Over the past decade, avian influenza (AI) has become a major health concern. The development of safe and effective vaccines against avian strains that infect people is important. The purpose of this study is to determine the safety of and immune response of an investigational AI vaccine in healthy adults against the H7N3 strain of avian influenza.

This study of neurotropic viral infection and Tuberculous CNS infection is the comprehensive investigation of CSF PCR arrays (Hybrydiaztion technique,Sybergreen and Taqman real time PCR arrays of CSF ) in suspected cases of viral CNS infection, Tuberculous CNS infection in both AIDS and non AIDS patients. Patients with clinical viral encephalitis and all meningoencephalitis including all patients with HIV/AIDS CSF and non AIDS will be banked and test for RNA and DNA viral sequence by Real time PCR arrays and IS6110 gene of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Clinical data and final diagnosis will be used to analyze the result of this PCR arrays technique compared to clinical gold standard criteria.
While immunisation of school-age children against influenza is not recommended in Hong Kong, past experience in Japan and elsewhere suggests that immunisation of children may protect the wider community through its indirect transmission-limiting impact as well as the direct immunologic protection afforded vaccinated children themselves. We aim to assess whether vaccinating children against influenza protects vaccinees as well as their household contacts from infection.
Chronic liver disease are characterized by increased levels of plasma IL-6, but the bioactivity of this cytokine in this disease is not well known. IL-6 receptor complex is regulated by multiple receptors subunits: the soluble form of IL-6 Receptor enhance IL-6 signal by a process called trans-signaling on cells expressing few membrane IL-6 receptors. Soluble gp130 is the natural inhibitor of IL-6 trans-signaling. The aim of this study is to characterize circulating and liver levels of theses compounds of IL-6 receptor complex, to unravel the bioactivity of IL-6 in this disease.
Through a prospective observational cohort study enrolling patients newly diagnosed with Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV): Aim 1: Assess attitudes and beliefs about HIV disease and care over time and relate those attitudes and beliefs to success in following the Steps of HIV Care. Aim 2: Validate a simple visual analogue scale for assessing adherence to highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in patients newly starting HAART in routine care. Aim 3: Implement latent growth curve analysis for modeling changes in attitudes and beliefs over time, and for assessing the impact of the components of the Steps of HIV Care model on health outcomes.
