Effect of Reflexology on Diabetic Foot and Glycemic Control in Elderly Diabetic Individuals

Background: Glycemic control can be difficult in the elderly with diabetes.Diabetic foot problems characterized by vascular and neuropathy are serious complications. The effectiveness of reflexology has been demonstrated to achieve glycemic control and manage diabetic foot problems. Objectives: To determine the effect of foot reflexology on ankle brachial index (ABI), diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) and glycemic control in elderly diabetic individuals. Design: A randomized clinical trial. Settings: An outpatient elderly health center in Turkey. Participants: 48 individuals aged 65 and over enrolled in the elderly health center were included. Methods: The elderly were randomized into two groups (study, n=24; control,n=24). Foot reflexology was performed for 12 week in the study group, whereas the control group continued their routine treatment and follow-up. Both groups underwent a comprehensive foot examination for evaluating ABI and DPN at baseline and after 12 weeks; furthermore, glycemic control (glycated hemoglobin-HbA1c) was evaluated. An independent two-sample t-test was performed for pre- and post-test between-group comparisons; an effect size analysis was performed to determine the effect of intervention.

The purpose of this research study is to find out whether certain plant-based foods may be beneficial for individuals with type 2 diabetes. To meet the goal, study participants will be fed known amounts of foods and nutrients. Before and after participants have eaten the food, they will self-measure height, weight, and waist circumference and study staff will administer questionnaires. Blood samples will be taken at a local lab to measure blood sugar and blood lipids.All study appointments will be conducted online.

Cocoa/Carob Polyphenols and Postprandial Changes in Type 2 Diabetes

The aim of this is study is to evaluate the effects of a single intake of a mixture of cacao and carob (rich in high molecular weight polyphenols) in postprandial metabolism in subjects with type 2 diabetes. Studies on the effects of polyphenols on postprandial (glucidic and lipidic) metabolism have commonly been performed in animal models and have used food extracts, ignoring high molecular weight polyphenols as relevant bioactive compounds. In this study, the potential of this kind of polyphenols for regulating postprandial disturbances in type 2 diabetes subjects, since these alterations increased the cardiovascular risk in these subjects, will be evaluated. The study has been designed in order to differentially evaluate the effect of intact polyphenols and that of microbial-derived phenolic metabolites.

CHOlesterol Lowering and Residual Risk in Type 2 Diabetes

The purpose of this study is to investigate why individuals with type 2 diabetes are at increased risk for heart disease and stroke. This study will investigate risk factors for heart disease and stroke, including platelet (involved in clotting) activity, inflammation, blood vessel wall function, and genetic information (blueprints of your cells), in participants with type 2 diabetes and elevated cholesterol. This study will also include a control group - subjects with elevated cholesterol who do not have diabetes. All participants will be given cholesterol-lowering medicines (PCSK9 inhibitor and statin or ezetimibe) for 1 month with the same risk factors being measured following cholesterol reduction. This study will help understand why individuals with type 2 diabetes are at higher risk for heart disease and stroke before and even after cholesterol reduction.

Mobile Phone Support for Adults and Support Persons to Live Well With Diabetes

This study evaluates a mobile phone-delivered intervention (FAMS 2.0; Family/friend Activation to Motivate Self-care) designed to help adults with type 2 diabetes set and achieve self-care goals and improve the quality of family/friend support for their goals. The investigators hypothesize that FAMS 2.0 will improve glycemic control and reduce diabetes distress among patients and reduce support burden and diabetes distress in enrolled support persons. The investigators hypothesize the mechanisms by which FAMS 2.0 will affect these outcomes for the patient include (a) increased helpful and reduced harmful family/friend involvement, (b) increased self-care (i.e., diet, physical activity, medication adherence), and (c) increased diabetes self-efficacy.
