patients and clinicians have provided positive feedback on the initial version of the app. Using this as a foundation, the investigators envision enhancing the app to provide a more personalized user experience and to enable further discovery and innovations in the recovery from concussion. This will be accomplished through data analytics and machine-learning techniques, informed by the results of a large-scale research trial. This strategy will be used to customize the point system to facilitate the user with pacing and planning.
Objectives: To analyse if people with acquired brain injury in sub-acute situation, as well as their relatives, and/or partners, consider relevant the approach to sexuality during their Occupational Therapy intervention. Methodology: This study presents a qualitative design with a phenomenological approach. Twelve participants were interviewed: eight people with acquired brain injury, two relatives and two partners who agreed to participate. The information has been collected through interviews.
