Epidemiology of Gunshot Wounds Injuries Admitted in ICU in France

In civilian practice, the incidence of firearm violence depends on the country. In high income countries, most cases are reported in the USA or South Africa. In these countries, gunshot wounds (GSW) represent 20% of death cases in trauma centers, more than motor vehicle collisions. The mortality in civilian practice occurs during the first 24 hours following GSW, mainly due to hemorrhage and traumatic brain injury, though long term effects on physical and psychological outcomes have also been shown. Some factors of mortality specific to GSW have been established: multiples wounds, homicide vs suicide attempt, impact zone, or firearm caliber. Few specific guidelines have been published concerning civilian GSW management. These cases are mostly treated in standard guidelines, such as hemorrhagic shock or traumatic brain injury guidelines. As in other trauma mechanisms, the "platinum ten minutes and golden hour" concept is applicable. In Europe, the incidence of civilian GSW is much lower and few European studies have been published recently. Penetrating injuries in Europe are less likely to be GSW, and are more often self-inflicted than in the USA. In addition, European studies are heterogeneous, due to the difference in populations, healthcare systems and GSW being grouped with stabbing wounds under the label "penetrating trauma". However, there is a global concern in Europe regarding a potential rise of GSW, with higher severity score than conventional trauma patients and often necessitate ICU admission. Studies analyzing data from different European countries show significantly different ICU admission rates for overall GSW, ranging from 17% up to 30%. Therefore, the investigators conducted a multicenter, retrospective study on four French University Hospitals aiming to describe the epidemiology (mortality and type of organ damage) and identify prognosis factors of civilian GSW admitted in ICU.

the Effect of Different Wound Dressing on Prevention of Pressure ınjury Related to NIMV Mask

This study is aimed to examine the effect of different wound dressings on the prevention of pressure injury in the face area related to noninvasive mechanical ventilation mask. The study was completed out with 102 patients who were followed up in Chest Diseases and Thoracic Surgery Hospital between October 2019 and August 2020 and met the inclusion criteria of the study. In the study, hydrocellular and hydrocolloid wound dressing was applied to the pressure areas under the mask of noninvasive mechanical ventilation in the intervention groups, while the routine treatment process was followed in the control group. Wound dressings were obtained from HARTMANN. Study data were collected with the "Individual Characteristics Form" and "Pressure Injury Rating Scale".

Total Genotype Score, Growth, Maturation and Loading Exposure as Risk Factors for Injury in Elite Male Youth Football

A total genotype risk score was generated based on the findings of previous research for non-contact injury, non-contact muscle injury, tendon injury, ligament injury, fracture injury and apophysitis injury. This score was then compared with the incidence of injury between those with high, medium and low risk scores for each injury. The influence of different rates of growth, stages of physical maturation and loading exposure were then also included in the risk model to see if any interaction effects could be observed between genetic risk score and susceptibility to injury in different categories of growth, maturation and loading exposure.

Depression is a recurrent debilitating psychiatric disorder with a lifetime prevalence of 20%. Even though antidepressants and psychotherapy are often effective, a substantial proportion of patients does not respond to currently used evidence-based treatments. The heterogeneous nature of depressive symptoms is a major obstacle for the development of novel effective treatments, and targeted treatments for depression are currently lacking. The investigators propose a targeted disease-modifying treatment for the clinically distinct form of depression related to childhood trauma (CT, emotional/ physical/sexual abuse or neglect before the age of18). CT-related depression is critically different from non-CT depression: it emerges earlier in life with more severe and recurrent symptoms and less favorable responses to treatment. With an average 25% prevalence in depression, there is a large and unmet need for therapeutic strategies to treat depression in individuals with substantial CT. The GR is the major cortisol receptor in the brain and rodent studies have shown that GR blockade at adult age can reverse the effects of early-life adversity. Therefore, GR blockade is a potential novel treatment for CT-related depression but this has never been investigated. Based on the underlying stress neurobiology, the aim is to investigate whether the biological sequelae of excessive stress due to CT can be targeted by blocking the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) using the generic drug mifepristone.

Combining Low Oxygen Therapy and an Adenosine A2a Receptor Antagonist to Improve Functional Mobility After Spinal Cord Injury

Breathing brief, moderate bouts of low oxygen trigger (low oxygen therapy, LOT) spinal plasticity (the ability of the nervous system to strengthen neural pathways based on new experiences), and improve walking after spinal cord injury (SCI). The greatest improvements in walking ability occur when LOT is administered prior to skill-based walking practice (WALK). However, the enduring benefits of LOT on walking recovery may be undermined by the accumulation of LOT-induced increase in extracellular adenosine. The goal of the study is to understand the extent to which istradefylline (adenosine 2a receptor antagonist) may limit the competing mechanisms of adenosine on LOT-induced walking recovery following SCI.

Patients admitted to the ED with moderate to severe traumatic brain injury defined by GCS less than or equal to 10 and confirmed by head CT scan or MRI were randomized into 2 groups: one receiving animal assisted therapy (AAT) and one not receiving animal assisted therapy. Efficacy of AAT was measured by patient's progression in the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS), Rancho Los Amigos Scale (RLAS), and ability to follow multi-step commands (LoCmds).

MN RETAIN Phase 2 Sub-study is a non-randomized trial to evaluate the impact of RETAIN program expansion and services on workforce retention and reduction of future workplace disability in the state of MN. The program is funded by US Department of Labor (US DOL) and sponsored jointly with the US Social Security Administration. There will be collaboration between partners to implement best practices in early intervention to support injured or ill employees in stay-at-work and return-to-work. MN RETAIN involves a partnership between Mayo Clinic and MN Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED), MN Department of Labor and Industry (DLI), MN Department of Health (MDH), Workforce Development, Inc. (WDI), and the Governor's Workforce Development Board. MN DEED serves as the main recipient and administrator of the funding within the state with Mayo Clinic, DLI, and WDI, as subrecipients of the grant.
